  1. Thanks! I think the Jaguar needs a shot on here.

So tell us about the Falcon League? Playing Falcon only games?

Well obviously the name is inspired by the champion's league :D. You can read more info here and here.

The difference between the league and an HSC type contest like STOT, is that the players compete one on one and points are awarded by victory or defeat. Of course that's the general idea and it will need fine tuning.

  2. I will agree with goochman on what he said. In my experience you don't need 10 people to start but 4-5 regulars. In the STOT we have 4 players that participated in every contest so far, and a few more that participated in more than the half contests while we had 20 players overall. Falcon's league, our new pet project, has attracted 10 people so far who said they will participate. This is very exciting since the league will be a closed contest where people commit into playing it through.

I see two problems with the jaguar HSC. The lack of a decent emulator and the lack of many good games. The first makes it difficult for people to participate and the second limits the number of choices.

So my 2 eurocents: Listen to the people and make wise poll selections and everything will go as planned. Best of luck with the jaguar HSC.

  3. 1. To change the language of the falcon you need to select the appropriate in the NVRAM settings. An NVRAM utility is needed and can be found easily. TOS is in the ROM of the system. In that respect to do the same thing on the MegaSTE and the TT you will need to burn the IMG files into an EPROM. I have no more information on this. However if all you need to change is the desktop you can use a replacement one such as Teradesk.

    2. All your machines have hard disk capability so in my view the best and most reliable option is to use an Atari utility such as JayMSA.

    3. As the Atari and the PC share the same format, for applications you do not generally need to bother with disk images. For games things are a bit different but thanks to the work done mainly by D-Bug many games have been patched so that they can work from hard disk.

  4. 1. You need to install a hd driver. Try ahdi from the official disks as starters. The fact that you are experiencing floppy problems with the hd connected is an indication of Hard disk failure. It may be that you'll need a new hd. Any IDE 2.5" drive would do. (Which reminds me it's time to update my sig).

    2. Same thing as before. The driver is the same for all 16/32 atari computers. The TT needs scsi drives. The mouse plugs in the TT kbd. What MB connector are you referring to?

    3. You can connect the megafile to the TT but not the falcon. To be visible on the desktop it needs to have a hd driver installed.

    4. Floppy disk format is the same between IBM PC and Atari ST. Thus you can use that to transfer files.

    Welcome to the 16/32

  5. I owned a 520STFM and my first game was International Karate. A friend of mine had an Amiga 500 and liked to talk about its superiority. The strange thing was that I used to like the Amiga aswell but his constant bragging and arrogance kind of put me off it.

Something that surprises me is why Atari never gave the first generation ST's better graphics or sound. They knew what the Amiga was going to be because Atari paid for it's development, but instead of creating something better, say 64 on-screen colours and 8 channel sound, they chose to make something slightly inferior.

It's rare for a manufacturer such as Atari to have this kind of inside information about a competitors product. Failing to make something better was a hugh mistake.

That is a very interesting idea which should be better answered by the Atari historians. My view on the subject is quite different. The ST was not a competitor to the Amiga in the sense that Atari was aiming at the business aspect of the computer. The entire ST architecture screams for that. For example the midi ports. In addition to being an emerging standard for the music industry they could be used for creating a network of ST's. The ST high resolution that is very good to the eye when you need to work in CAD or business applications, the ACSI port and peripherals, high speed DMA devices etc. The whole marketing campaign. It's my view that Atari went after Apple and IBM, not Commodore.

  6. Hi,

FTL made great games for the ST (indeed you should probably have posted this at the Atari ST section of the forum but I am sure the mods will take care of that :)). Interestingly enough Oids is the game selected for the current competition of the ST offline tournament. I saw the video of your game and it looks a pretty cool conversion of Oids for the pc. Good luck with that :).
