    I acquired a 7800 with Karateka and PPII in a lot of 5200 stuff. It is very clean and like new with the box, but I really don't want/need it, as I have around 150 2600 games and several nice Stella consoles, as well as a 5200 with a 70% full USB multi-cart.

     

    Someone please give me a good reason to keep it, or I am going to trade it/sell it for more 2600 stuff.

    Anyway, I haven`t read the expected amount of groans about Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes. How disappointing! (I`m used to getting the same responses to liking that game that I do for E.T. Something along the lines of: `Whaaa?`)

     

    Tomatoes is one of my most favorites. I played for hours, thinking I was the master before I realized the difficulty switch issue. What a disappointment that was! Fantastic Voyage is a close second for me and my old lady. Both of these games combine so many interesting elements without being unduly difficult to advance.

    I found this piece broken, but was able to solder it. I have not seen this doohickey in my other consoles with similer guts. There is no channel select switch in this lady either, so what is it?

    Do you mean the metal thing with the fins sticking off it? That's called a heat sink. Most 2600s use a pad of copper on the board as a heat sink, to save about 5 cents per unit manufacturing cost. A real heat sink like this one works much better. If you soldered the heat sink, it wasn't necessary (but it won't hurt anything either, if you soldered it where it was meant to go).

     

    The thing the heat sink is clipped onto is the voltage regulator (you should be able to see its type number, 7805, printed on it), which is present in every 2600 console.

     

    If you didn't mean either of those items, please be more specific: there are at least a dozen "doohickeys" in your photo! Exactly which one do you mean?

     

    I do mean the finned doohickey and the stuff it is connected too, just below dead center of the photo. It, as well as the (voltage regulator?) was dangling loose. I had no picture on the TV until I pushed down on the whole assembly with a pencil and made a connection. There were four contact points underneath that had broken solder. This is what I replaced. Now my new unit works like a champ. (Forgive my uninformed slang. I am new at this electronical stuff. I am eager to learn.) Thanks for hipping me to the terminology. I don't want to take up any more of this dedicated thread with my trivialities. If you want to talk any more about it, lets start a different one. :)

    Did you check at Atari2600.com they used to have one by itself for sale but i havnt check the site lately.

     

    Yup, I just checked there. aprox. 12 bucks plus shipping. I might do it. I still would like to wait for a trade though. I have a couple extra orange and black Wico pistol grips to spare so a trade would definitely be better for my budget.

    Jason at Tradengames has or had the grip and game for $15 on his site. I just got an order from him today. Fast shipping..no problems with this guy ever.

     

    Thanks for the note. :thumbsup: I have the cart already, though, and he seems to only sell it as part of the whole package.

    mine are black with a yellow band black writing ...says gem grip

     

    I am having some confusion, since I don't have it in my hands yet. Is the ball an add-on to a standard Atari joystick, or is it the whole unit, that looks like a standard with a big ball on the tip?

    But you can adapt a 2600 keyboard controller to work as your 5200 keypad if you want to tally do away with the stock 5200 controller.

    This is exactly what I want to do. How, pray tell. I have a half dozen laying around that I never use anyway, so I have leeway to experiment.

    You need a 5200 controller plugged in for its keypad and top function buttons.

     

    The redemption adapters are the best way to go with the 5200. You'll spend a lot of time having fun with the system instead of getting pissed at, or trying to fix/calibrate 5200 controllers.

     

    Bummer. It seems I still need a fully functional 5200 numeric keypad, which I don't, because the 3,6, and 9 do not work, so I guess I am back to finding rebuild parts before I can use the Redemption at all. Thanks.

    Personally opinion, just bite the bullet and find the $50 for a Redemption. With the Atari 128-in-1 USB, you're going to want a digital stick for the lions share of games, anyhow.

     

     

    Hey man, you steered me right on the USB cart, so I imagine your correct on this one as well. I am mulling it over. From what I understand, I can use any 2600 compatible joystick, and I still need to use my 2600 keypad too. Am I correct?

    I tried this in the "wanted" section, but it seems like this might be a more appropriate question for 5200 the specific forum.

     

    I recieved my usb multi-cart, and it is a thing of beauty! unfotunately I have the ever popular flaky controllers. I tried the foil trick and it works for one, partially. The other has cracked curcuits by the left fire button. I talked to Best Electronics yesterday, and sadly, they have sold their complete suply of flex curcuits to some other company and won't be able to have any manufactured for at least three weeks.

     

    I don't think I can afford the Redemption right now, or I would get that. I just want to know if there is another place I can get a new flex curcuit (and set of buttons) to tide me over until the supply is replenished?

     

    P.S. Steve's USB multi-cart is an awesome product and it was amazingly easy to use!

    Best Electronics got their entire stock of flex circuits bought, and will be out for at least 3 weeks. Does anybody have another source in the mean-time. I am getting a multi-cart any day now and both my controllers are doing dumb crap. No I cannot afford the Redemption right now and I have tried the foil trick, which worked just okay for me. I have cracked circuits on both, so some functions are impossible. Help :???:

    Does anyone own one and have any comments on it?

    Do they really work that well?

     

    I was considering buying one but wanted some feedback B4 doing so.

     

    I've got one you can have if you want to pay postage.

     

    I prefer to use the VCS to play 2600 games, I am not too technical, but I found that their is some diminished quality, and the actual play screen is slightly smaller.

    Abolutely! I have mine and its works awesome. Colecovision too! The only game I cant get to work is Bounty Bob but thats because of some technical thingy Im uneducated about but it plays like the real thing.If you need help once you get it, let me know. Its fairly simple. I may even be able to just send you my ROM file folders to make it real easy for you. Goodlcuk with it! Steves stuff is the bomb! :)

     

    Thanks Phantom! I am not the most skilled technically, so your offer of help is appreciated. I am really excited to get that cart. I just used the tin foil trick and got my controller working pretty good too, while I wait for my rebuilding parts. Steve seems like a real straight shooter.

    The adapter worked beautifily. I did have to carve off all of the plastic around the female end with a utility knife and cut off the metal ground in order to fit it into my console's port. The effect is versatile conveniance. There is probobly a simpler, or more Mcguyveresque way, but for 7 buck, I am not complaining.

    In Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes is it possible to die? I have been having a great time thinking I was the most awesome DDT sprayer ever, and two hours later it dawned on me that I had not reset once. Is my game broken? Could I be that awesome? Do I need to lay off the Crane Lake Merlot? :dunce:

    Looks like this guy, for some inexplicable reason, has ended the auction early. Last night I think he had bids up to $18.00 on Frisky Tom. Today, zip. and "The seller ended this listing early because the item is no longer available for sale."

    Nothing gets pulled automatically - eBay only pulls auctions that get reported to them for some kind of violation. The seller is not using the word reproduction in his listing because it is their intention to mislead the buyer. The 3 day acution format is also an attempt to "fly under the radar" and hope the auction geos to completion before someone blows the whistle.

    I emailed the guy about it and he was dismissive, rude and pretty much a pr** about the matter. He knows it is shady, what he is doing, but I am no rat. Somebody with a bigger beef against rip-off artists might, though.

    When I was a kid the only game I ever was able to spend any time playing was Venture for CV. Imagine my glee when I found out Castle Wolfenstien: Next Mission was actually Venture with Nazis! I knew nothing of the title's history as a more modern game and bought it because I like werewolves and horror junk. I am absorbed by this game now as much as I was by Venture when I was a kid!
