Thanks for that link, ZylonBane. It's interesting to see that they ported it from the PC/PSX/SAT (Saturn?) code base, and in C.

For me, trying to rate Atari's consoles against each other is like trying to rate three different Ferraris against each other. I love them all, and can't just pick one over the other. So here's my list of them all and why I like them:
2600 - My first game console, has stayed with me for the 20* years that I've owned it.
5200 - Played a good number of games, but I absolutely despise the controllers
7800 - Has plenty of good games in it's own right AND plays 2600 games!
8bit computers - My 130XE was my first computer, and is what I learned how to program on. Also had MANY games that I enjoyed playing.
ST - Was my main computer throughout high school, and played many great games on it.
Lynx - Literally had to wait several years before I got one, but was worth every second of that wait!
Jaguar - Atari's last system, and everyone at the time pretty much knew it. I poured my heart and soul into promoting it to my friends, and enjoyed countless hours on it. In fact, I never really ever stopped playing it!
-
And, oh, I'll put California Games on #11. Too bad the original Lynx games were so awful, but that's the way it goes.Which original Lynx games are you referring to? Your list has four different games released I believe within the Lynx's first year on the market.

This reminds me, I still need to get Protector:SE...and Skyhammer...and Hyper Force....and...and...man, I wish I wasn't broke!!

Any monitor that accepts inputs through RCA jacks should work.
-
Not to try disagreeing with you, Jetbook Jack, but you can still find older monitors with screens that are still in good condition. Granted, most new TVs like what you mentioned will look better, but you can find an older monitor for pretty cheap, depending on where you go.

-
Using a monitor tends to result in a much cleaner and more vibrant picture, especially if it connects through S-Video or RGB. You can get a good picture on a TV also, just as long as you're not having to connect through RF.

What sites are you people using?? I think most people consider gamerankings.com to be THE site for figuring out the average reviews for console and PC games. Here's the top 10 list from that site:
1. Zelda: Ocarina of Time - N64
2. Metroid Prime - NGC
3. Soul Calibur - DC
4. Half-Life - PC
5. Zelda: The Wind Waker - NGC
6. Goldeneye - N64
7. Gran Turismo - PSX
8. Halo - XBox
9. Grand Theft Auto III - PS2
10. Tekken 3 - PSX

I wish I could find a TT030 at a thrift around here....
That's a pretty nice find. -
Thunderbird is correct. I honestly don't know why anyone is still trying to argue this point.
-
The 3DO would've ate it with just a few slight enhancements to the Jag's architecture, namely more cache for the GPU, a 68030 instead of the 68000, and perhaps even a tad bit more memory.

I guess it really depends on what your expectations of the Jaguar were. There's probably a few things you should keep in mind about it. Although it was proclaimed to be (and really is) the first "64 bit" system, it came out a good deal of time before most of the other consoles of it's day, namely the Playstation and the N64. As has been the case pretty much throughout video gaming history, consoles that have come out later tend to be more powerful, as was definitely the case with the aforementioned systems.
While the Jaguar isn't as powerful as those two systems, it was certainly far more powerful than the systems that were already well established at that time, namely the Genesis and the SNES. A game like AvP, while certainly not anything near what you saw several years afterwards on the PS and N64, was certainly a far cry from anything seen before on a gaming console. Just try to keep that in mind while waiting for the graphics to impress you.
As far as game suggestions, here's a few of mine:
Hover Strike - More akin to something you'd see on the Saturn or PS (graphically)
Missile Command 3D - same as above
Rayman - Released at the same time (and just as good as) the Saturn and PS versions, yet was actually finished for a while before then
Iron Soldier - Another impressive game for it's time
BattleSphere - no need to say anything about this one
If you're ever tempted to get a Jag CD (which I would actually advise), here's a couple of suggestions:
Hover Strike: Unconquered Lands - Looks and plays better than the cartridge game
Battlemorph - WAAAAYYYYYY better than Cybermorph, it's predecessor.
Iron Soldier 2 - Great looking game. Also on cartridge, but the CD version is better
Highlander - This one is kinda iffy on the gameplay front, but definitely does look good

I'd love at least one of those Lynx games. I don't have any of the ones you listed, and all three are ones I've been trying to get ahold of for quite a while.

-
I've been trying to think of what exactly could be causing it, but there's really no telling. I think someone a little more familiar with the XEGS would probably be able to help you out a little better than I can.

-
Thunderbird has already stated several times recently that he's planning on doing yet another run of BSG. He can explain that whole situation to you a lot better than I can, though.

Ohh yea, I'm sure Intel could make a 8Ghz processor in 2005. But I don't think it would be stable enough or cheap enough for the public. A 5Ghz jump in two years is pretty crazy. It's not as crazy as you may think. Intel has mastered the art of driving clock speeds to insane levels thanks to the ever-increasing pipelining and also to advances in the fab process. Where they will eventually run into problems is when other chip manufacturers like AMD and IBM start releasing their consumer level 64 bit offerings, whereas Intel still has no plans of straying from the Pentium series just yet. They're quite possibly digging themselves into a hole, as both the AMD and IBM chips run legacy (32 bit) code MUCH more efficiently than Intel's Itanium.

Yes, I take my moderating duties VERY seriously.
And my avatar really is a picture of me. although from a little over 8 years ago. -
Super Asteroids & Missile Command would be what you're looking for. Both games are pretty good versions, but the cart can be pretty hard to find for a decent price. I would recommend picking it up if you can find it. -
Are you referring to the XE Game System or is it a 65XE/130XE? Try starting it up without a game in the cartridge slot and see what happens.
-
It sounds like you may need to do some spring cleaning with your Lynx!
You should probably get a can of compressed air and try to blow all of the dust out of the cartridge port. You should also try cleaning the contacts on your game cards. AtariAge has a good guide here that you should go by. If none of that works, then the only other thing I can think of would involve taking your Lynx apart. Try those two things I suggested first and see if that helps. -
It's sort of hyped but the cell-chips are going to be bad ass in processing power, just wait, everyone is going that route very soon.
I won't deny that it'll most likely be a pretty powerful processor, but I just can't see them producing something anywhere near as powerful as they claim it to be, and having it cheap enough to put into a $300 console. Not to mention how much of a pain it will most likely be to code for. It almost sounds like it'll make the Jag a breeze to code in comparison.

Heh, thanks guys! Nothing too spectacular, I just wanted to do my part to bring the Lynx forum back to life.
