  1. Hasn't this issue been discussed before? I remember a few people talking about writing routines that would detect which method was being used for the bypass.
  2. Thanks for the advice, guys. The spindle does spin pretty easily, so I don't think the problem is with it being stuck. I'm not with the unit right now, and won't have a chance to take it apart until this weekend. In case I'm not able to get it to work on my own, do any of you guys specialize in fixing or refurbishing Jag CD units? Like I said before, I don't want to have to buy a new one, as they're just way too expensive from the different retailers. Again, thanks!
  3. Fairly adept, yeah. I'm all for it just as long as there's not too much that can get screwed up inside the drive.
  4. I pretty much bought it as-is. The seller has offered to refund my money provided I send the software back that came with it. However, that's not what I want. I WANT A WORKING JAG CD UNIT! If there is ANYWAY I can get it fixed, I will. The mechanism doesn't spin up at all.
  5. I just recently received a JagCD unit for what I thought was a great price. However, it doesn't work. When I power on the Jag, the CD unit's startup screen shows up but then shows the picture of the CD with a ? on it. Also, whatever CD is in the drive does not spin at all. Cartridges work fine when plugged into the CD unit. My question to you all is this: What would be the best (and cheapest) way for me to get this unit refurbished? I don't want to have to buy a new CD unit, as all of the Atari retailers on the web charge WAAAY too much for them. Do any of the dealers offer decent prices for fixing the CD unit? Or are there any enterprising individuals who would do it?
  6. $140 is a heck of a price for that game, considering that the original BS still goes for $200+ on eBay. I'd be tempted myself, but I'm waiting for another run of BSG.
  7. I think that Cybermorph just got a bad rap all around, and public opinion seems to sway people on the matter. I honestly think Cybermorph wasn't a GREAT game, but it was quite good. Just the sheer size of the game was a testament to how far along the Jag was at the time of it's release.
  8. This has always been a tough question. The majority of game systems that have hit the mainstream could have an excusable argument for the title for many different reasons. Having said that, I'd have to go with the Dreamcast. A sizable collection of software with such a large percentage of the games ranging from good to great is simply unprecedented. The chances were quite high that someone could go pick up a Dreamcast and a random game, and that game would turn out to be good. On the other hand, grabbing a Playstation and a random game, the odds are very likely that the game would be complete and utter crap. I'd have to put the TG-16 (PC Engine) as a close second, although I'm sure my relatively low exposure to many of the Japanese titles that never made their way over here holds back my opinion. Still, though, the TG-16 had a very high percentage of good to great games in comparison to it's entire library.
  9. I'd have to say the 3D0 was a far bigger waste than the N64. There were no shortage of AAA titles for the N64, whereas I can't think of any for the 3D0 except for Return Fire. The Virtual Boy was a pretty big waste of hardware, too.
  10. I take it "Atari" now has the publishing rights for Treasure's games in the US now?
  11. If a solution for saving CD games on some sort of CD Bypass cart comes along, you may want to wait for that. The B&C bypass cart doesn't have any NVRAM for saving games. Perhaps they could be persuaded to make such a beast....
  12. Actually I just ordered one from the Goat Store. Thanks for the info, though! And yes, I definitely do need another Jag. As I'm trying to meddle with Jag development, I'd like to have an extra one for modding.
  13. Unfortunately I don't have any other Jags other than my main one. I do plan on getting another one to mod, but it doesn't do me much good right now....thanks for the info though.
  14. I just got my Jag CD-ROM in today, but it came minus an AC adapter. Does anyone know where to get a good replacement adapter? I heard that a Sega Genesis AC adapter should work, but I need to know for sure.
  15. BTW, does anyone know of a retailer who carries the 5200 joystick repair kits? I just received a 5200 with 18 (!) games, and both of the controllers are dead. Oh yeah, I wouldn't mind picking me up one of the third party controllers either....
  16. If you have a little bit of cash to spend, I'd recommend picking up the Jaguar Pro Controller, if you can find it for anything less than an insane amount of money. Even then, it's money well spent. It's one of the sturdiest and best laid out controllers I've ever used. It's TONS better than the standard Jaguar controller.
  17. I wish I was made of money so I could have 3 or 4 of them lying around.
  18. Let's restate that question: How many of you have any idea how much it costs to develop a decent game for the pig of a machine that is the PS2? How many of you know how much hard work it is to create thousands upon thousands of lines of code, create thousand upon thousands of textures, create hundreds of convincing sound effects, tie them all together, make the game playable, test it, debug it, market it, and sell it? Piracy is bad, mmmmkay?
  19. No particular order here: Shadow of the Beast - Great parallax scrolling Gates of Zendocon - Nice animations, detailed sprites Pit Fighter - Choppy animation, but relatively smooth scaling California Games - Just looks darn nice Turbo Sub - Smooth scaling, high color
  20. Even on that level though, what WILL prevent them from doing it regardless? Honestly, although I don't think there will ever be a way to stop piracy, it can be slowed down. In fact, it can even be stunted pretty darn well. Considering that a good majority of the people are collectors, doing something like a numbered or personalized copy of the game would ensure that more people would be willing to spring for it. BSG and Protector SE both had good ideas by including extras with the games, which helps ensure that more people are willing to dish out the money instead of just having someone dump the ROM for them. I know that to a lot of people, nothing beats having the whole "package".
  21. One way to combat piracy of CD games is to either number or personalize each copy of the game. As the Jaguar user base is pretty small, this wouldn't be too difficult to do. If nothing else, it would be an effective way of seeing exactly who is copying the CD's.
  22. Thanks again Skywalker, I'll let you know when I receive it!
  23. Favorites: N64 (Yes, you head that right!) - A very good controller IMO Jag Pro Controller - Too bad not too many games utilize the extra buttons Genesis - Probably the best Dpad of all time TurboGrafx-16 - Why haven't more console makers put Turbo switches on their controllers as standard? Least Favorites: XBox - Some good concepts, you'd think that MS would take a cue from their SideWinder pads Intellivision - The worst controller of all time, for MANY reasons Atari 5200 - C'mon guys, it's just HIP to hate this controller!
