My Views on Homebrewer authors and their games
viMaster replied to Curt Vendel's topic in Atari Jaguar
I won't quote your whole post, but make one point. There is already a sort of flashcart out there for developers to utilize. It's called the skunkboard and it's been accepted by the community as a means of development and game distribution. Hopefully, developers realize this and begin creating games for it. -
Will the Jaglink not work with Aircars or Battlesphere, or are you just saying you can't maximize the networking with a Jaglink? You can have 2-player networking with a jaglink & aircars/BS. You just can't have any more. He's just saying you don't need an expensive scat/cat box for Doom, but you do for AirCars or Battlesphere if you want more than 2 networked.

hehe, Steroids give you acne & anger management issues :-) ... and that's exactly what it will give you playing above level 20 in Gauntlet
-
Haven't played that, either, but I believe it contributed to the inspiration behind Battlesphere.

Alright, so this thread was supposed to be "light-hearted." I guess I didn't realize it since there weren't many signs of the internet's most valuable emotion resource -- smileys.

Long enough to know its a great game, but its not the Alpha and Omega of the Jaguar world, and it's not beyond comparison to anything else and it shouldn't be held on a platter while everyone worships Scato-Logic, in true "Blizard can do no wrong" style. As for "requiring proof" - funny how whenever certain other people here want to know where other people's opinions come from they demand proof of "fact x", or if something is suggested then they issue a demand of "go and do it in 3 weeks or shut the hell up" - however it's taken for granded BS gets better with more Jags. Until there's concrete proof of that it's highly doubful it even exists. Honestly, it's a great game. But it's not "all that" and it really doesn't look or sound that great compared to many games on much lesser hardware. IN MY OPINION. As kitty said, if your original statements were meant to be exaggerations, then fine, I can live with that. I just wish I would have known that earlier before getting into an argument about it. That leads me to believe you really were just trying to get a rise out of some people, which really isn't a good thing to do in the Jaguar forums. People have been banned in the past for such things. Anyway, I already mentioned BS isn't my favorite Jaguar game and I really haven't seen anyone else in here saying it's the greatest game of all time. We were responding to your claim that it is inferior to the 1993 DOS X-Wing. Let's not confuse countering your claims with an opinion that Battlesphere is the greatest game of all time.l

The video I viewed of X-Wing showed nothing spectacular of the AI. They just flew in front of you to get shot, unless I'm missing something. Really, I can't give a good enough opinion of it not having played it -- the same can be said for you. You obviously haven't played Battlesphere for an extended period of time and therefore do not understand anything about its AI. The video I posted at least showed how intelligent they are to not get in your crosshairs. They are not too difficult in the easier levels (obviously, since it's supposed to be easier,) but they get progressively more difficult the further you get. You'll most likely not see a video of the AI getting more intelligent with more hooked up jags, because there are so few that are able to have that sort of setup... and how could you actually "see" the AI getting smarter? You'd need to play it. I don't understand your comment "point at you, shoot, then run the hell away so the object stays off the screen and/or so far away its tiny so as to keep the frame rate up." What do you mean they run away? They're not running away in my video... they're firing and avoiding ramming into me and then tailing behind me trying to shoot me, but you should fully understand that given that the aft and forward radars that are also present in X-Wing that you're such an expert of. Did you even try to understand what was going on in the video? It's obvious you really have no idea about Battlesphere, so how 'bout you just lay off it until you've played it. The same should probably be said to me about X-Wing, though. Just to be clear, though, I never said it wasn't a good game, either or that it was a feat for its time. I'm just showing that it clearly isn't superior to Battlesphere in those categories you mentioned and... HELLO?! It shouldn't be. It was made years earlier, though as was mentioned, the hardware itself was not any newer. You're wrong regarding this conversation being only about the AI and gameplay, though. You yourself stated in your "review:" Battlesphere: X-Wing. Without the graphics. Or the sound. Or the AI. Or the budget release. You included graphics, sound as well as the AI, so you brought it up. So is that first screenshot you posted not actually indicative of the X-Wing you were comparing with Battlesphere?! Were you using that enhanced version that kool kitty89 mentioned was released in 98? EDIT- Let's get down to it... I have played 0 minutes of X-Wing, which obviously does not make me an expert on that game, but I've played hours of Battlesphere, so I know what it's like. CyranoJ, honestly, how long have you played Battlesphere?
-
You are not seriously saying that even if that screenshot was less blurry it would look better than X-Wing are you? Remember, X-Wing is 320x200, BS is probably larger (NTSC frame size)... X-Wing is 256c, BS is 16 bit... X-Wing kicks its arse. Not bad for something released years earlier Whoah, whoah! Who said it wasn't a bad effort for a game released years earlier. But I've just looked at probably a dozen screenshots of X-Wing and there's no way I can see that it is graphically superior to Battlesphere and I don't think Battlesphere is the best game on the Jaguar. I like the game, but I'm not so biased that I think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's in my top 10 for sure... probably top 5, but AvP & T2K will always be at the top for me. Ok, I posted the video to my Battlesphere review and now I decided to find an X-Wing video on YouTube. I typed in "X-Wing" and this video was at the top. It's obviously a good game for its time (and yeah, I remember people in those days saying how great it was -- I just never played it.) But seriously... graphics, audio & AI being better than Battlesphere? AI: The enemies just fly right in front of you to shoot them. How is that intelligent? I'm not seeing many of those "detailed" textured polygons your screenshot alluded to. All I see is flat-shaded, which is basically the same as Star Fox and the color inferiority you mentioned (256 colors) can easily be seen. Are you just trying to get a rise out of us Jaguar fans or something? The "detail" in the cockpit really isn't that big of a deal, since Gorf already mentioned that you have much more playing field with Battlesphere. You can also clearly see the "256 color" limitation in the cockpit from X-Wing. It seems like the AtariAge section is being overrun by people who just want to get a rise out of Jag fans. That's too bad. EDIT - Oh, and the music?! Are you kidding me?!
-
Video proof of its superiority or it didnt happen. You have 2 weeks Just turn the sound down, because I hate the sound of my voice. I guess I'll have to do a decent gameplay-only video of it.
-
It most certainly does count! While all of the great exclusives and multimedia functions of the PSP make it a system that is very much worth just about anyone's time, the simple fact that it has a fantastic remake of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, a port of the PC Engine CD orginal, and Metroid Castlevania: Symphony of the Night all in one package makes it a must-own for any gamer I would have agreed with you when I first bought it, but I haven't played it in at least a year and a half

I've never played X-Wing, so I went to check out screenshots of it. I hope you're being sarcastic, because that thing is a piece of crap graphically compared to Battlesphere. I can't comment on the sound, though, since I haven't seen it in action yet. The graphics remind me of a crappy version of Star Fox. Is there a different version of X-Wing you're talking about?
-
I never had an SNES, but my friend did and we played Star Fox A LOT. Then I got a Jaguar w/Cybermorph and we both said "screw Star Fox!" As far as the library is concerned, I really don't think it's the ratio of good-to-sucky games. It's more that there simply isn't enough in the first place. With as many good games came out for the SNES & Genesis, there is probably an equal amount of crappy ones. I don''t really hate the jaguar that much.I used too,but that stopped when it wasn't my primary console. I did love and still love the CD add-on. Battlemorph was quite awsome and fixed allot of cybermorph's problems.I still play my Jag Cd to play Baldies allot I think the jaguar is a really interesting machine that could have done allot. It did have more power than the SNES,but very few people actually knew how to squeeze the good stuff out of it.I am also an atari fanboy=) Oddly enough, the Jaguar was actually my first console as my parents weren't keen into getting me addicted to video games early on haha! Also, another interesting tidbit, it was actually my ONLY console until I bought a 360 a couple years ago Eh, I had a PSP before, but that doesn't count. I'm definitely a little biased regarding the hardware itself I do try to stay neutral on the software, though.

At that point weren't people leaning towards the "new" 3D polygon-type games, though? Obviously, the Playstation took advantage of that idea, but did the 3DO have any good 3D polygon titles?
-
Completely different games types though, many who like the fast paced rail shooter genre won't care for Cybermorph. I'm a bit neutral on the latter, though I haven't played it enough to really judge it, by apearances it could have been a lot more polished though, and could have been more esthetically designed. (soem of the color schemes and backgrounds -or lack thereof- are rather garrish compared to Star Fox, Battlemorph resolved this, resolved the annoying Skylar, and the lack of music) Not really a direct comparison to Cybermorph, but I'm also a big fan of combat flight sims (space sims particularly, but historical/realistic ones on occasion as well), particularly the old X-Wing DOS PC game. (CD-ROM version, not Win95 version mid you) Granted, this is really more comperable to Battlesphere. Again, differen't genres, and the Jag could have made a 3D rail shooter that would easily blow Star Fox away, more colors, higher resolution Gouraud shading higher framerate and poly count/draw distance, and all that probably even using the 68k as the CPU, as was common, not really tapping the Jag's true potential. (too bad they didn't have a railshooter like this, probably would have appealed to more people than CM) I like Star Fox, still play it too, just a fun, pick up an dplay game. (the music is great too, really sets the tone of the action, one of the major things Cybermorph lacks) Yeah, I've always said the same -- different games, so they can't really be compared. What I was saying, though, was my friend and I had plenty of fun with Star Fox. we both went through it and beat it and it was a blast. Just once I got the Jag & Cybermorph, we never picked it up again, because we thought it was awesome that you were no longer stuck on rails and could fly around on your own. We also liked the graphics better.

We're just saying there are reasons to have one. It's obviously totally up to you what you decide to do with it. Don't be surprised if you decide to get one down the road and it costs you a lot more, though
-
And then you also have some homebrew that's been released on CD, since it was the cheapest option for production until the skunkboard came along.
-
With the console + CD + Primal Rage boxed it's certainly a good deal when you factor in the rest of the games, no matter how common they are.
-
Yes, it's "my" design for attaching a ST-mouse to the Jaguar, as mentioned before this design is not compatible to the one Atari used. So currently the only software which you can use with this adapter-layout and a ST-mouse is one of the 3 test-programs avaliable on my website (Colmouse, OneAxis and TwoAxis) and probably Starcats Eerivale-demo. The upcoming Impulse offers a configuration-screen where you can tell the game which adapter you have and which mouse (or other Rotary-device), also the Impulse-manual includes an addendum showing the pinouts of 4 common Rotary-adapters. Kind regards Matthias :-o :-o :-o :-o :-o There's no drooling smiley, so those will have to do. I cannot tell you how excited I am to see Impulse in action.
-
Probably. I played those first 2 or 3 on the PC and enjoyed them.

Its 1993, you're in charge of the Jag, what do you do?
viMaster replied to A_Gorilla's topic in Atari Jaguar
Well there's your problem, lol. You can't really compare the picture or audio of two systems when they use different cabling to get to your TV. If the Jag was using the RF, then the graphics probably looked horrible as well as the crappy audio. You need to hook that baby up using at least composite and even better, s-video. -

Imagine if that game was finished! I like that game more than most of the others on the Jaguar and it's not even complete. I do like a lot of my Jag games, though. Phase Zero is such a great show of what the Jaguar could do with the right development team behind it. Kudos to Hyper Image. -
you nut! I'm glad some one got it . But then I cheated... I saw Robert's posts I do like your hint system, though

Most of the games weren't even 3D The 2D ones weren't bad, but they were basically Amiga games with better color. The 3D was just terrible, but that was what was in at the time. Tempest Having said that... have you SEEN the start of the Great Wall level in Tomb Raider ii? Its absolutely appalling - and yet people rave about the Tomb Raider games including that one - was it only the massive hype? Let's be honest... it was a chick with large boobs
