XBOX using the 5200 Marketing Strategy?
davidbrit2 replied to A2600's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I have rather small hands myself, so I instantly fell in love with the redesigned small version of the Genesis 6 button controller. That thing just fits like a glove. The original 3 button controller drives me nuts. The buttons are so unwieldy. -
XBOX using the 5200 Marketing Strategy?
davidbrit2 replied to A2600's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Yes, I'm well aware of the Humvee. But the accepted name for the consumer model seems to be Hummer. Personally, I'm waiting for the Rimmer myself. They aren't. But they haven't struck me as being as weak as the XBox campaign, so that must count for something. I hate marketing departments by default, since the primary goal of television marketing is to lie to the public. Sometimes it's just a matter of degree. And why do people automatically assume someone is a "fanboy" when he claims he doesn't find a game system's library appealing? House of the Dead 3 and DDR Ultramix are the only two titles I can think of that might interest me in the least bit. And this wasn't even the original point to begin with anyway. Oh, and I've never been that impressed with Rare. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are the only two Rare games I've found to be quite good. So anyways, MS is running with the big=better approach a bit too much, making a large portion of the XBox library hype based, and not that great looking to me. The PS2 suffered this same problem for a little while after its release, and it still does to an extent, but not so badly that I didn't get one eventually. -
XBOX using the 5200 Marketing Strategy?

No, spoken like someone who doesn't like what's available for the XBox, and who thinks that their marketing campaign doesn't appeal to anything more than the very casual gamer. -
XBOX using the 5200 Marketing Strategy?
davidbrit2 replied to A2600's topic in Modern Console Discussion
It seems that Microsoft's marketing campaign is targeting ignorant consumers that assume bigger things with a more "hardcore" image are inherently better. Why else do people buy limos, SUVs, and Hummers? (And why did they name an automobile after a blow job?) And this campaign seems to be working, because the software selection is pathetically mediocre. A person gullible enough to be taken in by the XBox' "hardcore" image will buy any garbage that Rare spits out. -
1stPrize < MinimumWage * TimeToSolveWordSearch Therefore, I'm done.

It comes in pretty handy when you've got about 2 or 3 Slipices about to raise hell with the floors, or if you're on the bottom floor with all manner of hellishness converging on your location.

Midway arcade treasures/Intellivision Lives!
davidbrit2 replied to Rocko's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I really like that Intellivision collection. They did an admirable job cramming all the INTV controls onto a Dual Shock, and almost every game has at least some customized controls to make it easier. The on-screen keypad is nice, too, but it's a bit bigger than it really needs to be. I noticed that the sound isn't quite perfect, but the games still play just as well. There was one small problem, though. Occasionally, some games don't register that you have in fact cleared the goal score. High score saving is a great addition, but I can't figure out why some games just don't do it (Night Stalker, for one.) But overall, this was easily worth $20. -
Oh my goodness! It's the predecessor to Polybius! Heh.

What are the most desirable games as player AND collector?

Oh, hey, we forgot about Marauder. That's dang good fun, and it's a 6. -

You stole my answer. Crazy Climber plays quite well, too, though it's not a real gem like HERO. -
"A gun safe? Why do you need guns???" "Oh, that's for my Atari games. I keep the gun under the sink with the bleach."

Super Mario Advance 4 : Super Mario Brothers 3

"Rated E for Everyone" "...already played this back around 1990. And it was better then." I'm glad Konami is still on board. Sure, the Castlevania games are starting to get a bit formulaic, but they haven't become boring quite yet. I give it two more releases. So... Who's going to buy the port of the original Metroid, too? -
Yup, same here. Atari retro programmers unite, back to text only browsers! Oh, come now, surely you've all made JPEG/PNG to ASCII rendering scripts by now. He he.

How could you forget??? It's your freakin' avatar!

"Real Arcade" stick by Pelican?
davidbrit2 replied to MrRetroGamer's topic in Modern Console Discussion
The Gamecube version of it seemed like crap. I fiddled with two of them in two different game shops, and several of the buttons were sort of sticky and sluggish to pop back up. The Pelican universal fighter stick may only be made of plastic, but at least I can trust the buttons. -

WHAT??? That is weak. Will it at least be GBA Player enhanced to support two controllers?
-
I think it's some kind of DSP that generates TIA sound registers on the fly, thus mixing several audio channels together. I'm sure someone else can explain it better. But it's not quite a Pokey.

You know what's even more annoying? People with no sense of humor. If they can't deal with it, forget 'em. But anyway, yeah, this looks very cool. I want. I'm still curious to see how it fits on screen, though. Will non essential scanlines be clipped, or will some sort of compression be used? Time will tell. I'm sure it'll look great, though.
-
High score saving? Well, I'm sold. And you should really consider adding "undocumented" support for a controller adapter, just in case a 3rd party company wants to give us a way to play Kaboom with paddles.

Is someone harvesting email addresses?
davidbrit2 replied to davidbrit2's topic in Site and Forum Feedback
Spammers will quite often give a fake return address. Usually its to a server that's 100% unrelated to the spam. The headers you want to look at are the Received headers. They are listed in reverse chronological order, so the systems of origin are listed last. That's where it came from, and shows the IP address of the sender, and the IP address of the mail server that first accepted the message. -

Well, I guess that would explain why the database server wasn't responding for a while. Apparently it was getting hammered by a custom PHPBB spidering program. Ugh. My response: -
...Or was this an isolated incident? Would this have anything to do with the database server not responding just a little while before receiving the message?
-
Interesting. Maybe I'll have to get a copy of that if I see it cheap.

So do you mean that it's possible to display all 500+ scanlines at 60fps without interlacing? I sure have never seen that done. Or do you mean that the NTSC broadcast just tells the monitor to draw the next field starting on either the odd or even scan liens? Because that's what I was getting at.
