I've never compared 'like for like' with ST and Amiga games, though I always thought that the graphics on the ST looked clearer than they did on the Amiga.
I remember reading how designers were impressed with the STs' clean and tidy circuit board design. Maybe thats why everything looked so clear

-
The thing that really compromised the ST was the 16 colour 320 x 200 resolution. If they'd given it a 256 colour 320 x 200 mode from day one, then it would have walked all over the Amiga aswell as PCs.
At the end of the day, I don't think the ST line would have survived for much longer than it did. It's software and expansion that matters, and that was where PCs' had the advantage.

Looks good. I like the idea of DVD playback.

Just out of interest, does anybody know if the Atari 8 bits outsold the C64 in the U.S ? I know the C64 had more worldwide sales.

Perhaps it was playing on the Candy/Coleen names... and having a sweet 16 bday. Or it was the additional 16K of RAM.
I've just read on Wikipedia that the Sweet 8 and Sweet 16 were designed to be 16k and 64k machines. Wonder why they didn't call it the Sweet 64?

Why was the prototype called Sweet 16 ? It still used the same 8 bit processor as the 800XL, or did it ?
-
Atari needed some fresh new technology and the Amiga chipset was slated for a game system (can you imagine a console with the power of Amiga in 1985 !?!!?) and a new computer (the Atari 1850XL) That would've certainly have made a huge difference.Curt
Sounds like the 8 bit computers had a few more years left in them. I suppose the Atari 1850XL would have been like an Atari 1000/1200 + Amiga graphics chip. Who knows, there might be a prototype hidden in a box somewhere

-
Aha! Could be tricky then.
Someone is selling 2600 power supplies on eBay (where else!)
-
I think you need to use your existing 2600 power supply with the game mate then connect the power 'output' of the game mate to the 2600 'input' using a mini 'mono' jack lead. Kind of like a daisy chain. Did you get a jack cable with it?

but IIRC its an 8 bit
Ah, so IIRC is "If I Remember Correctly".
I'm still getting used to this internet jargon

I reckon the Flashback 2 case will be used again in future Flashback products.
It makes sense that Atari will make more Flashback 2's with different games and maybe new controllers. I'd love to see a joystick/paddle hybrid controller. They've already done the expensive part and designed the casework and 2600 on a chip.

Atari designs were way ahead of their time.
If only they had put them into production.

This doesn't belong to me, but it's still pretty unique. It's some kind of cartridge selector for the 2600. It's being auctioned on the French eBay site.
The seller doesn't accept Paypal so don't raise your hopes if you were thinking of bidding

lots of evidence, its called the ST
That's not quite what I meant
I mean, did Atari plan on improving the capabilities of the XL instead of replacing it with another system (the ST).
Atari tried to buy the Amiga chips from, er, Amiga. Maybe the next generation of XL computers would have used some Amiga hardware?
-
It's a great looking computer. I wish the ST had looked more like this, or at least had the same colour scheme.
XL cream/magnolia Vs ST grey? Mmmm, which would you choose.
-
Hey mimo, the cats back
The Flashback 3 picture looks good too

-
Maybe this is a little off topic, but is there any evidence that Atari were taking the XL line beyond the 1200XL and 1400XL, in the same way that the Apple II evolved into the IIGS ?

The C64 sold roughly 3 million units in Germany, all Amiga models combined about 1.5 million units. My mistake
I always thought that Atari was the big seller in Germany. I think that Atari launched their PC's in Germany?

TT Performance On An ST ?
in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Posted
Here's a silly question just for curiosity sake. Could an ST be upgraded to give it the same power and graphics performance as a TT ? I know that STs' can have faster processors fitted, but could the ST graphics chip be replaced with a TT one ?
