  1. Hey I'm here in Oakdale! I could bring lots of stuff to display but like S1500 I'd have no time to invest in planning & working out any details, but I'd likely attend.

If something does come together, PLEASE dont have it during winter. IMO outdoors is overrated as it is, but I hate going out in the f'ing snow.

Well, you see, if we have a convention in the twin cities, we would have the convention INDOORS, especially if it was the winter.

  2. We need a convention here dangit, so I can show up & have some fun. I see all these other retro-game related conventions all over the world and hmm, those would look like fun. The closest convention to here was a Jaguar convention in Rochester. I would rather to go to a more widely casted net.

Of course, I want no part in the planning, responsibility & monetary investment in it. I'll gladly pass that buck to somebody else. Let's see tons of Ataris & other classic video game systems setup for the public to enjoy. Let's have a few dealer tables here & there, and whatever else I can think of.

Of course, I only know of 2 or 3 other locals on here, but surely more would come out of the woodwork. There's also some art gallery with a classic video game-themed exhibit coming up. I gotta remind myself to go to it once the art's ready.

    So, what do you think?

  3. Has anyone seen this on Youtube? Accidentally stumbled across it and loved it. Watched a huge marathon of episodes last night.

    Linky dinky

These 2 goons are the perfect compliment to Angry Video Game Nerd. They are always happy, they are always loving AWESOME video games. If G4 were around in the late 1980s, this is the programming you would get. It reminds me of the godawful "GamePro" shows starring JD Roth. If you can get used to the EXTREEEME camera angles(that cameraman should be working in action movies) you're in for a treat. With a shoestring budget, they make it look like the late 1980s. What? No Rude Dog shirts or Zubaz?

The characters inept abilities & knowledge of video games lead to amazingly trivial tips, harassment from dad, ROB confrontations, and all-too-soon announced conquests in video games. The intro of the show reminds me of The IT Crowd.

This is video game retro humor done right.

  4. Last night I had some free time, so I updated my way-old copy of MAME32(wow, 5 years already?) and fired up my freshly bittorrented ROM collection, and had some fun. To me, it's fun to explore these ultra-obscure arcade titles that have been largely forgotten by video game history. For every Pac Man, there's about 20 or so coin-op games that nobody remembers whatsoever. There seems to have been quite a few fly-by-night coin-op companies that released a handful of games, and that was it.

Well, I stumbled upon one game that inspired me to try all the other games by them. WOW, were they bad. I present to you Century Electronics

    1. Cosmos - Astro Fighter ripoff. Gameplay is boring.

    2. Dark Warrior - love the color & choice of font for the marquee - boring shoot-em up game with only a little spice.

    3. Dazzler - didn't play it, but looks like it sucks. Your typical "board game" coinup, with a static play screen.

    4. Delete - didn't play it. Not sure if it's on MAME.

    5. Gold Bug - a horrific dig dug clone, where you HAVE to dig through the tunnels. No defense mechanism except for one-time monsters you can easily get killed by when they go on rampage.

    6. Heart Attack - boring!

    7. Hunch Back - almost a Jungle Hunt ripoff, but boring

    8. Outline - a Quix(or that other game I can't think of) ripoff

    9. Radar Zone - oh-so 80s marquee. Forgot what it plays like

    10. Space Fortress - generic sounding game. didn't play it

    11. Space Warp - didn't play it. dull sounding title

    12. Voyager - didn't play it.

    13. Logger- a total Donkey Kong ripoff. The graphics are HORRIBLE(player's animation sucks). The hit detection is horrible. The screen pattern is changed from DK, ie 1-4-3. I never got past the elevator stage since the hit detection is so strict. you fall more than 1 pixel alotted, you are dead. The 2nd elevator(on right) takes a while for the platforms to show.

All of the games seem to use a speech synth for all the sounds. MAME doesn't have the emulation quite right, so the games sound weird.

But the company, as a whole, sucks. Nothing remotely original. I give them credit for homebrewing their games instead of total knockoffs, but the slight variations in the game they introduce ruins it entirely.

Also, try the game "Time Limit". This is an Elevator Action ripoff, with about 200000 ways to die. From the get-go, you get 2 criminals ready to kill you. The elevator cars move SO fast, it's nearly impossible to ride up/down without falling to your death. There are traps above the escalators where you have to time it right to avoid being killed. Even with the cheat mode enabled, you don't get very far. The colors are messed up, so you look like a cop in blackface or something.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg for incredibly bad arcade games.

  5. Ahhh, Roller Garden's. It's been 20+ years since I have been there. The first time I laid eyes on a Centipede machine was Roller Garden's. IIRC back in the early 80's the arcade lineup they had was...

    Ghost's n Goblins

    Centipede

    Pole Position

    Gauntlet

    Crystal Castles

There was more I'm sure but those ones stand out in my mind, my brain starts to hurt when I go that far back for too long :D

Also few Pinball's, I believe one was an Atari Widebody style.

About the Roller Derby, is there any good websites to see when upcoming events are? I'd like to actually go to one instead of just saying I'm going to go:)

I remember some of the games at Saints North:

    The Pit

    Kangaroo

Donkey Kong 3. Okay, I guess that's it. They had a LONG row of arcade cabs everyone loved.

For roller derby info, go to Minnesota Rollergirls website for all schedule stuff.

  6. Which roller rink? I would go take a look at that one. I have been meaning to go check out some of the roller derby leagues they have around here, I guess there is quite a scene unless the City pages and Public Access TV have lied to me :)

Roller Garden. I almost never go there(a bit far away). They closed down my childhood favorite one, the "other" Saints North in Maplewood. Roller Garden's the only one I know that has adult skating. Sadly, it's skwewed to more hiphop & r&B.

As for roller derby leagues, I strictly only go with Minnesota Rollergirls. Never missed a bout. I used to support & go to the Northstar Rollergirls bouts, but not anymore.

  7. I'm not sure if I like this latest version of MESS. I can't get disk access to work at all on the TI-99/4A. I go back to my old version, disks work just fine. Ugh.

  8. Kind of a sad sight to see. T-Mek is actually a good arcade game, and it's just sitting there in a messed-up state.

Unless it's a retro arcade, I would be very surprised if the owners have any intention of fixing it. Ask if they want to be rid of it. If the owners ask for a price like $20, don't try very hard to haggle them down. If the owners later happen later on to find a service manual or something else that may help you, they'll be more likely to tell you about those things if they like you.

Sadly, it would cost me more to get the T-MEK hauled away(and somehow downstairs into my rec room) than it would be $20 to buy it(if offered). That game is freakin' huge. Fun to play though. They also had a Run & Gun(basketball game) that had horrifically messed up colors on one monitor.

  9. So I was bored(whilst looking for a job), and decided to draft pseudocode for Tunnels of Doom in Python. A great way to learn object oriented programming. No?

Well, I mosied over to MESS, and somehow magically got Tunnels of Doom working. You see, it's magical that ANYTHING works in MESS without having some sort of oddball error that's beyond my control. Turn off the speed throttling, and you can quickly zip through the game.

So I noticed in the level 0 general store there are "Stone Arrows". There's no weapon sold at the general store that corresponds with it. WTF weapon uses "stone arrows"? I can only assume there's a bow out there "in the wild" that uses them, but dang, I've yet to see it.

And here's some screenshots since we don't see enough screenshots on these here forums.

What an ugly & beautiful monster.

    Pwned all you guys. moahahah!

This safe was tough to crack. So many tries, it overlapped on the results pane.

As a former software QA person, I had to try this to see what happens.

Level 8 general store prices for armor. And you thought gas prices went through the roof.

  10. A few weeks ago, I went to the roller rink(yes, a few are left in this country). They have a 2-player T-Mek there. Noticed on one of the screens, the image was almost 100% scrambled, full of garbage. Thought that was some sort of video effect(ie on purpose), but it was on 99%of the attract mode, except for the static text overlaid on it.

Kind of a sad sight to see. T-Mek is actually a good arcade game, and it's just sitting there in a messed-up state.

You ever see arcade games(whether now or "back in the day") that never got the proper medical care, lying in their digital feces? I mean, c'mon, fix it please.

It's sometimes worse for pinball machines, where one stuck 'ball means the game can sit there for weeks until a trained tech can get to it.

  11. It seems that Fox wanted to put EVERY freakin' movie they had made into a video game. Back then, it seemed like stupid-crazy idea. But when it did happen(ie a movie becomes a video game), it was something we 99% of the time looked forward to. Sometimes it was good, or it killed an industry(ET).

Nowadays, we are pretty much expecting any action or sci-fi movie to have a video game released pretty much at the same time the movie comes out. You see the "in theaters" ad for a movie, then the next commercial in the block is for the video game port.

  12. The ps1 you can burn a copy of the bad disc and play it, you need to buy something that plugs in to the back of the ps1.

The ps2 is a bit harder to play burned copies.

The ps3 is a lot harder than the ps2 at playing burned copies, but it reads games that neither my ps1 or ps2 could read, and the ps3 reads them perfectly.

The dreamcast, can play burned games without needing to mod it or anything, just burn it, put it in the system, and play it.

If you don't want to buy a ps3 or play burned games, you can take the disc to a hollywood video(are these only in florida?), and they usually have an industrial disc cleaner that they use on their discs. They will throw your games in it if the manager isn't around usually.

Weird. Then again, I once bought a bargain-basement DVD that my regular stereo(with DVD player) woulnd't play, yet the PS2 played the disc just fine.

  13. Lookie!

I bought this on a whim in a big computer-related shopping center in Taipei. The instructions were in Japanese, and even had a floppy disk. It has a nice rapid-fire feature for any of the 10 buttons. There's 2 shoulder buttons!

This controller seems perfect for my EEE PC due to the tiny size. The tiny d-pad gets a little time to get used to, but it's worth it. Wrap it up in its usb cord, and in the backpack it goes. As you can tell with the Chinese keyboard, I bought the EEE in Taipei as well. Controller works just fine in Linux & Windows.

I love little doodads like this.

  14. A manji (whirlwind) appears in The Legend of Zelda for the NES as the dungeon layout of level three. I've seen this symbol in other games of Japanese origin but can not recall which ones at the moment.

Of coarse, as some know, the manji, swatstika, fylfot or sun wheel, is an ancient symbol reaching back thousands of years. It's present in Buddhist and Hindu religious materials currently as well as found in many other elder cultures, such as Norse, Assyrian, Etruscan and Celtic. It was generally viewed as a symbol of well being and a force of nature. That is why it has appeared on games like Zelda and others since in Eastern cultures it's still viewed in a positive light unlike in Western culture on account of it's vilification due to it's association with the Nazi Party.

When I was in Taipei, I saw a neon sign of a Swatstika, reversed from the Nazi version. Asked a couple co-workers who lived there what it was, and they said it was a Bhuddist temple.

Still have a picture of a women's hockey team called the Edmunton Swatstikas, from the 1930s. Heh.
