I haven't torrented all the Davison episodes yet, but I swear there was a lot of Atari 8-bit usage(text screens, mainly) to make computer screens and such. I recognized the font. Am I rite, no? I just discovered this in one of the episodes. A choppy grab of Galaga, with TI-99/4A-like sound effects dubbed in.
-
Did anyone grab this before the link died? I can only find the dingux version of the 7800 emu. I'm having really bad luck trying homebrew emulators(for native, not dingux), where it just locks up.

DRM sucks whether it's on a 2600 or on a modern console, for many reasons. To discuss it even for that Star Castle for 2600(in that thread) is a serious facepalm moment. You're not going to make a living off of homebrew games, so forget ordering that stretch-Lamborghini with the hot tub in back.

Atari Flashback Portable?
S1500 replied to AtariFan#1's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
O.K., thanks for telling me about the Dingoo & GP32, I might just get one of them instead. But I was hoping to get the Atari Flashback Portable since it looks cool. As much as I would love big 80s hair on chicks to come back, Triumph to re-form & make automobiles again, arcades becoming mainstream again, the past is the past. And right now, if you were to take a poll of all people & companies interested in seeing such a flashback coming back, Atari would say 'no', or they wouldn't even respond("Sorry, Atari's in a meeting right now. Can I leave a message?"). With consoles like the Pandora, GP & the Dingoo, they beat any hopes of any official "some piece of hardware with Atari's logo stamped on it" by a long shot. The Atari Flashback 2 was that brief night of fun you had with that beautiful woman from Paris you just happened to run into that one night. Subsequently trying to call her for a relationship or to go see Inception with you will result in just getting voicemail & disappointment. -
Atari Flashback Portable?
S1500 replied to AtariFan#1's topic in AtGames Flashback and Portable Consoles
At this point, it would be a better spending of effort just to get a Dingoo or GP32 & play Atari games on that. There, done. It beats hoping & wishing for a Flashback Portable which might not ever materialize. -
But if I were to take the opportunity to have someone burn me ROMs, perhaps for a small service fee, there would be mobs of angry AtariAgers with pitchforks & torches at my house. I think there's the occasional torrent of an "update set" I see when there's a new version of MAME out. Updated ROMssets and new games that are just-now-supported are included.
-
I know that's the reason. I want it better, obviously. It can just be a bit frustrating when you have your ROMsets all nice & neatly downloaded, only to have some obsoleted on the next release. Maybe it's time for a self-administered CVS.
-
Considering the fact that ROM sets will work in one version of MAME, then die on a later version(due to re-dumps), you might want to hasten putting it down. I won't even get into the occasional frustrations on customizing controls.

It's evil to steal a homebrew ROM, but not from Nintendo?
S1500 replied to Rev's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
I just noticed that the Pac Man Collection for CV has a Copyright symbol next to Opcode. How did Opcode get permission from Namco to make that? -
MAME doesn't have any sort of file association built into it, so double-clickin' a zip file, or drag & drop into the EXE will never work. Probably no emulator will ever support this due to the wild variations in extensions for games.

Retrocity is great. Nice bite-size podcasts without, as you said, the morning zoo stuff. Like, I have to ask, what does E3 have to do with podcasts that are of classic & retro video games? Not much. Really, not much. And yes, he covers more than Retronauts. Oh, can we talk about the video games industry & namedrop Hideo Kajima 5 times more? Jerry, welcome to this thread. I and others said many negative things about other video game podcasts, so enjoy. As for your podcast, I do like the Howard Stern angle to it. You're not afraid to call things out and you wouldn't be afraid to say something outlandish like "oh just download the emulator & try it." So many podcasters seem to think the podcast police(headed by Adam Curry) are going to bust down the door & arrest them if they even hint at downloading a game ROM to play it.
-
Try downloading a freely available ROM like The Adventures of Robby Roto & see if that works.

I recognized the Wizard of Wor soundbyte. There's another one I think from some early coin-op, but I can't recall.

It's a 32X for a previous generation!

It's interesting that the Mondo Coolcast succeeds for the exact same reason the Nintendo Retrocast failed on: going off of tangents & off-topic discussion.

Just finished Deus Ex last night. Now I'm playing the sequel. WOW is the interface horrible & confusing. They jazzed it up to look radial, but at a cost of basic functionality. Tiny numbers on the right for your bio mods(in the original) are now replaced with NO numbers I could find for switching weapons.
-
The fact I can spend many many hours on it, ie get INTO the game. The opposite of the "casual game".
-
On a whim, I bought Deus Ex & the sequel for 20 bucks offa steam. Having fun with Deus Ex so far. I like the stealth angle on it, as opposed to run & gun gameplay. There's more than one way to solve a mission. I've had to go back several saves just to change what my powerups are. Lots of recon work to get things done. Even when "leveled up", it's still easy to die from mistakes. The commandos are hard to stop, that is, until you realize they won't go up stairs. You can shoot from above & just dodge their rockets. This is rather nice, compared to the grenades that can go through walls(thrown by occasional troops) & hurt you. And I may have intentionally got someone's attention so they chase after me & run past a wall-mounted grenade.

I remember I couldn't go past 1985 or so in MAME on my EEE PC 701. And that was on a Linux MAME build. On my Acer Aspire One, I can run almost anything for MAME & MESS, provided it isn't a 2000ish arcade cab.

Ha. Funny. I tried the Crackdown 2 demo, didn't care for it much(too much like the first one), and at the end, it showed some positive quips from reviewers. One of them? Jeremy Parish, host of Retronauts. Heh. OMG! FINAL FANTASY! HIDEO KOJIMA!

It didn't end nicely. People want to buy & play it, but Gorf(the author) obeyed the IP holders request not to. Thus, only a handful of created copies of the game are around, and fetch a higher cost than the real Gorf cabinet. All perceived profits aside, it looks like those who do release the ROM freely(to play on an emulator) AND release cartridges of it please everyone. That, to me, is the happy path. If one wishes to port a game all by themselves & never release it to the public, perhaps it's best not to mention it at all.
-
If that's the case is just getting a cheapo used xbox 1 not an option? Last I checked they were going for ~$29. Can even pick up some component cables for it. Considering I bought the Mercenaries game for 3 bucks, I can't justify buying something 10 times the value of the game just for 1 or 2 games. Oh well, live & learn. I also bought We <3 Katamari thinking it was the 3rd game I didn't play, for PS2. Oops. My "trade fodder" collection is growing, ie games I can't play or have already played. Heck, if that guy who wanted Warplock wasn't in England, I'd ship my copy to him.
-
I'm curious, is there any real reason to have any sort of paranoia about releasing a game? This is really starting to sound like Gorf for the Jaguar all over again, which ended real badly. Plenty of people on here have released homebrew games for the 2600 & a couple other consoles for anyone to play, and it is good. I'm curious why you are taking the exact opposite stance. Are you expecting the original IP holders to bring a cease & desist? I know there's no obligation for you to release this to the community, whether it's a freely-downloadable ROM or in a purchaseable cartridge form, but there is the carrot dangling factor here.

Interesting list. Flatout 2 isn't even listed, but when I try it, I get the blatant message that it's not playable. I know my Tecmo compilation won't work(crashes outright) until I dock down my display to 480p, which is shown in the wikipedia article. Perhaps I'll try kicking it down to 480 and trying Flatout again. I just want to be able to buy the occasional cheap Xbox game at Discland & enjoy it. Sadly, Mercenaries 1 locks up at unexpected times, right when I'm getting into it.
-
I was a bit disappointed to buy Flatout 2, only to find out it doesn't work on my 360. Is there a quickie list of xbox 1 games that don't work on the 360? Something to bring to me when I'm shopping around. It would seem to be quicker to bring a no rather than a yes list.
