  1. While it would be cool to make a standalone music player using the guts of an existing emulator, I think it would be cooler still to have a cartridge you could play on a real 2600 (or run via a Cuttle Cart).  If a large number of tunes can be squeezed into a 32K cart, it'd be fun to pop it into a 2600 and leave it running for a bit, complete with an on-screen interface to allow you to select songs (or just set it to random play!)  If someone does make a 2600-compatible music collection, I'd be glad produce a cartridge version of it.  :)

    Patience... :)

If you find people that are willing to contribute ripped tunes, send them my way :D

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  2. Wouldn't this count as the first method that Lumpbucket described, which is emulation?  I assume you're just hunting out the original code in each game and then working it into your binary?

Sort of. With SID files a Metaformat is created. They won't run on the original target anymore, but on emulation. What I have in mind would run both on the real thing and on emulation.

To stay in the same picture, instead of SID files, I'd be rather creating something like the "Galway Selector" :)

I look forward to seeing (hearing?) the fruits of your labor!  I assume you'll provide some on-screen method of selecting between the different tunes?  Would be cool if you could display the name of the game the tune is from, along with perhaps a counter showing you which "track" you have selected (say, "1 / 30").

Well, the first fruit was the music selector with 8 Parker tunes built into the Star Fire intro. While this was more or less a gimmick only, I'm currently working on a pure music selector with 16 tunes.

Those are good ideas from you. Except instead of the the names, I'd prefer displaying a trademark sprite of each game. Might be funier, or? :)

Currently I've 10 tunes/jingles ripped, right now I'm working on "Acid Drop".

Ah... so much ideas, so little time... maybe for X-Mas :D

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  3. And how would you play the music from Pitfall II?  That game probably has the most advanced BGM of any 2600 titles due to extra chip.

Pitfall II is disqualified for cheating.

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  4. Well, there are three methods of creating standard file formats for systems where there is no "music standard" (or many standards) that are currently in common use.

    Hi there!

Hehe, then I'm working on the 4th way :)

My idea was to create one single giant BIN file that contains all original 2600 music ever made. Since I already managed to squeeze almost all music from Parker games into one 4K binary, I assume that one 32K cartridge would be enough for the classic stuff. 95% of Atari games don't have any real music at all.

I'm working on this occasionally. If anyone is wanting to submit some music rips to this project, feel free to contact me :D

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  5. Hi there!

Cool stuff! Some friendly Commodore soul scanned every single Epyx advertisment that was ever released in any Compute! magazine!

So I just uploaded 21 brandnew advertisment pages for Epyx games.

If you have any old mags with more Epyx adds I don't have, please contact me. Did Epyx buy pages in the ANTIC mag for example?

Currently I'd be most interested in advertisments for the "Star Fire / Fire One" and "Gun Fight / Sea Wolf 2" releases from Epyx.

Anyway, enjoy what's offered right now. I bet the advertisment for "Dragonriders of Pern" is one of the coolest you've ever seen! :)

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  6. lol like i said it should be in off topic but u atari guys seem to know SOOO much about classic gaming that i figured this would be the place to go for advice

Pretty close then. Ya know, there's a board called 'Classic Gaming' on this page, too. Might be a good compromise between here and Off Topic :)

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  7. This is a problem from the import of Steve Knox's database into the TG database.  Yes, we are well aware of SEVERAL issues and problems with the database.  We are currently in the process of re-architecting the whole site to include the database, so please bear with us and our mess.

Ah, no problem. Please consider my post just a bug-report, not an attack :)

I'm currently in the process of recreating the Scores page on the Epyx Shrine. due the lack of score submissions I decided to give-up on recording them on my own, but rather just sort of mirror the current TG scores for the Epyx games and send people your way.

The only thing I'm currently concerned about his how I can keep my page updated without checking the complete TG database every week...

You don't offer customized displays or something like that, which people could merge into their hompages?

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  8. Ok, what is the problem?  What am I missing?

First, there is 6 disciplines listed, when the game only has 4.

Then, both the disciplines "Footbag" & "Hacky Sack", which in my eyes should refer to one and the same discipline, feature each a high score from Ron Corcoran. Now, if that wasn't strange enough having two different names for the same discipline, how can one and the same guy submit scores for each? Different scores BTW... ?!?

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  9. Huhu!

    Manuel

  10. It's worse than that.  DiStella names it's labels after the address of the line of code.  So the instruction at $F55E is labeled LF55E, the problem is that there are about 30 or so labels in both files with the same address, thus the same label in each file.  When I put the two together I get mismatch errors.  How can I configure DiStella to give each file a different kind of label?

Maybe that's too easy a solution, but how about Search & Replace "LF" with "LD" in one of the files for example?

    Greetings,

    Manuel

    Manuel

  12. Hi Zero!

You forgot Phaser Patrol for the 2600...

Oh, you're right. But then I normally don't count SC games as valid 2600 games :D

I guess Elite doesn't meet your criteria, since it's sort of vector graphics... How about Rescue On Fractalus? Sort of a graphical hack that they made a game around, but oh well...

You're right about Elite. And with Rescue on Fractalus you're traveling in an earth bound vehicle, or? Disqualifies as space game then :)

On MAME.DK I just found a list of recommandations for Star Fire players:

    Star Wars

    The Empire Strikes Back

    Return of the Jedi

    Tunnel Hunt

    Tailgunner

    Star Hawk

    Space Seeker

    Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom

    Gravitar

    Liberator

    Star Trek

    Tac/Scan

    Ambush

    Blaster

    Exerion

    Star Luster

Seems like Im gonna check these out next, one by one... :)

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  13. how come the graphics on the NES look so much more advanced? dont get me wrong, 2600 is my favorite system of all. when it comes to grpahics, however, the nes looks much more advanced, textured, and faster. cna someone clear my mind of this brain-buster?

    Hi Finguzz!

Well, unlike all those big companies keep pretending, the bit # doesn't really matter for the graphics quality.

Consider that even the original PC-Engine is runned by an 8-Bit processor.

Responsible for the graphics quality is mostly the graphics chip. And here, the 2600 has one of the weakest available :)

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  14. Probably Star Raiders.  Had all the right components; you could warp to and dock with space stations to refuel -- of course, you also had to defend those space stations from encroaching alien attacks.  On the VCS it came with Video Touch Pad controller that allowed you to change views, flip to the sector map, engage warp, etc.

All that is true for Starmaster as well. Except it didn't utilize the the pads, but the console switches.

    Maybe this helps:

    Star Raiders: s_StarRaiders_2.png

    Starmaster: s_Starmaster_3.png

I'd almost guess Starmaster. Star Raiders sucks! :D

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  15. Hi there!

I've just beaten Crash Bandicoot XS. It's really ok. If you liked Warioland 4, you should definetely give Crash a try, too!

If you don't count Castlevania as pure Jump'n'Run, then Crash is the best J'n'R I played on the GBA so far. :)

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  16. I just received a preliminary version of the artwork today.  (I'm not doing it myself.)  I'm impressed.  I think everyone else will be too.

    What, no contest?

    Hehe :)

Can't wait to see what cool designs Christiana will submit for the Robot City contest :!: :D :!:

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  17. Hi there!

For research purposes regarding improvements of my Star Fire game, I'm researching all about this type of game. Especially I'm looking for other *comparable* games for 8-Bit machines.

So far I've completed the research on the VCS and the C64 on my own, here's the resulting Top 5s! :

    Atari 2600:

    Starmaster

    Star Raiders

    Star Ship

    Star Voyager

    Star Wars

    C64:

    Fire Storm

    Sky Fox 2

    Star Fox

    Space Hunter

    Quest for the Space Beagle

For the Atari 8 bitters I got a few suggestions already, but there might be better ones:

Star Fire, Star Raiders, Star Wars, Star Raiders 2 & Star Riders

Ok, what I'm looking for is this:

1st person cockpit view space shooters in arcade style, done with sprite graphics, not vectors.

I'm looking for more suggestions on the Atari 8-Bit computers, as well as any other 8-Bit computer or cosole, plus early - let's say pre '86 arcades, with that certain kind of gameplay.

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  18. Yes- Star Riders by Paul Lay, a type-in from Page 6/ New Atari User magazine.

Not technically a space game but what about Paul Woake's Encounter (and another magazine type-in version called Deathzone)?  And, of course, Star Raiders, the daddy of the 3D shoot-em ups.

(all games are at http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/atari/ )

    Hi Avram!

Thanks for sugesting these! I just finished checking them all.

The top 5 Atari 8-Bit Star Fire lookalikes so far are:

    Star Fire :D

    Star Raiders

    Star Wars

    Star Raiders 2

    Star Riders

I especially liked the 'firing' animation in Star Raiders. Hm... are there tools available that allow ripping sprite graphics on the 8 bitters?

I think I'll continue the research part in the classic forum now...

    Greetings,

    Manuel

  19. Is this a new version from the one that was already released?

Yes. Erik was still working on it. With this current version he decided it's time for the feature-stop.

From now on, he'll only bugfix the game, so he's waiting for feedback regarding that. He's especially looking for feedback how the PAL version is looking/working on the real thing, since he can't test this on his own.

Since YOU are the the beta testers it'll depend on YOUR feedback/bugtracking when the game will be done, so the more you support Erik in the process, the quicker you get the game :)

BTW: Can't wait to see the label artwork, as I'm expecting a masterpiece here ;)

    Greetings,

    Manuel
