  1. I'm very interested in this. It's success will most likely depend on how gimmicky the idea turns out. It might just become another "Munchables"/"Tornado Outbreak"
  2. Hi there! Another first for the "Playing..." series. Or a second? Indeed, this Sega Arcade conversion has absolutely nothing in common with the already featured S.D.I. game from Cinemaware but the name This one is made for all the old-school shoot'em fans in the world. It doesn't get much simpler than this: You're controlling an SDI satellite, shooting everything on the screen that moves. The game is divided into two separate waves: Each stage starts with the "offensive" one, and if you don't manage to succeed here, you get a second chance of defending america in the "defensive" wave. You're doing pretty much the same in both waves, it's just that the offensive wave overall has more of an Asteroids feel to it, while the defensive wave is more reminiscent of Missile Command. Besides a good dozen of different enemy attack patterns, the only other gameplay element is a second satellite that'll release an extra life when being shot. The controls are a good example for a clever conversion: Since at home you usually can only hold one joystick, the game will move just the crosshair while fire is pressed and both (satellite & crosshair) when it is released -> And it works! Overall I admit the game is pretty shallow, but at least it provides some solid after-work stress relief Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another Sega Arcade conversion in the form of "Thunderblade", but first it'll continue with something else. Greetings, Manuel
  3. What an impressive project! Count me in for a copy! Interrupts.
  4. Sure, there are still some games on the way, but at the moment it more looks like "High Hopes Top 3s" for the rest of 2010... Also and maybe that's just me, but I can't remember the announcement of a single interesting Wii game at E³, games.com or TGS besides MOM. Even in the time since then, there was Epic Micky and... nothing?!? They definitely are, but I couldn't really confirm those dates. (I'm actually also interested in Sin & Punishment 2 and Enclave and maybe some more) For the first draft of the list I actually just went through http://www.play.com/Games/Wii/6-/ComingSoon.html which is often pretty accurate for European dates. And well, it has MOM and it's missing the others...
  5. Hi there! With all the 2009 games out of the door, it's time to look forward to what possibly might become the Wiis final* good quarter: Tatsunoko Vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - The Crystal Bearers Red Steel 2 The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces Metroid: Other M Fragile Dreams Silent Hill: Shattered Memories Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Calling Rune Factory Frontier *At least I still don't see much on the horizon beyond Q1... Greetings, Manuel
  6. Hi there! I can't believe that this one isn't available on the NES: No, really. Konami converted everything and their grandma to the NES, they even founded 2 sub-companies to undergo Nintendos 5-games-per-year limit, so it's amazing to see this game is available on the C64, but not on the NES Anyway, Typhoon is an 8 stage shoot'em up that mixes 194X like horizontal scrolling stages with Afterburnerish 3D stages, each of them ending with more or less impressive boss fights. The 3D stages are very fast and enjoyable, but also a bit simple - almost like bonus rounds; You can get pretty far here when ignoring what's happening on the screen, just moving your plane around in big circles The 2D stages is where the real meat can be found. They're very hard in contrast, actually downright unfair in spots, but also in my opinion the best 1942 variant I've been "Playing..." so far. The main problem of the game is the medicore to ugly art. Impressive 3D movement and sprite multiplexing aside, the enemies and backgrounds nowhere look as good as they should. With a better pixel artist and some more playtesting this could've been a killer app! Still some good blasting fun for a night: Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another Konami game in the form of "WEC Le Mans", but first it'll continue with something else. Greetings, Manuel
  7. Pick-Up Sticks looks great!
  8. I'm still hoping to see Rainbow Islands on the VC. I think there are a few Taito titles for the PC-Engine available already, like Chase HQ.
  9. Ah, thank heavens I managed to finish that pyramid dungeon in time for this weeks Heroes episode Before that I finished off the Kobolds and created a new dual class Cleric-Magician party member. A bit late doing this on the games final "Playing..." night, but well... Now, this was a fun RPG ride, but I'm also glad to bail out of it on the fifth day I think later episodes of this series will be even more fun. It'll be interesting to see when they get the balancing right and if one has a good enough story so that I'll actually have to complete it Some future day the "Playing..." series may see its sequel "Curse of the Azure Bonds", but first it'll continue with something else.

    Music Update

Ah, I saw that before, I think you posted that elsewhere already. good song indeed BTW: My wife's a big fan of this one, I also think it's pretty cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLLxdcrk0-s
  11. Wow, that's the best thing that can happen with these articles, when I manage to motivate someone to check out a game themselves! ===== Again it was already well past midnight, when I considered further exploration of the Kobold Cave more important than reporting my progress I really liked my adventures last night, as they were a lot more story driven than just plain hack'n'slashing through dungeons. First I visited a silver dragon for some advice, then I helped a nomad camp defending against Kobold hordes, which was a pretty cool part, with the kobolds attacking in three large waves. Kinda like the AD&Ds Alamo, only I secured a happy ending here Next came the exploration of another spooky place, the old library of Phlan. There weren't many random encounters there, but two very tough battles, one against a basilisk and another one against a spectre Just consider how mighty the spectre in the DC universum is... But well, after reloading 3-4 times we made it In the current mission I'm trying to end the Kobold threat once and for all, visiting them in their lair... BTW: I was very surprised when I realized that my cleric hit a level cap at 6 already. So I'm stuck with "Cure Light wounds" for the entire game?!?
  12. It's been a while and I only played the GBA version, but something on the screenshot reminded me of it And I should've realized that the SNES has more colors.
  13. SNES I think. Maybe something like Breath of Fire 2?
  14. Kinda figured the second part, the nintendolife review mentions that there's 5700 points worth of DLC for the game

    Music Update

Yay! My wife just bought me the complete CD! Such a brilliant masterpiece, I love every single song My favourite of the day, 2nd song on the disc. Requires 2-3 listenings, but then it'll grab you:
  16. Make sure to create an extra thief to join the starting party. I'm usually too lazy for character generation, so I just went with the 3 default characters. This feels a bit underpowered at times and tonight I hit a spot only a thief could pass ===== Since I was more or less just hack'n'slashing through two more sidequest dungeons this time, I thought to highlight one thing I like about the game and one thing I don't: The bad is that the magic spells seem a bit unbalanced. Most spells are useless except for 1-2 special situations, while actually needed healing and attack spells are too few. E.g. it gets very tedious to heal 3-4 level 5 characters with just the "Cure Light Wounds" spell... The good is the enormous freedom you have in the game. Not only in the superb tactical combat system, but also in the story and quest bits. E.g. when I got a mission from an arrogant nobleman to return his treasure chest, I went all the way getting it, but then just forced it open, claiming the content myself

Hi there! Kinda insprired by recent news... I've seen this performance live in 1997, one of the best moments in my entire life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXD6Gtinvbc Greetings, Manuel
  18. So I spent another night RPGing, losing totally track of time. So once again I was already way too tired to report before going to bed While my characters now slowly reach their 5th levels, the AD&D system kicks in little by little. The fights now start to get really tactical and interesting. I guess the real fun begins once my magician is able to cast fireballs I managed to complete two more missions, one was just fighting back and forth through a spooky keep, but the other was quite fun, as my party had to disguise themselves as monsters so they could sneak unscathed through the territory. The night ended with halfway exploring a robber's den, with traps and thieves all over the place. I'm having a hard time here managing all the loot
  19. I liked the demo for FFCC:MLaaD How many levels does the full version offer? And does it require downloading tons of additional extras like the other FFCC on Wiiware?
  20. huh? it's this game is not a FPS although it is 1st person perspective and you do shoot things come to think of it, but normally in FPS's you control the movement. Well, it is a FPS, just on rails
  21. Hi there! The only 'Gold Box' game from SSI that hit the NES: Well, it got the two horrible Dragonlace action games, also Dragonstrike and Hillsfar, but this is the only full blown AD&D RPG that got converted to the NES. Of course I had to check this version out It is surprisingly close to the computer versions, although the graphics certainly suffered. They're even more iconized here and also lost a lot of color. On the plus side you get background music - that is if you like NES muzak The whole user interface got streamlined to work on the NES and some areas of the game also got simplified, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I think most changes were even for the better, offering some convenience that later entries in 'Gold Box' series would introduce just as well. (The PC version of the game doesn't even support a mouse! ) As you might remember, SSI had three different RPG series running on their turn-based AD&D engine: Savage Frontier, Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms. With Pool of Radiance being the first of the bunch, most of the development energy apparently went into the engine, while the upcoming games had much more story and depth to offer. Here you really start on level 1 with 8 hitpoints, empty pockets and a lone magic spell in your book Still, I had an enjoyable first night with the game. I mostly explored 3-4 districts of the city Phlan and upped my 3 starting characters to levels 3-4 with a few early missions you get assigned to from the city council. Greetings, Manuel

    My Personal Top 10

My workmate just delivered it to my desk!
  24. I tend to agree with you here - regarding the game It is rather shallow, even for an Arcade game. It starts very promising though, I remember really enjoying the forest stage on the Amiga back in the day. It's been very entertaining to push stormtroopers into trees or making them hit the various Ewok traps. Unfortunately it's going downhill from there.
