Best of Interplay (1988-1994)
Cybergoth replied to Cybergoth's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
I left out all sports, racing and simulation games. They have a tendency of getting old real fast What I actually did forget though is Warcraft, IIRC was the first still published by Interplay. (I think it came out only a month or two after Blackthorne.) -
Just beat "Wings 2 - Aces High" for the SNES. Can't really recommend playing it, it's nothing compared to the original Wings on the Amiga...

Hi there! Six years after Choplifter, Dan Gorlin returned to form with Typhoon Thompson: The full title is "Typhoon Thompson in Search for the Sea Child", which is also a good summary of your mission already. The sea child was kidnapped by a bunch of sea kobolds, so the sea spirits equipped TT with a boat and weapons to fight them, sending him out to return the child. In an inevitable comparison with Choplifter, the gameplay actually does share some aspects, even when considering that TT happens in a full blown 3D environment: First you shoot the kobolds sea homes, then when they're coming out, you shoot their vessels. Succeeding here has them dropping into the water, where you can collect them. After clearing a level of all kobolds, you can exchange them for goods stolen from the sea spirits. The game has excellent and very precise analog mouse control. Once you get used to it, it's pure fun to zip around in your boat. The title music is good, in game sound effects even better. The graphics are marvellous for their time. Everything runs totally smooth and showcases some excellent animation. The engine even runs some funny story-telling intermissions between the levels. The 3D is very fast and the action furious during the first 4 levels, but then there's so many objects on the screen that it significantly slows down. In fact, my game came to a sudden halt in the 5th level, with an error message saying "Ran Out of Free Objects", so I can't tell wether this game has an ending or not. I think this was one of the very first ation games unleashing the full potential of 16-Bit computing power in order to go beyond the design limits for 8-Bit action games. Some future day the "Playing..." series may see another 3D Action game in the form of Afterburner. Greetings, Manuel

Struggling with the [media] tag myself, but I could at least get the 'embedding' working for you

It sounds a lot more like Final Fight though BTW: From Nintendolifes 9/10 Mario & Sonic Review:

740K worth of learned lessons? [/cynical] I put it on the list after seeing a promising trailer and reading a small article about it in our "Wii Magazin". Good to see that not all of my Q4 candidates are disasters like Star Wars Any impression on the upcoming Dragon Ball game already? Maybe that is going to deliver another surprise?

I dunno...could be. Seems like more of a niche thing, though. How about Marvel Super Hero Squad or Bakugan: Battle Brawlers then? Sure, everybody loves Curling, no? I've seen it on Wii before though. IIRC it was in Deca Sports and in Winter Sports 2008 also...

IGN gave it 65% only: http://uk.wii.ign.com/articles/103/1035150p1.html

Hi there! I don't think any words could describe The Toy Dolls better than this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNqG51cG4kw Greetings, Manuel

The more I'm reading about this new ABahB version, the more I'm getting interested. It almost sounds a bit like a 2D-ish Zack & Wiki to me now

I'm not sure if we have the same videos in the European channel, most likely not. Anyway I loved the Metroid video they recently had, starring the girl that made that totally awesome Metroid costume: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_rzdB5a4kLAo/R0MrGq7jp8I/AAAAAAAAEgs/Ii6bHnr7mww/s1600/SAMUS.jpg

I really liked the interconnected world of the original game, though the remake is probably a better game for abandoning that. It's a good thing for people like me, who don't like freely explorable worlds

I originally was very interested in Ju-On, but at some point I read in a hands-on that it's basically an on-rails haunted house simulator. There's 5 thirty minute rides in there, where you're following a given path with a flashlight in hands. Sounded too shallow for my taste, so I didn't list it. BTW: Do you think Drawn to Life is going to be a surprise hit?

I just bought Castles I+II in a compilation from http://www.gog.com , looking forward to play them soon. I'm a bit surprised that Castles I did better in the poll, I always thought Castles II was supposed to be better -
I never liked the NES original so I think I'll rather get my next 2D fix from Muramasa instead
-
I like them all equally I think. Everyone can write a great song, even Al Bano

No, I'd compare Matia Bazar more to this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyGqvJKjiDE

They themselves called it "Italo Dance" IIRC. I'm sure you remember this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r0n9Dv6XnY

Italian music sure reigned supreme in the 80's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPswk_8YKlQ

That's a very interesting point. I'm also heavily affected by motion sickness, albeit the only recent game I experienced this is Deadly Creatures. (The 3D Battle scenes of Fire Emblem also, but they can be deactivated.) ===== I added Folklore and Resistance to my list on top, I somehow forgot about them at the time of the orignal post.

Hi there! My all-time favorite song from Gianna Nannini - IMO one of the very best 80's tunes that time forgot. That incredible power in her voice. I even still like the look she has in that video. I guess I'm forever stuck in the 80's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT_CTOllIDA Greetings, Manuel

That's good to hear. I just learned that there's a GotY Edition available, I suppose this is the one to get? Thanks, that's a fair warning. I think I'll play it some day on the PC then

Did I get you right then, that when forced to choose between the two, you'd go with Ninja Gaiden? Interesting enough, after reading your comment I went on watching several videos of the game last night, incl. the Gametrailers review, and I must say that in spite of the promsing name the art direction and setting didn't appeal much too me. It also seemed the main character is more the dislikable sleazebag than a kick ass Duke Nukem type, or am I getting a wrong impression here?

Hi there! Reading through many a review of the early 2006/2007 PS3 releases, these magnificent seven sounded the most interesting to me: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Orange Box Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Ninja Gaiden Sigma The Darkness Heavenly Sword Resistance: Fall of Man Folklore What do you think of these now, were they worth their money? Greetings, Manuel
