first game with on-screen prompts?
almightytodd replied to ComputerSpaceFan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Gauntlet from 1985 might be later to the party, but what I found interesting was that it provided guidance both in the attract screens, and then during game-play. https://archive.org/details/arcade_gauntlet -
...So while we're on the topic of a software emulated C64, does anyone have anything positive to say about the Cloanto C64 Forever package? I mean, I get it that it's just a re-packaged VICE emulator with some pre-packaged software titles and a convenient front-end, but I think their $14.95 asking price isn't outrageous for the added convenience. I'm also curious about their offerings for the Amiga, where it looks like they have the most pain-free path towards getting an Amiga experience up and running.

For me it's all about using emulation for time-travel and to experience technology that was not accessible to me when it was new. Even if your family was well-off enough during the early 1980s to own a home computer during the 8-bit era; you had to choose ONE system and stay devoted to it. But now I can open an Atari 800 in one window, and enter the moves to have it play chess against a TI99/4A in another window on the same PC. I can write a small BASIC program on a PET and then port it to a Timex/Sinclair. I can have "Pac Man Night", where I play rounds of Pac Man games across several different platforms, one-after-the-other. The 70s were my teenage years, so I witnessed the transition of computers changing from million-dollar machines in corporate offices to affordable home appliances and now multi-function devices that can be carried in your pocket. If you've ever seen Disney's motion picture, "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" from 1969, it opens with a scene where the President of Medford College is explaining to the Dean that a "...computer is a luxury this college just cannot afford". Less than 10 years later, there were TRS-80 computers in Radio Shack stores across America selling for less than 800 bucks.

Dead Timex Sinclair 1000-Help

The TS1000 was my first computer, so it holds a special place in my heart. Having one to physically "have" it is one thing - but if you actually want the experience of "using" one, the next best thing (...maybe better, actually), is the EightyOne emulator. It displays an on-screen keyboard to make it easy to use the clever one-key-per-command BASIC programming interface, and the view screen is size-able and includes adjustable video effects. -
So glad to see this tradition continue...

New Computer Space Simulator
almightytodd replied to Pinball Wizzard's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Hey Moose, glad to see you're still around and doing cool stuff. I just loaded your Computer Space simulator on my Windows 10 machine and it runs fine. I've always had at least one old XP machine around, so when my Windows 7 machine complained about it, I just left it alone. I was pretty sure it was a bogus false alarm when it happened, but I was curious as to whether anyone else had run into anything like that here. I'm glad you bumped this thread and replied to me so I can check out your other software. Thanks! -
Atari Flashback Portable!

Isn't the "doctor.bin" a PAL demo? (2008 Trilobit, right? ...and it's in STEREO!) -
Hey, what's up with this? I don't see any "Winnie-the-Pooh" characters anywhere in this ad... ???

Nintendo Classic Mini announced
almightytodd replied to Atariboy's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Wrong version - I'm talking about the 1994 film. I have it on VHS and was released on DVD in the past, but currently available only at a premium price, and no Blu-ray at all... It is available as a digital download from Amazon and Google Play, so I guess it is available to "be purchased immediately on modern media", but not ALL modern media... -

Repository of DOSBOX classic games?
almightytodd replied to Omega-TI's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
Hmmm, I have no doubt it's comprehensive - 300+ Gigabytes zip file download; estimated 33 hours... ...I'll have to pass. It's easier to just browse Archive.org for MSDOS Games and play them right in your browser... -
Honestly, these days I spend most of my time playing homebrews while they're in development. But my list of original games goes something like this: 1 Phaser Patrol Superior graphics and game-play 2 Space Invaders The game that "saved" the VCS 3 Ms Pac Man What Pac Man should have been 4 Crystal Castles I know there are complaints, but I like it! 5 Yars' Revenge Just a good blend of game-play and graphics 6 Tennis I'm a tennis player, so I'm biased 7 Jr. Pac Man ...usually on "teddy bear" level 8 Missile Command A great port! 9 Video Chess I can never win! But I enjoy the challenge! 10 BMX Air Master Good graphics, sounds, and game-play

Nintendo Classic Mini announced
almightytodd replied to Atariboy's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The implementation of the screen for the NES mini is yet to be seen. This is the first plug-and-play retro device I'm aware of that is designed to go right into HDMI. The first time I saw Stella on an LCD screen, I thought it was super cool! As was mentioned earlier - it's like the images on the box and in the manual the way the game designers imagined it to look. But then when the television screen-simulation features were added to Stella, I found that it added a sense of nostalgia and "authenticity" that was missing. When I play new home-brews like Donkey Kong VCS, Space Rocks, and Pac Man 2600, I prefer the video-simulation look so I can imagine what these games would have looked like BITD. I would prefer an option - as is found in Stella and many other emulators. I'm rather doubtful that Nintendo can or will offer that feature, and still make their price-point... -
I didn't play it BITD, but when I got into DOSBox I discovered a game called, "Outer Ridge" - sort of a first person perspective/3D Asteroids. Games I played BITD included Prince of Persia, Tetris, and of course DOOM and the games of that genre that followed... Hexen, Descent, Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, and Redneck Rampage. I loved the way Moonshine would take away your pain in Redneck Rampage, but if you drank too much the screen would tilt, and you couldn't walk in a straight line...

Nintendo Classic Mini announced
almightytodd replied to Atariboy's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Well, I've got a Flashback 2 & 4; a Flashback Intellivision; and an off-brand NOAC plug-and-play with a bunch of look-alike games... ...so this would seem like an appropriate addition. I'm curious about the HDMI output though - this is the main departure from all of the other "Flashback-style" devices. The up-scaling implementation needs to be done right so that it doesn't interfere with game-play. Some video-options would be nice; like those offered by the Stella emulator. It looks like whoever makes the Analogue Nt has figured out how to do it right; albeit at a somewhat excessive price. -
Atari 800 - Best Game Pack : Releases
almightytodd replied to starwindz's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I've been following this thread all along, but waiting for the right moment to "pull the trigger". I see there have been no new posts (...well, except for this one. ...Sorry) since April so maybe it's time. -
I have to say my favorite is Stellar Track, with a close second to the Commodore PET version. I accept that many of the other versions are technically "better", but I just never had enough time to devote to really getting into them. The joystick interface in Stellar Track is more "menu like"...

Microsoft has created a hobbyist/novice version of BASIC called, "Small Basic" that returns to the roots of BASIC as a beginner's language. It might be worth a look.

Pre-crash systems are slowly being forgotten.
almightytodd replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Console Discussion
My emulation set-up gives me lots of choices for look-and-feel. I have a USB Atari-style joystick plugged into my PC, with a VGA splitter that sends video to my LCD monitor and to a 90's era TV. So I can dial in video effects to whatever degree I want, to emulate the look of a CRT on the monitor, or I can just send the output to the real thing. The TV is small enough that I can even turn it on its side when I'm playing portrait-oriented MAME games like Space Invaders, and get the full effect. I find that I prefer using the computer keyboard over the joystick for most games. Sometimes it's fun to pick a game genre such as Pac Man or Space Invaders, and then play it on a number of different emulated computers and consoles in succession. Another fun thing to do is to have two emulators running at the same time, with an Intellivision playing chess against an Atari 800 or TI 99/4A It's something that wouldn't have been possible back in the day unless you were super wealthy, or had lots of friends with different systems. -
...And by "this thread" I mean the topic I started to promote my YouTube video about video games from the black and white era. I re-did the sound-track and posted the new version on YouTube today. The video covers raster games only (no vector graphics) and has a few glaring omissions that have already been mentioned in this thread (Sprint, Stunt Cycle, and Boot Hill). Also, I don't know if anyone has mentioned the Kee Games Drag Race that was the inspiration for the Activision 2600 version. And finally, there seems to be no love for, "Space Race"; probably because it's another of the pre-microprocessor-based coin-ops so there's no MAME ROM for it. Everyone remembers "Pong" but few remember Atari's second game - as few remember the second astronaut to set foot on the Moon (Buzz Aldrin - you'd think with a name like "Buzz" people would remember...). It was also the second video game that I personally played (...after Pong, of course - and I did get a chance to put a couple of quarters into a Computer Space cabinet a few years later as well).

You Tube Video: The Black & White era
almightytodd replied to almightytodd's topic in Arcade and Pinball
I took your advice and re-did the audio with the background music more in "the background". I deleted the 2013 version, but by doing so I've broken the link at the start of this topic. I just need to see if I remember how to embed a YouTube link into a post... -
I think Tigervision is the best company to collect for
almightytodd replied to homerwannabee's topic in Atari 2600
The Video Game Critic hated Marauder but I always thought it was fun. His biggest gripe with the game is that it is too easy. That may be the case but sometimes I'd rather enjoy the pleasure of just kicking ass over the challenge of becoming super skilled at something that is of no value in the "real world". The classic PC game, "Shadow Warrior" made fun of this point of view when the game character (Lo Wang) says, "Much rather kick ass than solve puzzle..."
