If I would pay 50 bucks, I would expect an elite forum where I and others of my kind could hang out and not have to mingle with the riffraff. The poor and semi-poor sicken me.

This forum isn't already elite enough for you?

Its worth it just to have the precious red + sign by my name...
The precious, the precious!

It is 2.78 Gb.
There is another torrent labelled 'SoftSide Magazines in PDF format'. It is 2.85 Gb. However there are no seeders at all for that one - don't know what is in it.
Confusing!
Could someone post the completed versions of the above files somewhere? Rapidshare or wherever? Then I'd have a complete set and I assume others would like this.
the 2.85 Gig one was only up for a few minutes before I deleted it (or as least I thought I deleted it - it shows anonymous now but it is not in my list).. The only difference is there was an extra directory for artwork which I removed since it was not complete. I only seeded it for about 10 minutes and never had a peer so I have no clue how it would still exist or have aver sent any data??
-
Sounds like a fun idea.. One person would need to be the organizer, get a list, then send everyone one name/address (so everyone has one person to send, and of course will be on the receive list from one person) then put up a post for everyone to put up a picture of what they received on Christmas..
The organizer would have the name so if someone flaked out they could be identified thought with a ten dollar limit plus shipping how bad could it be?
Fun idea!
-
Finally got it all - 4 days 16 hours!
I'm seeding it but only one leecher for now.
Are you possibly blocking incoming requests? There has to be something wrong with your setup or firewall setttings if it is taking over 4 days..
-
Thump, is this something you are planning on working on, or would be interested in doing? I'd be willing to lend my time, scanning in issues, doing corrections, etc...
Hey there, sorry to say I am not planning on BYTE anytime soon. I have a few issues but they still have a (minimal) presence on the web so I thought it best to steer clear.. I do plan to do ROM (not the Atari magazine) and KiloBaud (magazine done by the same person who started BYTE - Just waiting for the last few issues) at some point.
If someone was planning on doing BYTE I would certainly donate any issues I had.
-
I'd be happy to host this on Armchair Arcade for those who don't use torrents and are not paid members of Rapidshare.
If you can do that it would be excellent...
-
I'm getting a consistently good download rate, from about 90k - 140k (20k for upload). Just need to get a few more seeders once they've finished. I'll be seeding all weekend once mine finishes (~ 5 hrs.).
@ Thumpnugget
I was just telling someone yesterday about the magnitude of the projects that you're working on with these magazines, and they were amazed. You should be inducted into the "Atari History Hall of Fame" for preserving all this stuff.

I appreciate that
I'm currently in school full time and working full time so I was looking for a project that was fairly simple to do (read: no heavy brain activity) and could be dropped for periods of time and picked up without losing where I was in the process. I can put 20 minutes a day into this and still feel like I am getting something accomplished. -
Greetings!
While waiting for the rest of the SoftSide magazines to show up on eBay and elsewhere so I can complete that run I was able to complete a couple of other magazine runs. One of these is STart magazine. I have just finished getting the entire run scanned (just have to reprocess and OCR the scans) and hope to make them available in the near future.
I was also lucky enough to get all of the disks for STart. I would like to include these disk images with the PDFs. For the Analog/Antic/SoftSide I was able to convert the disks/cassettes I had and find the rest online. I am assuming there is an ST equivalent to the ATR format for emulators and making real disks. I don't have the equipment or expertise on the ST to do the conversion.
I am looking for someone to ship these disks to that is willing to convert them so I can include them with the scans. Anyone want to take on the thankless task of imaging 42 disks??

I have a lot of these MSA format, if that would help.
~telengard
It looks like the only missing form the archive site is Vol 1 No 3...
I'm missing that one also... hmm
~telengard
I have that disk if someone can make an MSA from it...

Well sweet, that makes it too easy
Only one disk to do... -
Sorry about the delay in the torrent this morning. I have my server in the middle of my living room right now (having carpets replaced in the house) and the chord was kicked out this morning.. It's going again now! Looks like everyone is at about 48%...
Any chance you could upload this to Rapidshare? That's far faster and more reliable IME -- and with a free account you'll earn brownie points.
If you do this, be sure to accept the free account after uploading the first file. That gets you your points and allows more than 10 downloads total.
Good thought though from my end the limiter is my allowed upload speed from CableOne.. It looks like RapidShare has a maximum upload size of 200 Megs, the Torrent is just under 3 Gigs.. Does RapidShare have any restrictions to the downloader?

Issue 63 (Vol 7 No 3) Is not in the torrent but I saw a picture of it so I know it exists, it was in a pile of magazines I won on eBay two months back but the seller picked that time to decide to no longer send his stuff out and eBay canceled his account (crazy timing - he had 9,700+ feedbacks... his feedbacks suddenly went all negative and his account was canceled by eBay).
He may have died. It happens. Family can't access his account.
I was able to get the money back from PayPal and he kept responding that he *for sure* had sent it out... Which I might have bought if there were not dozens of others making the same claims on his eBay feedback at that point.

I've had a few emails asking about the torrent.. I've really been hoping to find the last few issues but they have not popped up. I really don't want to make a DVD set until I at least get all the magazines (The first 62 issues are done - missing the last few) but as that may take a while I would at least like to get a torrent going of the current set for those that want it.
Here is a link to the torrent... It will probably be slow for a while.
I'm sorry if we discussed this before but it's been a while. Have you been able to verify in any way if any issues after issue 62 exists?
Allan
Hey there.. Issue 62 exists, it is part of the torrent

I have nothing confirmed to exist after issue 63 other than the Wikipedia article that mentioned the last issue was in august of 1984... Issue 63 is March of 84.

Sorry to have not responding as of late.. I was a bit behind on things and just now catching up. I have a few disks people have emailed me. I'll be going through them and reposting where everything is at and bugging those who have stuff that is too big to email...

Game #2: Stellar Conflict
This AIM Game is different than the others in that it says it requires 32K instead of the usual 16. I'm not sure why as it appears to be about 5K..
Screenshots:
I'd like to explain how this game works but I really did not understand it. Basically you are shooting lasers and bouncing of the mirrors and trying to hit targets on the other side.
AIM makes a great box again:
And the instruction are the usual AIM Software standard, short and sweet:
Here is the game: StellarConflict.zip

Yes! Two more excellent games from AIM Software.
Game #1: Planet Patrol
This game is a Defender "clone". Very exciting. Here are some screen shots:
There are actually aliens swarming in that second screenshot but i could never get a screen capture to get them (they blink like crazy - they do stop when the trigger is pulled though they stop being visible at all at that point).
The box is much better than the game:
Don't forget the detailed Instructions:
Enjoy the Game: PlanetPatrol.zip

Great!
Some of the game titles in red can be found on our site.

I went through the atarimania site and found 12 not already saved and added them to the current ATRs... good progress!
I updated the spreadsheet (there only ones missing are the programs in red)

Great work! I really appreciate this! Not sure what it was, but there was some intangible quality about SoftSide that made it stand out from other magazines of the era ... Always one of my favourites!
I have the "Best of SoftSide" (Atari version of course) Compilation - Do you want that as well?
Yes, that would be excellent! Thanks much.

Greetings people! I apologize in advance for the length of this post.
I’ve been working on creating a set of PDF scans of SoftSide magazine. For those that do not know much about this magazine it was published starting in October of 1978 until sometime in 1984. Originally it covered only the TRS-80 model 1. Coverage of the Atari and Apple computers was added in August of 1980. Coverage for commodore and the PC was added at the very end of its life. Originally the magazine was half size but went to a full size magazine when Atari coverage was added.
The magazine was famous for its adventure game (around 50 were published including many for the Atari) and it also had a monthly column by Scott Adams in when Adventure International was still very young. The magazine went through a lot of changes. Starting in January 1983 the magazine was split into two: One was the main magazine and the other simple code listing for the specific computer of the subscriber (or the main program for every computer for the newsstand copy). The numbering scheme is also bizarre with column numbers being used for the first 44 issues and then a numbering scheme starting with issue 45 (though they started the number at #30). This numbering scheme has made it difficult to collect artifacts for this magazine!
I’ve put up one of the issues here (60 megs – be patient): SoftSide 55 PDF
So here is what is done so far:
The first 62 issues are scanned (Oct 1978 through Feb 1984). I do not know how many more issues there are though I know it died sometime in 1984 and that there is a march 1984 (vol . 7-03, issue #48) so I am missing at least one issue.
I’ve also been trying to get the programs listed in the magazine. I have a lot but there are a lot missing. The spreadsheet shows three colors: Green means it came off a disk, blue means I pulled it from a cassette. Red means it is missing. This is true for the programs only. The red on the magazine listings simply mean that I did not do the scan (I swapped a bunch of scans with Ira over at trs-80.com to fill in some missing gaps).
What I am looking for (read: my plea for help):
The separate “code” additions for the Atari are all collected with the exception of 1983-09 (#43, vol 6-11).
And of course anyone with SoftSide disks/tapes that show anything missing:
And of course any SoftSide disks/tapes that show anything missing on the list (excel spreadsheet): SoftSide_Magazines.zip
If you have any SoftSide materials not in the spreadsheet please get int touch! I'm mostly looking for the Atari Materials but I'm also tracking for the other machines...
I’ve had a lot of help from Allan on here getting SoftSide magazine materials. He sacrificed quite a few of his own magazines to help get this together so a special thanks to him.
I’d like to do something similar with the SoftSides that were done with the Antic/Analogs: create a nice disk set (these will fit on 1 DVD as I am processing them files differently than the Antic/Analog which shrinks the pages by about 30%).. Torrents would then shortly follow.
Thanks for reading.

Great... thanks. I'll archive it when I receive it. It's another BASIC game looks like. Were your tapes in good condition, any trouble loading or worked on the first try?Charlie
Hey.. The other two Aim software games arrived yesterday.. I plopped in one of them and it copied perfect the first time, no fluctuations at all... "Planet patrol" - wow its as bad as the last one!
-
I just bought this game thinking it might need archiving.. Oddly enough here is a thread about the same company.. so how about it, has this game been archived already?http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=150363078837
Charlie
Ah! You are the bastard that outbid me! That game has not been archived...
There were actually three from this company that went yesterday that have not been archived (at least they are not on atarimania)... I was able to get the other two:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=150363075014
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=150363076494
I was hoping whoever got the third one would archive it.... Now you're on the hook

-
Now in the Atarimania database, many thanks for archiving this program! Are you planning the addition of the SoftSide subscription tapes to the set? They'd be great to have in their original form! I believe I have some magazine disks somewhere as well...
Would also love to see cassettes / disks of the Adventure of the Month games but they're impossible to find. At least I believe all the adventures have been preserved and are available in a number of PD collections.

Excellent! Great to be a donor to the database

I had not planned on adding the SoftSide CAS files to the PDF scans.. Since they were all in BASIC I was just getting them to load and then saving them to an ATR for each issue (for issues where I could not locate a monthly disk). I'll add a directory off of the Atari Programs directory for cassette images for anyone that is crazy enough to want them
I was planning on doing a post next week on the SoftSide scans as far as progress and pleas for items that are missing.. Quick plea on the scans side: Every magazine from Vol 1-1 to Vol 7-2 (Feb 1984) is scanned. I know there is a Mar 1984 issue (I won the eBay auction for it then the guy flaked on me) and I know that the magazine ended sometime in 1984 so there can't be too many more.. If anyone has issues after Feb 1984 please get in touch! Anyway I plan on a more detailed post on it in the near future...As far as the adventures of the month club tapes.. I think I have a few at best (the box that had all the original SoftSide I bought had a bunch of cassettes I have not gone through yet, they are still in storage). It would be great if some of these turned up...

Atari Force Comics - all 21 Issues in PDF available
in Classic Console Discussion
Posted
Proving yet again that I have too much time on my hands.. "Atari Force" is a set of comics following a single story arc that was set at a later date than the five smaller Atari force issues that were included with various 2600 games. Now instead of forking over the immense sum of five or six dollars to get the complete set on eBay lucky you can download this treasure via torrent!
Atari Force Torrent
This is a much smaller PDF set than the others I've done (just under 600 megs and 750+ pages) but comic books are truly an amazing pain! Each page had to be photoshoped by hand and handled differently to get rid of all the dirt and filth that cheap comic book paper seems to gather (plus they are bad quality to begin with)... No doubt I've over done some pages and missed items on others..
Here is a sample page
