  1.

    Bryan Talbot, APX Cartoonist
Bryan Talbot published one program for the Atari computer: Cartoonist, which was published by Atari Program Exchange. It first appeared in the fall 1983 APX catalog, where it was awarded first prize in the systems/telecommunications category.
This interview took place on December 8, 2017.

"I was just trying to contemplate what to do, and finally — I'd been going to all the missionary classes and I did the thing that they taught us to do. I just knelt down on the floor and I grabbed my 810 drive, and I prayed that God would fix my drive."

Great interview. Very interesting guy and story. You didn't even need to ask any questions, he was that good, lol.

  2. Ive never really played this version much. I never had a coupler before and it sucks without it. Also the gameplay is fairly choppy. You get used to it though. It does have very addictive gameplay. Makes me want to play the 7800 version and buy a coupler for that.

Sorry for spamming this thread but I keep getting higher scores. Ill hold off posting unless someone does better or I think the score is postworthy.

  3. .

Another one that can bite you is the one inside the switchbox of 4-port models.

I actually had one IC literally explode in the RF box in the mid 90s. Too bad I didn't know how to fix anything back then. I think I gave it to my dad's friend and he fixed the switchbox.

  4. I'll add that to my shopping list. By the time I'm done this "free" 5200 will have nickel and dime me to death.

Should have seen the C64 I just fixed. It was enraging me. I desoldered tons of the ICs and bought replacement chips before I finally found the right one. This $3.99 goodwill C64 wound up costing me quite a bit after I fixed it. But then when I was about to throw in the towel after messing up some traces I looked on ebay and saw how high the c64s are going for and went back to it and finally fixed it.

Another thing to consider is that 5200s aren't cheap to ship. Lucky you got a free one.

  5. Do you have the same issue with a regular controller with it being jittery on the 5200?

If not then I would think the problem isn't in the 5200 as far as it taking the input, but still may be problem with the 5200 as far as sending power to the chips in the trackball unit. Can you check and verify voltage? Check from pin 1(gnd) and pin 2(+5V) of J2 for 5V. The schematic is here http://www.atarihq.com/danb/images/52TB_PCB1_schem.pdf found here http://www.atarihq.com/danb/52trakball.shtml with other useful info.

That is the first thing I would check. To me if it works in the 4 port you would think the trackball is okay but if with regular controllers the analog sticks work fine on the 2 port but the trackball doesn't the only thing I could think of would be a power issue going to the trackball not enough voltage for the chips or something.

    EDIT:

Almost forgot make sure to check it while J2 is plugged in as well.

Yeah normal controllers work fine, that’s what’s so odd. Didn’t notice anything odd until using the trak ball

  6. I think I damaged the motherboard with repeated clumsy soldering and D soldering to fix the fact that I really didnt know what I was doing when I first wired it up.

I tried doing some continuity testing and it seems to be fine, I thought maybe I broke the capacitor you install but I replaced it and it still doesnt work.

I put enough time in it that I have decided to cut my losses and it would probably be more efficient to just order or try to track down another system rather than try and get this one working. I will call it a surprisingly inexpensive learning opportunity, since the system was given to me for free.

I now have the dubious distinction of owning three working 5200 controllers, and no system to go with it.

Might be a good idea to hang on to the mobo or at least keep the IC's.

I think Best Electronics sells 5200 boards.

  7. And I somehow made my 5200 stop powering up when I had to desolder and resolver the cables to install the jack properly. Spent three hours trying to fix it and nada. Oh well.

    That sucks.

Do you have a multimeter? Do you have a short maybe? Pics?

  8. I finished my mod and left the RF cable on. It works fine. I didn't see a benefit to desoldering it.

I used the wrong value ceramic cap, I grabbed the wrong one on my desk with a bigger one. I discovered this after I was finished and tested it and it works so I'm leaving it as is.
