The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
SRGilbert replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Wow, even non-working I think I would have nabbed that for only $336. Was there something really nasty about it that we can't see? Where is this? Also, maybe it's just the lighting, but the joystick looks black in the pic, instead of the transparent blue. -
If only it had a SegaCD drive too....

Smartphones Vs. Dedicated Handheld Systems!
SRGilbert replied to fdurso224's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've found that the smartphone (iPhone in my case) is great for games like Scrabble. I also admit that's I've played my fair share of the Angry Birds. I like the fact that I can do so much with one device, just about anywhere. If I get bored of a game, I can check my email. When I'm done with that, I can hop on to Craigslist (and even post a listing) or check out Atariage or Facebook. Heck, I can even make a phone call! -
I'm thinking Donkey Kong is the easy winner with most available versions. Let's see if I can name them all.... 2600 7800 8bit Colecovision TI99 NES Gameboy Coleco Table top I'm sure there are more.

How much space do you have between the shelves? I have the same setup with a Model 2, and from the bottom shelf to the top you'll need at least 9" for standard carts, 11" for Sonic and Knuckles with another cart plugged in, or at least 12" for a Game Genie with a standard cart. That's right, with the Genesis, Model 2 CD AND the 32x, you need a shelf with a FULL FOOT of clearance to use the Game Genie! And that's with a standard cart, not even an EA Sports cart!

So the Genesis controller is okay for all the commands and controls? If so it looks like I have a winner. My only beef with the password solution is they are not "granular" enough for me. See, back in the day I got as far as Level 2 where there are half a dozen terminals with jobs for me to perform. One of the final jobs is really hard and I never got past it. The task where you have to get to the reactor before the timer runs out and there's a lot of jumping and platforming. Anyway, I usually load Level 3 by using a password which takes me past that part of the game and on with the adventure, but I feel bad because it means I never really finished that section. It would have been nice if there was a password to get me directly to that specific job from the terminal and more passwords to get to various other places in the game, not big chapter leaps. Anyway, I'll look for the Genesis version. And sorry Arkhan but I don't have room in my cabinet for a Sega CD, alas. You can mod an original xbox and install Neogenesis. It will play Sega-CD game straight from the original CDs. Plus, I think you can use actual on the fly save states that way, right?

Just to be clear, I wasn't ragging on the guy who owns this setup. I guess I'm ragging on the people who assume this must be the end all, be all of gaming. Like I said, it's a nice set up, and he should be proud, but I'll bet we have dozens if not hundreds of AA members who would give it a run for the money. In retrospect, I'm guessing the redundancy may have more to do with temporarily filling spaces than anything else.

Deus Ex only at 53? Don't tell Al.......

Maybe that Sears had a stock issue at the time and had to sell regular ones to fill orders?

Gee, sorry if I hurt their feelings with all my "criticism." The point I was making is against the people I know who aren't in the hobby and think this is a really big deal. When they give me the "I bet you'd love this!" I'm thinking "actually I have about 80% of that and a lot more." Granted, I'm sure we aren't seeing everything here either. Still, I stand by my CRT comment. Anything without native component output should not be on a widescreen HDTV, and anything with lightgun support CAN'T be played on anything but a CRT. No House of the Dead 2 for Dreamcast? No Duck Hunt for any of those NES he has? Sad......... I said it was decent, and we probably aren't seeing everything anyway.

Ok, who's setup is this? People I know keep showing me this pic, "I bet you'd love to have this....ha ha....." Sure it's a decent collection, but not nearly enough classic stuff for my tastes. Plus, he has a lot of duplication, and is missing several of what I'd think were obvious must haves. Personally, I can't imagine a setup with so many light gun capable systems hooked up to an LCD/Plasma.

Valuation of collections / insurance

Besides, who doesn't keep a list of the games they have? If you have that much, how can you even be sure what you have? The harder part would be putting a value on it. -

That too. I've never tried it. I was going to once, but then I decided to switch to flatwounds instead. ...which are even more expensive >_< Yeah, you are better off just wiping your strings down after a gig, but who thinks about that at 2:30 in the morning? -

I personally swear by Deoxit products, and they aren't that expensive if you shop around. Try MCM Electronics, you can usually find coupons online. I use this for general contact cleaning. I squirt some into a shot glass and the use a q-tip to scrub cart contacts. Then, I use a lint free swab like this: The head of these swabs is very flat, and works great for getting in between the contacts or apply to cart edge connectors. To apply a couple of drops of this to the contact: With the needle applicator, a little bottle of this will last years. -

Because they are cheap asses? JK, I used to do that myself back when I was poor and gigging regularly. You get a little more life out of them at least. -
Let us know what you're into and we can toss out some good recommendations. I like driving/racing games in general Demolition Racer: No Exit, my favorite DC game ever. Also, Hydro Thunder is awesome!
-
I don't care for the fact that you can unscrew them. I guess I could glue them, but I'm not a huge fan of the whole CX design anyway, iconic as it it.

A better question is, why would you? I'm assuming you have one working and one non-working DC, why not just use the working one?

Some nice finds this weekend, surprising since they were all at an antique store. Complete Atari 2600 Light sixer set, 17 fairly common games all with manuals, great condition Video game center (one I hadn't seen before too.) The real treat of the set was the Kid Controller as well as the two Sesame Street Games with the overlays and manuals! The tag on it said it didn't work (it does, works great actually) and I got the lot for $25! Cool little N64 Diddy Kong Racing tin box for $4.50, kinda high, but I'd never seen it before and I love the game. Nintendo Donkey Kong II Game and Watch. Fantastic condition, battery cover intact and no corrosion, also $25. I also was in Kohls this weekend and saw they have those iCade iPad joysticks on clearance for $41.99, but I also had a 30% coupon, so I grabbed it for only $29.39! -
My styrofoam head arrived today

I didn't know you could get head through the mail.....interesting. -
I tried that, it did not work. It didn't even come close to working. I bought a set of game bits off eBay and they've practically paid for themselves. It absolutely works, you just need the right kind of pen. The one that works best are the clear hard plastic pens that have the little plug in the end. I did it with my very first SNES repair. That said, it's a pain in the butt, and the gamebits are really the best way to go.

I loved those catalogs. I was already excited about getting them by the end of August every year. It was the only good thing about summer ending! I grew up in a pretty small town, and those catalogs were the only way to see a lot of that stuff. I loved the toys, I loved the electronics, the guitars, everything!

good find on the He - man toys... i have a bunch of them still in the box Well, I went to check on the "Atari" today and it turned out to be ... a Colecovision!!! So, for $20 I got the system, both controllers, power supply, the 2600 adapter and a few 2600 games but I also got Cosmic Avenger, Donkey Kong, Frogger II Threedeep and Star Wars Arcade all for the Colecovision. Took it home, plugged it in and in less than a minute I was playing my new Colecovision - no problems. One controller doesn't work perfectly but the other one functions awesome! Nice
