The Official "Thrift finds" Thread
SRGilbert replied to Happy_Dude's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Okay, today I have to eat my words. Stopped at a local pawn shop which usually has at least something worth looking at, and today I think I did pretty good on some stuff I'd actually been looking for. Just got my first SNES the other day and was surprised at how hard it is to find games for a decent price. Today I picked up Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, a "Not for Resale Demo Only" copy of Ken Griffey Jr Winning Run, and Super Off-Road, all for $10! -
Funny you should say that. I just spent the last hour or so cleaning up a SNES I won on feeBay. I'm usually pretty forgiving with older items like this, but this may be pushing it. I guess I need to put the blame on myself, after all the listing didn't mention anything other that the fact that it works, which it seem to fine. Knowing that I didn't have much in the way of recourse, I went ahead and spent over an hour cleaning it out. It wasn't until I opened the case that I discovered how bad it really was. In case you are curious, it looked like there had been at least two different types of soda spilled inside, a couple of dead bugs, some pieces of green hard candy, and several large slivers of WOOD (how those got in there, I can't fathom.) The fact that this still works is nothing short of a miracle. Fortunatly, I have been able to remove most of the offending substances, now I have to work on the controllers which will probably take me another hour at least. To be honest I don't think I would have bought this for half the price if I found it in person and had inspected it. Oh well, what can you do right?

I hate this thread, I could drive all over town, 7 days a week and not find ANYTHING like some of the stuff I read in here. -
Dedicated classic Nintendo sites?
SRGilbert replied to SRGilbert's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yeah, I'm finding that out. Today, I can't complain too much though. While passing through a smaller town I found not one, but TWO used game shops that had TONS of carts for pretty much all systems. As you said, I picked up some (fairly common) Sega Genesis games (Mortal Combat and Ecco), complete in boxes (even with warranty cards!) for $5 each, while the loose SNES games were $8 and up (got Super Empire Strikes Back.) The one store didn't have ANY Mario games for the SNES, and the other had everything but All Stars was $32.50, and Mario World was $18.00. I guess I'll have to hit the streets and hope for some yard sale booty. -
Can anyone recommend a Nintendo site that might compare to Atariage, except with classic NES and SNES info? In particular one with a Marketplace forum like we have here. I'm getting my first SNES and need some games, but frankly I'm a little surprised at the prices the games are going for on feeBay. I'd figure that ones like Super Mario World and Donky Kong Country would be as dead common as Combat and Pacman, but it's hard to find them for less than $10 shipped. In fact, that goes for almost any non-sports SNES titles. At my local pawn shops, you can't even find SNES carts period that aren't old sports titles, and thrift stores are even worse. Maybe I just picked the wrong time to get into the SNES!

My local thrift stores never have anything, but today at the Salv I saw a small stack of Atari 2600 carts. Mostly commons, but among them I found an Imagic No Escape! and a Congo Bongo both for $1.20 each. I guess not bad for R4's. -
NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!Seriously, I was going to order one any day now.

Notice that he's holding the stick left handed, what's up with that?

I remember seeing that in the Christmas catalog (Sears probably?) when I was a kid. Even then, I was like "what the heck?"

Atari Patrolman Security Services Badge
SRGilbert replied to jaysmith2000's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Just out of curiosity (since it's WAY out of my price range already!) what was the purpose/history of this badge? -
Does anyone know if these are the SAME kits that Best sells (or MrRetroGamer for that matter)? If you believe thier website, Best seems to have gone through a lot of trouble to offer top notch parts and the reviews I've heard from AA members supports this. There is only ONE SOURCE for these particular parts and that is BEST ELECTRONICS. They have the tool and die equipment to manufacture these parts. That being said, it's my opinion that they prefer to not to deal with the small customers - they do have a minimum purchase amount AND charge Priority Shipping WITH required insurance, so infer from that what you will. I offer their parts for sale (and have done so for quite some time) for people who want a more personalized buying experience, who may need extra direction or support with their installation, or have additional questions. Plus, I work with all Atari Age members to give them the best price and best shopping experience possible! I used to sell refurb controllers but found that it was not cost effective. People would buy eBay 5200 consoles and complain when their rebuilt controllers did not respond as they had expected. They did not understand that this is due to the way their particular 25 year old console would read the analog inputs from the joystick, and not because of the controller being out of adjustment. Here is my 2 cents worth, I personally feel that the only controller part you really need to have with the gold dots is the Start/Pause/Reset pad. Everything else is just overkill. Thanks for the info MrR, I didn't know you had those too! What do you charge to ship those?

Actually I want to stick with analog! Redemption is no longer available from AA. Crap, when did that happen? I'm hoping to get around to buying one soon, anyone know if there are discontinued?

Looking for multi-input composite box for composite monitor
SRGilbert replied to Allan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
You might consider this one from RadioShack Auto-Sensing 4-Way Stereo A/V Selector & RF Modulator It only has 4 total inputs, but 2 of them accept RF and all of them can be output to RF as well. I had it for a while, but it didn't have quite enough inputs for me, plus I didn't really need the RF as only my 2600 uses it, and that is connected directly to the TV. There is a pdf manual HERE that has pics of the back. Nice unit for $29.99 and RadioShack is always great about returns. -
Well, I'm in Lansing, but not really in the market for one of these.

5200 Joystick Extension Cables for SALE!
SRGilbert replied to MrRetroGamer's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
He probably doesn't need it, but I thought I'd give Rich a big thumbs up for his customer service! I ordered and paid for a pair of cables on Thursday night, he sent them out Friday morning, and I got them on Monday! They are nice cables too, brand new, well made, and nice and flexable. Really, you can't go wrong, great deal! Thanks again! -
Just a bump and an edit to the first post. Thanks

How do I get in contact with OSG? I couldn't find a listing on this forum for anyone with that username, and I tryed Old School Gamer, as well. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be cheaper just to buy a modded Flashback 2. Couldn't play 7800 games on it, but that would be fine with me. If you just need a 2600 with AV attachments, you could buy the part from 8bitDomain www.8bitdomain.com That mod is completely solderless and looks incredibly easy compared to the 7800 mod. I was just hoping to avoid having to pay triple shipping to end up with a modded 7800 (1st ship to me, then to OSG, and then back to me again.) GAH!, you expect me to install this?!: http://www.8bitdomain.com/proddetail.php?prod=av7800 Way to many wires and parts. I don't see any online instructions either, which would be nice for people to see before purchasing one of these kits. Well, the 7800 mod might be a bit advanced if you've never used a soldering iron before. The instructions can be found HERE You'll find links to PDF step by step intructions for all the AV mods they sell (except the 5200 for some reason?) What I was refering to was the mod they offer for the 2600. I recommend that one because there is no soldering involved at all. You do have to pry out an IC chip, but that's not too hard. The hardest part is probably drilling the holes in the case for the jacks.

Best Multiplayer Genesis Games
SRGilbert replied to vdub_bobby's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Eternal Champions, classic fighter. Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine is great head to head competition, Columns is a great arcade port also. Of course sports games are usually good, especially any of the EA Hockey games. I like Side Pocket, terrific pool game. -
PCZone ranks DeusEx #1 PC game ever.
SRGilbert replied to crunchysuperman's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I was one of three programmers on the original game (Chris Norden, Scott Martin, and myself), and one of the original six team members that started Ion Storm Austin (having previously been the Austin branch of Looking Glass Technologies). We had a quite a bit of influence over the design of the game, and in fact I penned the entire third act of the game in the original design doc that we used to sell the game to Ion Storm / Eidos. Of course, most of that ended up getting reworked as it was too ambitious (you actually ended up traveling to a moon base in the original design doc). My responsibilities included: - Designed and programmed the game's entire user interface - Designed and programmed the conversation system (ConEdit) - Wrote a standalone conversation editor that Sheldon Pacotti used to script and write all the dialog for the game (and there is a TON of it, as anyone who has played the game knows!) - Programmed the Save/Load system - Implemented several other game systems - Wrote several of the easter eggs (such as the quotes screen and the hidden "legend" menu) - Tons of other more minor stuff It was a great project to work on, although fairly long. I would later go back to Ion to work on the PS2 version of Deus Ex, which required a great deal of work to squeeze the game into the PS2's memory footprint. The entire user-interface was redone from scratch (to support the PS2 controller instead of a keyboard/mouse combination), the renderer needed substantial changes to run at a decent framerate, and the save/load system had to be thrown out and redone (as saves on the PC are *huge* and that simply could not be done on the PS2). It was a pretty significant effort, much more so than most "ports". After the US version went gold, I then worked on all the localization for German, French, Spanish and Italian versions. That ended up being a lot of work as well given how extensive the user-interface was, to say nothing of the thousands of lines of in-game dialog. For the record, I had *NOTHING* to do with the sequel, Invisible War. In fact, all three of the original programmers ultimately left after Deus Ex shipped, for various and sundry reasons. ..Al All I can say is WOW, DeusEx is without a doubt the most amazing PC games ever. -
Thanks for the input guys, I really do appreciate it. So far the only offers I've gotten were a 3DO system and a Sega Saturn, both of which didn't bother to write back to tell me how much they were asking for them. Oh, and today I got this one. Now I"m not trying to make fun of anyone, and maybe there is something here I'm not seeing but......he sent me this link to his CR listing. Now, maybe he's not telling us that everything is CIB mint condition, I don't know.

5200 Joystick Extension Cables for SALE!
SRGilbert replied to MrRetroGamer's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
No packaging to speak of, just the bare cable with a twist-tie around it. They were in blister packs labeled as generic 15 pin extensions, but they took up so much room like that I chucked all the packages. The connectors look 100% identical to the 5200 controller connector just without the Atari logo on it. Probably from late 80's to early 90's from what I remember. I'd like a pair too!
