Why should I continue my Atari hobby?
Mr.Amiga500 replied to Marius's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Ha! Yeah, I tried that line of reasoning with my wife. I said, "...but I could easily get double what I paid for these computers." She said, "the problem is you would never ever sell them." I have to admit she's right. I also like to show original prices of the computers when convincing my wife it's a good deal. I say, "but look how much it originally cost!" (showing her a 1983 Byte Magazine advertisement) "I'd be paying less than one twentieth that price!" And when I bring a really ugly free 80's computer home, I say, "but this cost over $4000 when it was new - and I got it FREE!" (...doesn't work with Atari though because original price was too damn low to use this trick) -
Another method is to bang away at the keyboard with some dummy text loaded up. Virtually every possible key combination has a function attached to it. The first three help files describe most of the commands. When I looked quickly at your post, I thought you said, "get a dummy to bang away at the keyboard". (...picturing a crash-test dummy designed just to test programs... or a Frankenstein-type guy grunting and banging the keyboard... like a few co-workers I used to know ) Yes, I've read the help files. I've just been too lazy to try them all.

Yes, I just discovered this myself and was about to edit my post. Wow, I'm discovering new features with this icon bar. (when you're too lazy to test features that use key sequences... like I am... icons help )

I tried repeatedly, but can't reproduce it. Maybe it was just a one-time thing - corrupted memory or something. Unrelated - I noticed that when going to print preview, the colour switches briefly to the default grey text with black background before going back to my set colours to display the print preview. Is this necessary? You probably never noticed this if you always use the default palette. It's not a big deal or anything - I'm just wondering why. What does the magnifying glass do? It appears to be "find" (Find: prompt), but actually doesn't find anything. The search and replace works beautifully though.

Just fired it up and <CTRL+K> to change colours and <P> to advance border text luma and <CTRL+P> to reverse it (and <B> to advance border colour and <CTRL+B> to decrease it) seems to work fine. What you've probably discovered is that print preview takes on the border colour and luma now. This was done months ago because no-one could agree what was the best background colour for the print preview screen. I'm open to suggestions if this isn't suitable. Ah, yes. Now I've got it. On the last version, "P" didn't do anything so I thought "Prompt" meant cursor or something. Now it works nicely. Thanks! The print preview screen looks great too. The icon bar is lovely. I found a bug though. I loaded a document, brought up the icon bar, selected the print preview icon and nothing happened. Then the text bar overwrote the bottom of the icon bar. It stayed like this until I brought up the icon bar again and this time print preview worked properly and the text bar looked normal again. I'll take a picture if I can reproduce it.

I see the border text colour behaviour has changed... now how do I set it independently of the border background colour? I had my colour scheme perfected and now I can't get it back. D'oh!

HSC7 Bonus Round April 2010
Mr.Amiga500 replied to therealbountybob's topic in 8-bit High Score Club
How could anyone not like Briky You should have seen some of the ones I didn't pick Is Briky one of yours? Sorry, but I didn't like Briky. His smiling face made me want to punch the TV. No, I'm exaggerating. That's actually the only game I played more than once. (probably because it was the first ) I think I found a bug because "Briky" (...if that is his real name...) ended up stuck in a side wall, but didn't die. (bastard just sat there, smiling at me) -

I'll start the Zone Ranger scores - 7836. This game really raises the blood pressure - time limits, tricky targets, endless enemy harassment. (...just like real life) -
HSC7 Bonus Round April 2010
Mr.Amiga500 replied to therealbountybob's topic in 8-bit High Score Club
I just played all these games... but I never want to play them again. If these are the "Best of BASIC", I'd hate to see the worst. I suppose Gwobby and Escape are OK, but there must be better BASIC games out there. -
HSC Season 7 Game 6: Beef Drop
Mr.Amiga500 replied to therealbountybob's topic in 8-bit High Score Club
Are you talking about taking a bite out of an animal, then letting it go on its merry way? I didn't consider that either. Actually, I don't eat mammals. I don't walk on mammals either... except an unfortunate accident when I stepped on a sheep. To be fair, though, he stepped on me far more often than I ever stepped on him. (thankfully, he never landed on a hamburger bun) -

Yes, this is fine, unless the chef likes to lick his shoes at the end of the day , then he's placed in a tricky dilemma Yes... yes, of course... I hadn't considered that. (for some strange reason...) -

What?? You're extending the deadline? I'm trying to hold on to my third place finish! If somebody knocks me out of third, you can expect a visit from my lawyer. (I'll be suing for damages due to "gaming related pain and suffering") If you're looking for more games to play, I'd like to suggest "Montezuma's Revenge" (fixed 16K). I've looped the counter on that one. I wish there was some way to have an online Ballblazer competition. That would be neat. The chef doesn't eat the burgers. He just walks on them. As far as I know, vegetarians are allowed to walk on meat. (...as long as they wear shoes) -
Why should I continue my Atari hobby?
Mr.Amiga500 replied to Marius's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I agree with that. Even when I don't feel like turning on my Ataris (or other old computers), I still like to look at them. Occasionally, I just press the keys and try to remember the feeling of mystery that computers had back in the late 70's/early 80's. That makes me happy. Why would I want to get rid of something that makes me happy? Who cares that it's obsolete and doesn't do anything very useful. Making me happy is its main function. -

Since you don't have a screenshot for proof, I'll assume your "123,350" is just an April Fools joke. Actually, I got 557,500 but for some reason the first 5 doesn't show up on camera. -
Nooooo!! I've got enough drop down menus in my life.... so many that I think I'm getting psychologically damaged. When I go to a restaurant, I half expect the menu to have a little drop down menu for each item. I like the icon bar best. (yes, I've been psychologically damaged by icons too... but they remind me of Lucky Charms breakfast cereal when I was a kid )

HSC Season 7 Game 6: Beef Drop

57500 The damn egg got me when I was on the very last segment of the last piece of bun to complete the level. I don't think I'll make any more attempts. This game annoys the hell out of me. I much prefer the Apple II version of BurgerTime. (the only good Apple II game I know of) -
Nice pictures. (...but they remind me of how much I hate sodium vapour lamps and their orange glow. You just can't see real night these days.) I took some similar pictures to show light pollution. On one, I moved the camera accidentally before the shutter closed and the light streaks ended up looking like missiles fired into the city.

Damn! It seems folders don't follow the same rule. I wanted my DEMOS folder as first entry (only have to press one key to view them), so I wiped the SD and created the folder. I copied all the demos to that folder, then each game/program in the order I want. When I checked the SD on the Atari, the DEMOS folder was third entry, not first! Changing the name to DEMO put it halfway down the second page for some unknown reason. I also wanted certain programs at the top of pages for easy access (press right arrow once to highlight first entry on second page.. and so on). I noticed after copying that I forgot one - and this shifted all my entries up by one, screwing my whole plan. Oh well.

Hi. Yes, there is FAT file's ordering trouble as you wrote. SDrive hw can't sorts filenames because it hasn't memory for doing it. Atari SDrive control software could, but it would be very very slow because of reading whole directories (!) every time, no only 1 page (20 filenames). But there is one helpful function Control+F for searching (or Shift+characters). Please read the SDrive manual. Greetings, raster/c.p.u. I'm not blaming the SDrive, which I think is incredibly amazing. I know it is because of the FAT filesystem. I wasn't expecting SDrive control software to do ordering. I was just looking for a convenient method of setting files to be in a certain order when copying to the SD. Since it seems to be ordered by the order in which files are originally copied (and later fills up available space left by deleted files, in order), it appears that I have no choice but to wipe the SD and manually copy when I want the correct order. This is a bit of a pain in the ass, though, because any OS I copy from orders by either name or date - so I have to scan the entire folder and pick out files in the order I want them. (an eye-numbing procedure when you have a large list) Maybe I'll just write a program that allows you to drag & drop the order, then copies to the SD in that order, saving the list in a text file for later use. (this program would also be useful for copying to MP3 players that play in copy order)

Thanks for the link, but there are two problems with that program. 1. It requires Windows, which I don't use. 2. The only thing that would be useful to me is the "playlist mode" (manual ordering), which only works for long filenames because it replaces the short filename with a number. SDrive displays short filenames, so I would see just a list of numbers. (useless) What does everybody else do about this problem? Do people just dump files onto the SD and not care about the order? I like to order them - putting the best games at the top of the list for easier access and the less useful stuff way down the list. Well, it looks like I'll just have to wipe the SD and manually copy each file in order... again.
