  1. The Atari 8-bit was the best home computer of its era. The ST was not.

When I first heard about the ST in 1986, I wasn't impressed at all. I tried to like it, thinking it was supposed to be the next generation Atari - but it just bored me somehow. The Amiga, however, blew me away. It was the same feeling I got years earlier with the 800XL and 2600.

Even now, the ST is one of the few popular 80's computers I don't own and have no desire to get.

  2. Who wouldn't be bored with 2009? What a boring year. I suggest we scrap the whole thing and start a new year. We can call it "2010". What do you think? Anybody with me?

Although... apparently, 2010 will be "the year we make contact". I think a guy who looks remarkably like Roy Scheider will be sent on an expedition to Jupiter with a group of annoying Soviets. There will be a bunch of monoliths and Apple IIc portables will be all the rage. That's my prediction anyway.

  3. Kinda interesting to emulate even older machines on our old machines :)

I agree with that. I once used an Amiga 500 to emulate MS-DOS to run a DOS Atari 800 emulator. Now I can emulate a PET inside that Atari emulator and "quad-emulate" on my Amiga. (...or is that "tri-emulate"? I've lost count. ;)) No, now that I've got a real Atari, I'll just run it on that.... until I get a real PET.

Thanks for the emulator, perry_m. The screenshots look great. Is there a way to make the PET emulator green on black? To me, a PET isn't a PET unless it's green-screen.

  4. Nice label! I'd buy a cart for sure if I didn't already have my SDrive. I'm trying to get away from using carts now. Plugging and unplugging them is causing wear on my 800XL. (sometimes I have to pull up on the motherboard to turn on)

I know it makes sense to put joystick as default, but I was hoping for another version with trackball as default - for people who don't like to press Control-T every time (and it should be an easy change). Oh well. One can dream. ;)

  5. Thanks for the great feedback... makes it worthwhile. :)

[Thanks. That's exactly what I'm looking for. It's much more readable. Now... how do I save the settings?

Shift+Ctrl+Q, and type LW <Return> to make it the default configuration.

Yes, I figured that out right after I posted. I got off my ass... well, on my ass, actually.. and read through your impressive PDF manual.

Thanks very much for this program! :)

  6.

    1. control+k to change text, background, Prompt, and Border. Control+K opens a dialogue to make changes.

    2. Control+shift+< 'clr' will hide the eol character.

I have been using dark text, light background & Border, and dark Prompt.

Thanks. That's exactly what I'm looking for. It's much more readable. Now... how do I save the settings?

Edit: Never mind. I didn't realise that an amazingly huge PDF document came with the program. I should probably read the thing. (wow... I'm even lazier than I thought)

  7. The Last Word 3.1 is now available at atari8.co.uk.

    This version includes:

    • Revised screen update which is up to twice as fast as LW 3.0.
    • Batch renaming of tagged files on the disk menu.
    • Fully debugged macro processor which actually works now!
    • 20 sample macros.
    • Sample config and SYS files.
    • 4 sample extension programs.
    • A selection of printer drivers.
    • Lots of other bug fixes and improvements.

I'd like to see if there are any problems with this version before writing any major extensions such as spell-checkers, etc, because changing the equates in the add-ins after recompiling the main program is a real pain.

    In the meantime, enjoy! icon_mrgreen.gif

Direct download link. Can webmasters please update their links, since version 3.1 supercedes 3.0 (which should be abandoned). It's always best to link to the main atari8.co.uk site in case download links or the site structure alters (rather than using the direct URL as a permanent link).

Wow, this is great! Thanks very much. It's amazing seeing great new software for a 30-year-old computer.

I've got a couple questions. (sorry if this is already answered in the help files or manual... I can't find it and I'm a bit too lazy to search right now ;))

    1. Is it possible to change the colour scheme? 80-column text on a 1084 monitor is a bit hard to read. Maybe other colours would help.

    2. Is it possible to get rid of the carriage return symbol when editing? (I've never been too fond of carriage return symbols.)

  8. It seems to be working (at first I didn't notice I had to press Control-T), but the spider has a bit of graphical corruption for some reason.

If you could solve that problem and make it trackball mode by default, it would be great. Thanks.

What do you think of the player speed? Too fast? Too slow? Just right? The way it's setup right now, you can really zip across the screen when the ball is spun.

I think the speed is just right. Wow, what a major difference in accuracy - compared to joystick mode. I think my CX-80 has a bit of an alignment problem or something (even though it's brand new) because it's jerky as hell when moving slowly in joystick mode. I had to spin the ball like hell just to make it move smoothly. But in trackball mode, it's now very smooth and accurate. I almost feel like I went back in time 30 years and I'm playing on the arcade machine.

  9. This thread has reminded me how much I love vector graphics - those glowing, extremely crisp lines that could barely be reproduced by computers 25 years later. Effects in late 70's/early 80's movies using vector graphics totally blow away later effects using blocky raster graphics. I think vector graphics was abandoned too soon - before raster was at a high enough resolution.

(...but this is a bit off topic. Carry on.)

  10. This was a great game from 1893, little animations within the zepplin itself, a really fun simple game on A8

This was released in 1893? I remember 1893... back then we just had horses, carts and stuff. My favourite game as a kid was kicking a piece of horse shit down the street. If I only knew they had games like this! ;)

Can somebody let me know the winner of this Atari v Commodore thread when it's finished? I don't have time to read 400+ pages.

  11. This is a bit of a useless post... but I was just watching the movie "Airplane II" again and I was shocked to hear the sound of an Atari 8-bit loading!

You can hear it just after Ted Striker accidentally rips off the lever trying to slow down the ship. I'm pretty sure of it, but can anybody confirm? You can also hear a bit of it earlier in a scene on the moon base just before a military guy adjusts a screen to show William Shatner. I already knew about the Yar's Revenge sound effect, but this is the first time I noticed the drive sound.

"Where am I going to find an Atari 8-bit.... here... in space.... at this hour?"

  12. BLASPHEMY! I'm typing this on my 1987 Model M and I have to respectfully disagree, the Model M feels so much more responsive than an AT keyboard.

More "responsive"? How so? I've got a 1986 Model M (and 1991 one) and the 1984 AT keyboard has a clickier, more solid feel. The Model M feels a bit spongy in comparison and a little less precise. I don't notice a difference in response times (between pressing a key and seeing a letter) if that's what you mean.

I wish I could manufacture my own keyboards. I'd make a buckling spring Atari 800XL and a black buckling spring Amiga 500.

  13. I figure this would be cool from a nostalgia standpoint, blow people's minds at work if they saw you using an Atari computer like a small 600XL to be the keyboard for your PC. Also for those who want the ultimate in emulation experience on your PC, what better way then to use a real Atari keyboard.

I was obsessed with this idea for a while and would have definitely been interested - until I started using my Ataris a bit more recently and realised that the keyboards aren't really that great. They're too stiff (both 800XL and 1200XL). I'd be more interested in getting an interface for a Kaypro keyboard. Now that's a keyboard with nice thick shiny black keys and a good feel. The keyboard of the TRS-80 Model III is surprisingly nice too (but it's attached so forget that one). I'm typing this on a 1984 IBM AT keyboard which really has the best "feel" of any keyboard (better than the Model M), but just doesn't have those nice thick sculpted black plastic keys of the Kaypro or Model III. Maybe I'll leave my AT keyboard beside the Model III and see if they mate and have children. ;)

I don't know why people these days tolerate cheap crap keyboards with flat keys made out of dull flimsy plastic. The keyboard is the part of the computer you touch the most. It should feel like it has some quality.

  14. I guess I won't be enjoying the "old-style wait-forever floppy loading experience". I tried copying from SDrive to 1050, but no matter what I do I get "FORMATTING ERROR". I tried about 15 different disks. My 1050 is probably screwed up. Oh well, good thing I've got the SDrive.

  15. Not sure that I explained my question properly, but the answer is yes you can copy disc images from the sdrive to a real disc.

I used mycopier loaded from sdrive, loaded up the image to be copied in D2 on the sdrive, set 1050 as drive 2. Loaded up my copier, swaped to D2 on the SDrive, hit start and off we went ;)

Uh... anybody know where I can get mycopier to do this? I've read that it's in APE_WARP.ATR, but the ones I've found don't contain mycopier.
