Is the PAL version slower than NTSC? I don't want to lose because the PAL players (wankers) are fighting robots that are moving slower than three-toed sloths stuck in molasses. Chicken. Fight like a... NTSC robot!
By the way, there's a bug in the game. If Otto is chasing you and you move into the left doorway - without exiting - he will think you're on the other side and go bouncing to the right. I once spent 10 minutes just psyching out Otto. (the bastard deserved it)

Loooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee RAIDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chicken. Fight like a ... robot.
Only one lone vote for the Lone Raider. How appropriate.
I better start practising my robot-like fighting techniques.
The humanoid must not escape!

Yes, that would be the ultimate for sure. I've got a Trak-ball, but only ever use it for Centipede. It would be great to get more use out of the Trak-ball and a useable GUI would be perfect. It should work on Joystick 2 port, keeping joystick on Joystick 1 port - just like on Amiga. (where I also use a trackball)
We had already covered this ground, over a month ago.
I must have missed a page. That's the problem with a 21-page thread.

Seriously though, using the trak-ball would be great!

I think there's risk of starting a side conversation about not getting into the side conversation.

To get back on subject, I think this GUI thing is kick-ass awesome!

Go... Aquatron! (picturing Ralph Wiggum saying, "Go banana.")
If Aquatron doesn't win and Berzerk needs one vote to win, I want to transfer my vote to Berzerk.
(...just like I do for municipal elections)

Mine isn't too rare.
Is that a doom cartridge????
Yeah... that one's pretty rare.

Personally, I prefer the 800XL. I had a 600XL once but found the keyboard considerably less comfortable and responsive than the 800XL. Whether or not it was a one off I couldn't say, but just my personal experience, but it made programming and word processing a pain. Also, I prefer the 800XL aesthetics wise, the very short back of the 600 is great if your tight on space, but gives it an "unbalanced" look in my eyes, and the smaller form factor seems a minor benefit for having less memory and no monitor output as standard. The 800XL has a decent amount of RAM as standard, which will play most games and run most of the original "serious" software too, through a composite output to boot. One last thing is that the bigger case also means it's easier to fit any further upgrades. It's big enough to get a 2.5" drive inside, if you want to go for mass storage.
I prefer the appearance of the 800XL too. The 600XL looks a bit stunted. As for the keyboard comfort difference, there were at least 5 different versions of the 800XL keyboard. The 800XL you used probably had the good "type 1" keyboard, while the 600XL had a crappier version.
I prefer the feel of the "type 1", but the keycaps feel a bit cheap. The "type 4" has thicker keycaps and is heavier (giving the 800XL a nicer, heavy, balanced feel), but can be a bit stiff to type on. Even among the types, there is variation. I've got one "type 4" that is smooth and doesn't jam, and another that constantly jams.

Tada! This is how Altirra displays it. It probably will look different on a real machine, certainly on PAL as I think I used the NTSC palette. I say think because I've given up trying to work out what the "proper" colours are! Anyone remember this show?
Awesome. I just dropped everything to rush over and put this on my 800XL. It's great, but needs some theme music and a voice sample saying, "We can rebuild him."
I used to have a Six Million Dollar Man lunch box. My sister had Wonder Woman. Thankfully, we never had mix-ups. A guy carrying a Wonder Woman lunch box would probably get the shit beat out of him after school.
If you're handling requests, can you next do Space 1999?

Looks like there was a mention in a vintage-computing thread as well: Vintage Computing Thread Link
No bueno! The good times are over!

Yeah, that was me. Sorry about that... but I did say you were a "nice generous guy", and I stand by my original assessment.

If I can get you to add "good looking" we will be all set

That might be a bit difficult. You look like a demented pink frilly thing - as if rags from an old style car wash went berserk and started happily eating people.
I don't know about you people in Boise, Idaho, but here in Canada we don't call that sort of thing "good looking".

Ach! Once again, I'm the only one voting for the only game in the list I feel like playing. I'm not having a merry Christmas, not merry at all. Bah humbug!
"You there! What day is this?"
"Why, it's Christmas day, sir... and we're playing Wizard of Wor."
"Damn you! Damn you to hell!" (shakes fist)

TEAMS?? It's bad enough having to be a "team player" to get a job these days. Why is everything "teams" now? I'm not a "team player". I refuse to be a "team player"! You know how The Road Warrior got killed?? He went from being a loner to joining a team of settlers. He would have been perfectly fine if he stayed "a shell of a man", roaming the desert in his V8 Interceptor with his mangy dog. Yeah, that's right. Teamwork killed him! There's no way I'm getting myself killed playing "Team Pole Position"!
Performance is still individual but there's team points and individual points as I understand it. So we'll let you do the hardest races as you are good at this game. Let me know if you are in and suggest some team name.
Obviously, a good team name would be "The Road Warriors"... but I'm not joining the team.

Thanks to the extreme generosity of davidcalgary29, this one is mine:

(I've had it for over a year now, actually. Thanks David!)
I've always loved the brown & cream colour scheme of the XL series. I think it's possible that the XL series was inspired - a bit, at least - by the DEC VT-100. I just bought a DEC VT-100 keyboard. See how similar it looks. (ignoring the unusual, non-standard colours)

I'm the only one voting for Pole Position? Damn it! Donkey Kong? Donkey Kong can kiss my ass.
I'd like to recommend Aquatron for a future competition.
(...and what the hell happened to my Ballblazer suggestion? You guys don't like blazing balls or something?)

I think it's a terrible idea, possibly the worst in the illustrious history of the High Score Club, why do you even bother posting here... nah
it's a cool game though I've only got a dodgy old copy of the BallBlaster? version. Does the one you have have opponents with different skill levels or was droid 2 just a second play? (why, you son of a...) No, Droid 2 is not just a second play. Theoretically, it's supposed to be a more difficult opponent (I think it's just the same player, but slightly less spastic). I've actually only played Droid 1 & 2 in Ballblazer, but in the Amiga version - MegaBlazer - each Droid is harder than the last, and Droid 7 is a real bastard to beat. I assume Droid 7 in the Atari version is equally... bastardidious.
p.s. by some miracle you are still in the top 10
That's no miracle. I'm there because of my incredible skill and impressive abilities. (...and because I wasted my valuable time playing that "Best of BASIC" crap)
-
I don't like any of these games. Someday, can we have a Ballblazer competition? We can start playing against the computer at Droid 1 and if you win, you go to Droid 2 - and so on. Time should be set at 3:00.
You take a screenshot, showing the final score at the highest level you got to. If multiple people win on the final level, place will be determined by the time that you won. (higher time gets higher place)
Of course, it's possible for cheaters (I'm looking at you, bountybob! just kidding
) to set the time above 3:00, but we'll just have to rely on honesty. (yeah, right)What do you think?

Before you suspect that I might be a total moron... yes, the switch on the SDrive is on read-write and the tab on the SD card is not on "Lock".
This is a 512Mb SD card (not SDHC) and I am able to write to it using any other computer (including Amiga). I first noticed this problem when I typed a long document using "The Last Word" and "saved" it. Later, I went to open the document and noticed (with much disgust) that it wasn't there. I then tried copying a file (using The Last Word) and the copy was successful. When I refreshed the directory, it was gone. I then tried deleting a file. It shows successfully deleted, but when refreshed, the file is back. (...just like a zombie - kill it and it keeps coming back)
I didn't have problems with a 2Gb SD card I was using before. (but that card is now used for something else - 2Gb was overkill for Atari)
Anybody have any ideas why this card is read-only on the SDrive?

Beware 8-bit owners.......EDIT:Whoops, wrong system, but same graphics.I love that.

I have a programmable keyboard encoder hardwired into the atari keyboard matrix. The encoder detects the keypresses and send appropriate ps2 codes to my pc. The advantage of this approach is that I can use all of the atari's keys-- even reset (which is used for ctl alt del.) The encoder can be programmed to match any key with any ps2 code. The downside is that the encoder messes with and is messed up by the atari mb. If someone were to come up with a software solution, I think that would be the way to go. With my setup, I ended up having to remove the two chips on the keyboard to make things work for my pc. Obviously, this renders the keyboard useless for the atari. I plan to experiment with some optocouplers to see if I can isolate the two circuits and have both live together. Google hagstrom electronics lp24 to see what I used.
Fascinating. What about some kind of terminal software on the PC that redirects terminal output? (to anywhere you want to type) That way you could connect any old computer to use as a PC keyboard.
I've connected many old computers (Kaypro, TRS-80) to my Amiga using terminal to type text which I then cut & pasted into posts. It would be much neater if I could just redirect that text to the browser's text box to type directly. I'm sure there's a way to easily do that sort of thing.

Thanks very much! I never thought I'd see Sinistar on the Atari - and it's not as bad as I expected. It's very playable and has some of the arcade feel. The only things that let it down are the jerky movement and the deaths - especially when Sinistar gets you. It isn't scary like the arcade version.
People who like Sinistar and have an Amiga should check out Xenostar. It's a very nice Sinistar clone that is surprisingly unknown.

You are probably right about that, but you need to quit taking such a defensive stance. I wasn't attacking you.. As I said before, I have plans to make serious use of this app, and I'd like to see it developed in the best possible manner to facilitate those who have similar interests.. If you like the icons, then by all means, use them.. All I said was make it modular so thatr I don't have to...
Well, you can see in the last three pages of this thread I keep going on about how I like the icons and I keep trying to convince him to keep them, then you come along and "piss on my parade" (...so to speak), saying to "leave the damn icons", calling it "crap" and "bloat" and implying I'm not a "serious power user". Your wording certainly seemed hostile to me.
In my oppinion, icons definitely have no useful purpose on this app, other than looking out of place and unprofessional..That's your opinion. In my opinion, they make it look more professional. I don't know why you'd think they look out of place when they're not even visible unless you press escape.
I try to use the Atari for real world tasks too. I also like to demonstrate to kids & people who have never seen an old computer before what the old computers could do. If I show them the wordprocessor and tell them to press escape for the icons, they'll be able to figure out the features without me having to tell them, "OK, now press Control + [whatever]+ [whatever else]". (kids give up quickly when they can't easily figure something out)
I can understand not wanting icons in a wordprocessor/editor. I use microgolded on the Amiga and I removed the default icon bar and have text only. The icon bar on The Last Word is different though, because it is hidden and doesn't require clicking with a mouse.
Anyway, even arguing about this seems pretty pathetic when you think about it. We're arguing about wordprocessor on a 30-year-old computer which was designed mainly to play games. Using the words "professional" and "power user" is a bit of a joke.
Icons.... no icons... I've decided I don't really care. Whatever.

HSC8 Round 5: Berzerk
in 8-bit High Score Club
Posted
My first attempt: 9040
I killed myself twice by carelessly walking into walls while going around corners. (Chicken. Walk like a.. robot.)
