Out of all the games in a certain Genre or category of game, which one would you consider the "Duke Nukem Forever" of that particular one? I use "Duke Nukem Forever" to describe a particular game that spent or is spending a really long time in development and was either canceled, is barely alive and nobody's doing anything with it, or IS being actively developed, but just taking a really long time to release a new binary (3+ years). Examples of what I would consider the DNF of something are Sonic Robo Blast 2, mentioned in an earlier topic (been in active development for almost nine years and still hasn't gotten beyond Sunflower Hill and Techno Hill zone), and Man Goes Down on the Atari 2600 (Cover art and manual were made and game was almost ready to ship, but maker got sick and the game has been on hold for nearly 2 years.). I even have a few fangames that I planned that I would consider DNFs, such as Sonic Tempo (me and my brother were planing it for years, but never got past the title screen development wise), a version of The Incredible Machine with parts and environments based on popular video games (had a lot planned, but never got around to making ANY of it) and, to a lesser extent, my latest project, Jumping Flash 4: The Rageful Revenge of Baron Aloha. This project has spent a year in planning now. I'm currently saving up for a Macbook so I can have a computer powerful enough to fulfill my ambitious resurrection of the heroic robotic lagimorph. I actually thought out the gameplay aspects, all the extras that were to go in it, finalized a soundtrack, sketched out lots of concept art, and actually did a lot of the in game voices on my trusty Macintosh LC. Now the only thing standing between me and actually making the game is $1099 for a shiny new Macbook. *sighs longingly*

Zaku finally gets released. The creator of Man Goes Down finally recovers, but decides not to finish it. The game gets released anyway. Before I make this prediction, can fangames be called "homebrew"? oh well, here goes... Sonic Robo Blast 2 finally gets Beta 1 after 9 years of waiting. Game is called the "Duke Nukem Forever" of fangames. Well, those are my predictions. Care to share yours?

You know, you're topic made me think about a certain Uncyclopedia article. Going back to the subject of confused naming, I did a search for "Atari 1600", and it turns out that you were right. This confused naming really baffles me, as well. Anyone else have any opinions on this?

While we're on the subject of corporate logos in video games, I would like to bring up the unskippable logos in most Game Boy Color games. They last 5 seconds per logo and always ticked me off at how long they stayed there, because I just wanted to start playing immediately. I didn't want to look at a bunch of logos. I wanted to start playing. This is especially annoying in Gex: Enter the Gecko, where the logos last about 10-30 seconds!

Journey of Dreams finally out!
Segataritensoftii replied to Segataritensoftii's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Sorry if I posted in the wrong board. Could someone move this to the Wii area? -
Well, the moment of truth has finally arrived. Nights: Journey of Dreams has hit the shelves. To tell you the truth, I had rather conservative expectations for this game, expecting it to be not as good as the original but still very enjoyable and fun. Gamespot gave it a 7.5, but they usually rate things being worse than they actually are, so you should always take their scores, indeed, all scores and reviews from any source, with a grain of salt. Other reviewers, however, rated this between 8 and 9, so I may actually pick this one up if I can lay my hands on a Wii, or if I get one for Christmas. Anyone else have any opinions/gripes/thoughts on this game?

Naming the bad games for the GBC doesn't prove anything. The bad outnumbers the good for most systems. It doesn't make the systems stink since you can just avoid the bad games and play the good ones. I find it disappointing how the GBC is judged only by the bad games, since there are a ton of overlooked good games that more than make up for the bad ones. I see you're point, but, as I said in my original post, most good games on the system were hardly advertised, and, therefore didn't do well. This gave the masses the illusion that the only good games on GBC were from Nintendo, because Nintendo were the only ones who were really doing anything to promote good GBC games. And this is exactly what's wrong with the system. Unless you're remaking something, converting a PS1 game, or making something for Nintendo, you're basically screwed for sales. And I hate the system because of that. Understandably, I was overjoyed when the GBA came out, because at last, we finally had a handheld from Nintendo that was actually WORTH giving a s*** about. Third party developers got the recognition they deserved, and everybody won. That's my opinion, anyway.

The Original Game Boy. Many loved it, many scoffed at it's garish green LCD screen, and still others outright hated it, but there's something to be said for it's success. Nintendo has been the best seller of handheld game systems in history. The fact that this garish game system sold the amount of 1/10 of the current population of the United States at launch proves that. Other systems tried, but failed to match up to the success that the Game Boy had. It's easy to see why, though. Many of these systems had very poor battery life, and what's more, they were much too big. Eventually, systems came out that could actually compete with the Game Boy in battery life and size. One, the Neo Geo Pocket Color, actually surpassed Game Boy in battery life. However, those systems didn't have the sheer marketing genus and muscle of Nintendo backing them. So they quickly died out. Now, let's go ahead to 1998. Nintendo was taking a very long time to develop their "Atlantis" handheld, and Nintendo's refusal to advance the Game Boy (no pun intended) beyond it's 1989-era tech status was beginning to make developers frustrated, and some even threatened to stop supporting the Game Boy if Nintendo didn't upgrade the system soon. So, in a last minute ditch, Nintendo released the Game Boy Color. Now, since this was the first time Nintendo ever made a real technological enhancement to the Game Boy line, so people must have been excited. Unfortunately, what we got was little better than the original. I, personally have never liked this system, and Nintendo made a huge, and I mean COLOSSAL mistake not upping the tech enough for developers. It seems that most developers had forgotten to program for 8-bit systems, so most games for the Game Boy Color either sucked outright, or ignored. And most of the good games that got ANY attention at all were from Nintendo. Do you see anything wrong with that? I sure do. And what's more, people snapped it up like nobody's business! And this is what is precisely why I hate this system so much. I just can't accept the fact that this horrible system got ALL the attention. If it was just a quirky little niche system that quickly faded into obscurity, I would have enjoyed it far better. As it stands, I would see fit to call it the worst Nintendo system ever made. And yes, I think it's even worse than Virtual boy, which, in my personal opinion, was a classic compared to this mega-POS. Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system.

You know you're a hardcore gamer if...

True Dat. It's a nearly universal rule that every platform, no matter how bad it is, will have at least one good game on it. -
So, would the 8-bit 3D games be akin to the RCA Studio II, graphics wise? RCA Studio II games were extremely simple, even to the point of boredom. Much like many of the 3D games back in the early to mid '80s, which were mostly boring maze games and flight sims. Elite would have been much like Baseball for the system. A very rich, very complex, perhaps a bit too complex for the system to handle, gaming experience. If so, I imagine that the Isometric 3D titles would be, gameplay wise, akin to the ZX81/Timex Sinclair 1000. Very simple, but got the job done, and was at least fun enough to keep you occupied.

Literally unbeatable games.

It's much easier if you kill Satan first. You'll need his pitchfork to even damage it. Don't know about everyone else, but I hate it because I don't ...read... .....this.... ...slow..... I hate it because the level design just feels so boring and monotonous. It always feels like each level is being repeated 5000 times, due to the near complete lack of any real level design variety and the fact that it's so long. Believe me, I watched a speed run of that game, all 50 minutes of it, and it almost put me to sleep. In fact, I'd prefer even the supposedly crappy CD-i Zeldas to Zelda II! The cutscenes may be awful, the controls might render the game nearly unplayable, but at least the levels have some variety! And I would gladly play any of Z2's imitators over Z2 itself! At least that's my opinion. -
Collecting for consoles you don't own.

The Incredible Machine (3DO) I got this one simply because I was a huge TIM fan at the time. I eventually ended up playing it on the FreeDO emulator. Chip's Challenge (Lynx) I actually ordered the system to play this on at about the same time I got this game. The game ended up coming and the system didn't. -
Jumping Flash. This has recently dethroned The Incredible Machine as my favorite game series of all time. There's just something about being able to leap 100 feet in the air and then smash the bejesus out of anything that happens to be moving from on high that feels liberating and sadistic at the same time. recently, I've been spending inordanite amounts of time on Robbit Mon Dieu at the library. =D

I'm more of a newer school gamer, so I'd have to say Rocket Power: Gettin' Air for GBC, which was also the first game I ever owned.

You're right. I've just been babbling about Shantae and totally ignored the topic. I'd love to see a game on the GBC similar to the FX-chipped SNES games. I don't know if it's feasible... I understand the SNES was built with chips-on-the-cart in mind. The Genny did it with Virtua Racing and I know some NES games had some extra chips which is why I'm thinking it could be done. Uploaded by yours truly. I could see an engine like this being used for near perfect to better than perfect ports of many arcade/console games Imagine Starfox, Starfox 2, , all the Freescape games, Hard/ Stunt Car Racer, Geograph Seal, Alpha Waves, etc all running at 15-30 FPS with little or no slowdown whatsoever. That's how good this software engine is. I just wish the source code was available...

I was just thinking about all the games that haven't been ported to GBC, Glover in particular. I've been wondering what an 8 bit version would be like. I think it would be something like the game Oxyd. you would roll a ball on a flat surface, solving various switch puzzles. you could transform the ball, and there would be a few 3D elements. what do you think you're favorite games would be like on a system like this?

I just posted my first serious game review on GameFAQs. Just thought you might want to see it. The game being reviewed is Bubsy 3D.

Top ten most underrated games ever
Segataritensoftii replied to Math You's topic in Classic Console Discussion
HAHA! Good one. You said "PC Game". That's like saying "Cancer game" or "Scurvey Game", or "being born with no feet, hands, eyes, or genitals game". None of those things are games Figgler. Those things are all just horrible and unenjoyable. Are you claiming ALL PC games are horrible and unenjoyable or the ones selected from the list. All PC games, except Half Life, Half Life 2, Doom (the original), and Wolfenstein 3D. What don't you like about PC games other than the ones you just mentioned?
