Race Drivin' on the Sega Genesis! Whoooo! Watching your car randomly fly off the track is hilarious.
It's fun seeing an accident happen normally, though.

Well guys, it seems the move to 3D was just the beginning. It's going to get a lot
Or maybe not. I don't think there will be nearly as much of a drive to go 4D as there was for 3D. Besides, we don't actually live there.

I personally like 3D games and find it amusing to see how various franchises handled the transition, but I'm okay if you don't like it. I think the worst thing about 3D platformers is that the models that could have worked well were either outright ignored(Jumping Flash games) or never made it out the door(Sonic Xtreme). Am I the only one who finds Mega Man Legends incredibly awkward? I look at the Jumping Flash games and think about how well a 3D Mega Man game would've worked around a similar formula. And I think I'm starting to become disheartened over Lemmings 3D. Level 2 is unusually difficult. If only there was a downwards facing camera so I could get a better look at my green-haired friends! If only the levels were easier! If only the game was isometric instead of in troublesome polygons! Sigh...First of all, congratulations on an interesting topic.
When i think of 3D ruining things, i immediately focus in on Castlevania. I don't care what anyone says, there has never and will never be a good 3D Castlevania game. The best you're going to get is a decent Devil May Cry clone with a whip, but it doesn't feel like a Castlevania game. Thank god the portables are keeping this franchise alive, but i can't help but think how beautiful a straight 2D console release could be at this point.
Every Sonic game i've ever played in 3D has felt pretty lackluster, as poorly designed 3D environments reduce you to plodding Sonic around cautiously for the majority of the game. Again, something that would look and play amazing if it returned to 2D on a console.
The Metroid series has gotten pretty mediocre in the move to 3D...i still buy and play the games, and they're not terrible...but they're bland and a bit boring when looked at from the perspective of an FPS. Metroid Prime 1 and 2 were okay games, they're small fish in the big pond of the FPS world, instead of being at the top of the heap in 2D.
Probably the biggest problem inherent in 3D, as far as i'm concerned, was that it took so damn long to make most games look even the slightest bit attractive. The N64/PS1/Saturn era will always and forever be the one i care about the least, because the terrible and primitive attempts at 3D literally hurt my eyes if i attempt to play for too long. The best games of this era are the ones that remained 2D, it's unfortunate that they're so few and far between.
On the flipside, even though i think the N64 installments are pretty ugly, i will say that Zelda is one franchise that seems to have benefited greatly from the move to 3D. A Link to the Past is still my favorite, but Wind Waker is a close second, and the N64 installments still stand as two of the most playable games on the N64 today.
Sonic Robo Blast 2 handles Sonic in 3D quite well, although admittedly it's a bit harder to control than the 2D Sonics.Every Sonic game i've ever played in 3D has felt pretty lackluster, as poorly designed 3D environments reduce you to plodding Sonic around cautiously for the majority of the game. Again, something that would look and play amazing if it returned to 2D on a console.
I think the game that handled the move to 3D the best was Pong. 3D Paddle Bash on the Mac changes it from something hopelessly dull into one of the most fun games ever.On the flipside, even though i think the N64 installments are pretty ugly, i will say that Zelda is one franchise that seems to have benefited greatly from the move to 3D. A Link to the Past is still my favorite, but Wind Waker is a close second, and the N64 installments still stand as two of the most playable games on the N64 today. -
Will anyone post anything? it's rather lonely here.

To a retro gamer, the third dimension is like a beast. It chews up franchises and regurgitates them, often leaving them without their charm or fun factor. Because of this, most classic gamers instinctively fear 3D and try to keep away from it.
So I wanted to ask you, when did you see your favorite franchises go 3D? Did it cause you to stop believing in said franchise? Or, barring Mario 64, did it make it the best game ever? What was the worst 3D game you've ever played?(barring Bubsy 3D) How would you make the 3D versions better? I'd really like to know.
Update: Just found a really interesting article on 3D games. It offers some nice design tips and talks about what went wrong when games started moving into 3D. I kinda wish the article was written in 1995 instead of 2003. If that happened, there might have been a lot less crappy "me too" 3D evolutions of franchises out there.

[talking to losers at Gametrailers]You lose! Good day sirs.[/talking to losers at Gametrailers]
My list for the win.

Okay, then I will!Maybe you should just memorize this list of funny place names:Walla Walla !
Coucamonga !
Seattle !
That might work.

For info about this, go to my other topic. It seems Nintendo has heard about my ideas and is trying to make game systems based on my first and third concepts. The systems, called the Nintendo OMG(pronounced awmg) and the Nintendo BS will be making their way to store shelves on march 12, 1895 in Walla Walla, New Hampshire, Cowgamonga, Jupiter, Seattle, Washingmachine, Hyrule, nowhere, and Whatsasagipedia, Japan. Nintendo is currently trying to create and perfect a method of time travel in order to meet this release date. The games will come on cartridges that will come in boxes the size and shape of a pack of hanafuda cards. The OMG's launch titles will include Super Mario dimensions, Ultra Smash Bros. 66666666666667: The ultimate borenament, OMG pork, and Zelda: The return of the return of the etc. of Hyrule, while the BS' launch lineup will have Warioware: crap on a stick, Nintenergyballz, Wii megacollection part 314159.14159, and Yoshi: the day the developers ran out of ideas and put him on a black screen.
What do the masses have to say about these awesome systems?
For the OMG, Rick862879281 of Nolife online forums praises: OMG NANOBOTZ!!!!! THYS OP3NS up SO MANI NOO P0S1BILIT3S N CONS3PTS I KAN HARLY BEL3VE M1 EYEZ!!!!! THIS IZ SOO FUN 1 WANT 1T NOW!!!!!11!!!1111111!!!!!!!11
lamer3.784397945 of noobzorz.com has this to say about the BS: ZOMGZOMGZOMG U CAYN RECH INT00 TEH SCR33N N T1CH STUF!!!!! DIS IZ SOO KEWL ND S3W F0N ITZ FIKIN JENuS!!!!!!! THiS WiLL B3 T1H BAST KOMZOLE IN TEH UN1V3Rs3!!!!!
Edit: It seems that the release date has been pushed back to Never and will be available exclusively through The Mall at The End Of The Universe, which can be accessed through a conveniently placed wormhole leading to the universe of The Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy The wormhole can be found on planet Dellawarez.
So, How did I do? Please tell me you're ROFLing right now.

................... Ummmmm...(dangit, I can't make up my mind whether to keep the Game.com on the list or take it off.) Tell you what, I'll get back to you in a few days.I'm one of the few that actually liked the Game.com, it's got some great games, the trick is to stay away from the "action" games, side scrollers, fighers, Sonic (actually, Fighters Megamix wasn't half bad. Wasn't half good either, but of fighters, I actually playd that one more than once
)I think the Game.com was the Puzzle master though
and hey, maybe where Nintendo got the Idea for touch screen in a game system (even if the com flopped)Like the Virtual Boy, had this thing had it's last run of games released, I think it could have had it's must have come out (there was supposed to be some 3D shooters, doom style for the VB, and the com did do well with Resedent Evil, and Conker and the mega pets would have done well, had they come out)
Over all, this system gets a bad rap, cause people buy it, and the one game theyre interested in (probably a fighter, or sonic) and say the system over all sucks, even though it did Game show, and puzzle games, and heck, even Arcade games really well. And it did something that GameBoy didn't, it played Resedent Evil and Duke Nukem, and actually did quiet well for both, IMO.
If it slips another notch down on the list eh, I'll be happy. As a system, it wasn't great, but it was the games that killed it IMO. And comeon, for handhelds, this is actually in the top 3. GBA being first, though the player, Lynx being second thanks single handedly thanks to lemmings, and game.com being third. Hey, I played this more than my Super Vison, NeoGeo Pocket Color (though just because I beat all the games I own on that, and have no interest in others), Game Gear, Game King, Wonder Swan and Microvison. And there's more handhelds out there that I haven't played.

I see someone is liking my list enough to make a spinoff. Just be warned, though, you're going into very risky and dangerous territory. Chances are, someone's going to disagree with something on the list, no matter how much you tweak it and move things onto and off it. That said, here's a few things I'd like to see on the list. Jupiter Strike (PSX): Horrible draw distance and slow, clumsy controls make this one sorry Starfox clone. Karate (2600): A horrid excuse for a 2600 fighter. The fighters look like they're dancing with each other and occasionally kicking each other in the nuts. The control sucks too.
And if you're going to have PC games, put in: Sonic Mega Quest (Windows 3.1 and up) Widely regarded as the worst fangame of all time by many, this game includes a generic storyline, zero gameplay(You walk around, and... you walk around.), and terrible graphics(the sonic characters look like they've been run over by a mack truck). It feels like you're playing a powerpoint slideshow. Crash(insert name here) (Windows 98) If you want to know how NOT to make a Game Maker game, you've come to the right place. This game has grey backgrounds galore, pitiful level design, and meaningless bosses that all do the same thing, just with different variations in movement. (In fact, 90 percent of the game IS bosses.).

And, I'm back online. In case you didn't hear, I have been at a retreat for the past two days and didn't get a chance to reply to anyone. But now I'm back!
aren't you happy? -
Just to clear something up for all of you, reflexion means puzzle in French. Some people who use French as their native language often use reflexion in English conversation.
-
Sorry for double posting. I just wanted to inform you all that I'll be at a retreat for the weekend, so don't expect any updates on Saturday. You can expect updates on Friday morning-afternoon and Sunday afternoon, though.

By your request, Gizmondo has been banished from the list. I knew there was something wrong with it's inclusion. My only problem right now is the Gizmondo. I think maybe it's negative publicity might be influencing that one. With the other real bottom of the barrel stuff on the list, I don't know if it wouldn't get a pass just because of halfway decent emmulation (or so I read somewhere) and multimedia capabilities. That poor thing was even bashed to pieces on the N-Gage forums for goodness sake. With games like "Sticky Balls" and a GTA type game where you get out of prison by letting yourself be violently raped... well I guess bad press was guaranteed even before all the extortion stuff.I know one guy here used to have one. Anyone here own one and want to offer a defense?

Actually, the second after I made this topic, I looked on the main forum page and the forum was there, lo and behold.http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showforum=32It's still there?
Unless a topic you were following was moved to the Politics and Religion forums which is hidden. Strangely, some topics are moved to P&R while others are not. It seems like some mods (who I won't name
) will move a thread the minute the topic starts to lean *against* thier politicial views.
That's where I made it. I think the reason nobody's posted in it yet is because they aren't finished reading everything on the thread I linked to.http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showforum=32It's still there?
Edit: Heres your topic....
http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...=106476&hl=
Seems it was moved from "Current events" to "Off topic>General chat"
-
I know. Isn't this great? You know, with all the discussion and debate, and the moving things onto and off the list, this is quickly becoming the "Official Atariage Worst Console Ever List" It's actually shaping up into a pretty strong list (way better than the ones from sites lke Gamespot, where the list is usually actually the "Systems that took the most journalistic abuse list).
Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if this topic got pinned.
-
I've noticed that these two forums are gone. I feel that any forum without a general disscution forum in it can get very boring. What happened to it? Is it on maintenance or something? I had this cool topic about "The awesome power of the WWW" that I wanted to post there that was going to include information on this legendary thread on Nsider where everybody exchanged information and got educated about quantum physics and gravity and such.

The train game was called Gunpey. I think there was also a version on the DS. And no, I will not put Wonderswan on the list. It might go on the honorable mentions though.

No, the train game isn't Gunpey. I think it was Densha de Go or something like that. That "train game", if it's the one you are thinking of, isn't a WonderSwan exclusive. It's on a bunch of systems in Japan. There were even custom controllers made for it. Gunpey is a puzzle game where you try to match up lines. It has nothing to do with trains.
Ah.

I have to chime in.....Halcyon has to be on there...2 games total, right? How about the Laseractive? I know the few titles it had were decent but the prices are way too high. They are fairly tempermental to keep running IIRC. Its an exercise in frustration...you have a console system BASED on the weakest system in the laserdisc arcades....makes good sense to me

I just put Halcyon on the list due to popular demand. It was in the honorable mentions list for a while.
and for all of you kids that wanted to grow up to be a train conductor, you have that sparkling gem of a game to practice with (I think it was called GO! GO! or something crappy like that). The train game was called Gunpey. I think there was also a version on the DS. And no, I will not put Wonderswan on the list. It might go on the honorable mentions though.

Edit: Turns out the train game isn't Gunpey at all. It is known as Densha De Go.
Come to think of it, I will put on the Aquarius! How about Mattel Aquarius? Its like a crappy pocket calculator on steroids with hulking power cables and a steaming pile for a library of software. I'd rather have fillings than play the system. -

I found this on the GMC forums a while back. The topic title said "my cool game" and the subtitle specifically said to "plz rate". It turned out to be the worst, most hideously malformed thing ever created with Game Maker. This "game" involved leading Crash Bandicoot (if that's what the tiny, unrecognizable blob of pixels was supposed to be) through 2 "levels" and then fight boring, unimaginative bosses. If I were to describe this game through a mere description, it would take a large encyclopedia, as no amount of words can describe this train wreck from hell. It's weird, boring, unfun... I...just can't find the words. The best parts of this game are probably the music, and this lovely bit of dialog. "hi im crash bandicoot you will see me alot cause im the main character". Yes, that's the best the creator could come up with. Since I don't use Windows anymore, I can't provide you with screenshots, but I can provide you with a download link! Can you stand the horror that is Crash(insert name here)? Check the attachments to download.
PS: I know this is a stupid topic. My next one will be better, I promise! :takes pity:
update: Screenshot added! Now you may see the everloving crap that is this game.

The word "worst" is kind of ambiguous here, and something that is largely unquantifiable in this context anyway. Worst how? Poor-quality construction? Poorest graphics? Fewest fun/tolerable/playable games? Eats babies and kills puppies?Okay, let's try this. Forget about when it came out. Forget how much it cost, how good its graphics were, how advanced its controllers were, how modern its library was, how it compared to its competition, or how well it sold. If you were to play any of these "worst" systems today, would you have fun with them?
That's exactly what I'm doing. Hyperscan was just bumped off the #1 category.
It's nice to see a few other Channel F fans/appreciators in here though.
I like Channel F as well. I have the original hardwired 1976 model, which is still in great working condition! The only problem: I need more games. -_- Baseball, Hockey, and Tennis will not hold my attention forever.
-
Wow, I never knew about Mario's Time Machine. I wonder how long Nintendo will hold off on throwing that on the VC?Probably forever. None of the versions were too good anyways.
-
ACK! When was the Odyssey 2 added to the list? If you think that's the 5th worst of all time, you might as well put the N64 in the top 5. O2s are kind of limited, but they're hella cool. Just play either of the KC Munchkin games, Smithereens, or get a gang together to play Quest for the Rings.Oh my God, me and Gabriel agree on something. I need to mark this in a calander or something.
I think the O2 gets a bad reputation for nothing. I know i have fun playing it, and can't picture why other people don't. Hey, if you don't like KC and KTAA, that's your loss.
O2's been taken off the list along with Atari XEGS.
By the way, I actually do like KC munchkin.

-
I also think the Hyperscan in the number 1 slot is a bit hasty. Surely one of the games for it is marginally entertaining for 1 or 2 minutes.Well, there's Ben 10.
Tell you what, if that Spider-Man 3 game comes out for it, and it turns out to be entertaining, I'll move Hyperscan to #2, deal?

Nights on the Wii?

More news on the game from IGN. It appears this game will have the classic controller style as an option. I'm a bit skeptical about this as it may limit the gameplay somewhat.
