  1. whoa look at all the color on the add reply page now :)

ive only played the CDi, 32X, and Jag from that list

i would use the 5200 and Channel F to knock off the CDi and Jaguar from that list :D other than that i wouldnt change a thing

Don't dis Channel F! It was the first digital cart based system released! I have one and it's my...My...MY PRECIOUS! But seriously, don't dis it. After all, there are much worse systems that came after [cough]RCA Studio II[\cough].

  2. The Jaguar and 32x have very little to recommend them but they are still much better than the Odyssey 2 and the R-Zone.

Hell I like the 32x much more than the PS1 so far. I say so far because I only have about 10 games for the PS1 and they all suck. At least in the 10 I have for the 32x, there's a couple of decent ones.

Hold on while I put those in the list. I'll be right back. :runs off to main post:

  3. 7. Watara Supervision

I never played this one, but I kinda knew from the start that it was doomed since it looked like a cheap rip-off of the Game Boy.

My thoughts exactly. It's even worse when you play it. I could find very little on it that I liked, and most games on it were slow, plauged with flickering, and had terrible music that sounded like someone just had an infent bang on a Casio and called the resulting cacaphony music.

  4. i would use the ... Channel F to knock off the CDi and Jaguar from that list :D

Come now, at the time the Channel F debuted it blew the socks off its competitors. It didn't retain its edge for long, but I hardly think a console that successfully started a revolution(*) deserves to be in a "worst-10" list.

(*)Yes, I know the Atari 2600 was in the pipeline when the Channel F debuted, but I believe the Channel F was the first such machine to establish the 'razors and blades' marketing concept. Though come to think of it, had the razor companies really taken off with that concept yet, or was everyone still using the interchangeable standard-size razor blades?

Well, actually there were analog systems before it that used the same concept. Channel F, however, WAS notable for being the first digital system to use it.

  5. I've heard that as well (the PSP downloadability, hadn't heard of the PS3 playability). Apparently it is possible to copy the 2 files needed (1 game, 1 copy protection) from the memory stick to PC for backup purposes which is very nice to hear.

The titles seem ill chosen though...CoolBoarders, Crash Bandicoot, Hot Shots Golf 2, Syphon Filter and Tekken 2. I mean, Tekken, Syphon and Hot Shots all have vastly superior PSP versions already and Coolboarders wasn't that good even when it was first released and certainly is no match for SSX On Tour. Crash is really the only one of any use to most gamers I would guess.

Well, there's also Jumping Flash. That's worth a look. It's hella fun, especially if you get "Super mode". Then you can run a lot faster and jump a lot higher than you can normally(which was already ridiculously high to begin with.)

  6. A "worst" console should have at least these characteristics:

    1. Bad physical design. I.e., it is uncomfortable, difficult, or inconvenient to use.

    2. Low quality. It should break easily or work inconsistently. If it is also expensive, bonus!

    3. Outdated audiovisuals and/or controls. It should have fewer buttons than the competition. It should have buttons on the console that other, contemporary consoles have on the controller. It should be digital while the competition is analog. It should have worse graphics and sound than its competition. And don't argue specs, the differences should show up obviously in the games. Humiliating screenshots should be used whenever possible.

    4. Bad software selection. It should have few titles and entire genres should be poorly represented, if at all.

    5. Presentation. It should be poorly marketed. It should have a crappy pack-in game. It should have few launch titles. It should have no "killer app."

Let's take the XEGS as an example:

    1. The keyboard cable is too short and the joystick ports are difficult to access, being angled and hidden. Also, the keyboard does not have a great feel (mushy).

    2. It is fairly well put together.

    3. Can we say 8-year-old technology? Compared to the competition (NES, SMS), this thing is a joke. The graphics were noticeably worse:

    post-6060-1177971335_thumb.pngpost-6060-1177971742_thumb.png

The sound wasn't much worse than the NES, but it was worse. And have a look at the controllers: That's right, the same controller, with a single button, that was released with the 2600 ten years earlier.

    4. This is a mixed bag. There were only about 30 games released for the XEGS - but it was compatible with the vast majority of 800/XL/XE games released over the previous 10 years. However, it can't be considered much of a selling point when most of your library is 5+ years old - which also meant that new genres were utterly dominated by the competition. The XEGS had almost no scrolling shooters of any note, nothing that could really compare with Zelda, nothing that could compare with Metroid, nothing that could compare with Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy. Let alone games like Super Mario Bros. 3, Crystalis, Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Bowl, Castlevania, Contra, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!, Baseball Stars, etc.. The XEGS held its own in the genre of early 1980s coin-op ports, though.

    5. Look at the stupid thing: Pastels? Outdated hardware, with limited software, released two years after the competition? Join that with quite possibly the worst pack-in games of all time, Bug Hunt and Flight Simulator 2, and I'm surprised anybody bought it at all.

Conclusion? The XEGS is among the worst consoles of all time.

The Mattel Hyperscan has nearly all those attributes. And the ones it does have, it does much worse than the XEGS ever could. Refer to this thread.

  7. The only one's I've played on that list is the Jaguar and 32X and I like them both but I can understand why they would be on there. It's good to see that Jaguar was only number 10 though.....when I first saw the title I figured it would have been around #3. What about the Virtual Boy?

Too high a percentage of awesome games to qualify. I'm only judging the systems based on how low a percentage of good games there are. The only way to truly judge a system is by it's games. Not by how much of a weird and terrible idea it was or how well the controllers worked. The 5200 is an exception to this rule, however. Maybe that should be an honorable mention. As the Angry Video Game Nerd has said: "What's the point of owning a f*cking console if you aren't able to f*cking play it?"

  8. I agree. Of all the systems that I own (both modern and classic), my Jag gets the second-most playtime. This certainly wouldn't be true if most of the games weren't fun to play.

Moral: all top-10 lists suck.

Well, there weren't enough truly bad systems in the market to make this as good a list as it could've been. Tell you what, I'll make this into a top 7. Then you'll agree with me on everything. I'd put the Gamate on here, but I don't have enough information to truly judge it yet.

Did you agree with me on the Hyperscan, though? I tried as hard as I could with this list.

  9. Every hardcore gamer may have seen these at least once. Those lists that go on about how incredibly crappy these systems are and why they shouldn't have been released. But there is a problem with these lists. Every single one of them are crap. Chances are, if you find one of these lists, you're going to disagree with almost everything on it. This list is different. This has been compiled through more or less extensive research, and the desire to do it right. I won't add descriptions, because with my writing skills, they would probably suck anyway. So here goes the list of the TRUE top ten eleven perpetually changing in number worst game systems ever made.

update: The Hyperscan has been kicked off the top spot as worst game system ever. ALL HAIL ACTION MAX! You're next, Jaguar & 32x!

update: true to my word, I have banished Jaguar and 32x from the list. Only the truly bad survive.

update: Game Boy Color in no more on the honorable mentions list!

update: due to a brilliant post describing how great the Creativision was, it is no longer on the list.

    11. Gizmondo(An awesome media player with really crap games)

    10. CD-i

    9. Game.com

    8. Watara Supervision

    7. Memorex VIS

    6. Pippin

    5. RDI Halcyon(If purgatory exists, then it is a world that forces you to play Thayer's Quest and NFL Football until you snap. Those were the only two games that came out on this crappy laserdisc based system.)

    4. R-Zone

    3. RCA Studio II

    2. Mattel Hyperscan (The "Hyper" in the name is probably to say how quickly it lost it's popularity. ;))

    1. Action Max (It plays VHS tapes, for crying out loud. VHS TAPES!)

Honorable mentions: Atari XEGS(Nobody wants to play Mario Bros. or Choplifter anymore. WAKE UP TO 1987, ATARI!), Playdia, PC-FX(any system that has 90% dating sims has to suck. I mean, Where's the variety?)

So, what did you think? Wasn't that a bit more reputable than most of those other lists out there? If anyone can offer me suggestions or corrections, that would be greatly appreciated. Also keep in mind that I've never even played most of these systems before, so if anyone can tell me where I can get the Systems and their games on the cheap, that would also be appreciated.

  10. Good work!

I noticed that Capcom is a sponsor on the I am 8-bit website. IIRC, they own the MegaMan properties.

I wonder if they would give a blessing to this being released on cart or not. :)

I'm hoping it gets released on a limited edition "Megaman X collection gold". That would be almost as cool as a cart release. If there isn't so much as a binary released, I will be very put out. :x

  11. Completely useless, isn't it? Sony are clinging for dear life on the 'Playstation cool' they had back in 97. It's gone now, they really have to try as hard as anyone else.

Ah well, when the layers of dust on unsold Euro PS3's gets too thick to see through, maybe they'll come back with a better ad. plan. Certainly hope so.

Such a shame to see them making the same complacent mistakes as others have made before (Sega, I'm looking at you).

The US ads are almost as bad. "OMG TEH PS3 KAN LEVITATE EGGS N TEH AYR!!!!111!!!11!!!!1!" They don't make you want to buy the PS3, they just make you scratch your head as you try to figure out what the hell that was supposed to be. PS2 did those types of ads before, and did them well.

  12. It reminds me of the switch from Atari with its finger on the pulse of America, to Atari = lame.

    To illustrate:

    Good Atari:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ1Qg-Ny75g

    Retardi:

It should be so easy to make the PS3 look cool. It's like the PSP ads. Those original "Take Me Out" commercials almost sold me on the system before there were even any games (oddly, it was my N-Gage that made me hold off; weird hey). Later they have black and white dirt talking about playng carpet. Just show some games and the things should sell themselves.

This should be the "Good Atari" commercial:

  13. I've got a dead Sonic 3 cart. Those ones are hard to find in good condition! I got a replacement from Goodwill once, but that had a dead save battery. I don't know where that one is anymore. I think my genesis copy of Sonic 3D Blast might be on It's way out as well. Good thing I have the Saturn version. 8)

  14. This isn't the worst game I've ever played, but Mario's Time Machine for the SNES is probably the worst Mario title ever created. All those people who think Hotel Mario was horrid, they do not know true pain. The main flaw of this game is that they make you do homework to get further in the game. That's right, HOMEWORK. And the actual levels aren't any good, either. You just walk around and talk to people. That's it. No koopas to bash, no coins to collect, no pipes to enter, no nothing. In fact the only part of the game that's actually fun is the surfing part that you go through before you play the actual level. This is an insult to Mario, video games and even educational games everywhere. Even the boring filler educational games by MECC on the apple ][ were tolerable compared to this elephant f*ck. More hate of this game can be found on Wizwar100(of youtube)'s

    .

  15. Next up, a port of Mega Man: The Power Battles to the Fairchild Channel F!

I REALLY hope this game appears in binary form. By the way, the music sounds great. :D

  16. Awesome! Wasn't that a special edition one for EA or Sega sports? (it's darn cool looking though)

I have a black "Sega Sports" DC too. Yes, it came with NFL 2K and NBA 2K. Both great games. It also came with a black controller that reads, "Sega Sports." :D

AWESOME!! I'd like to get one of those some time. Just cause the Black is cool looking. Black controller too huh? I bet there aren't to many of those around at all...

I only have a Dreamcast. And 3 games. Two of which are sonic games. Yeah my life sucks.

Hey, Sonic was awesome on the Dreamcast. Could have been better, and my Revisit to it showed it just didn't hold up in the long run, but I played through the first game quiet a few times in early 2k. What's the other one BTW?

    Soul Caliber. Pretty good one.

  17. Bookman what happend to the forums??

    Jim

Wod up Jim technical difficulties, everything has been moved to NESgalaxy.com. Go to forums. Soon nes-geek.com should redirect you here. You can still go directly to ericbookout.com/nes-geek/forums if you like the older style. Let me know what you think. I will be emailing everyone.

Nice work, but could you consider making the site (www.nesgalaxy.com) a little more NES friendly? Sites with flash homepages usually slow down my computer. I also support the any browser campaign for making websites accessible to all, so there's two reasons. Number three, There's a web browser for the NES called contiki, and it would be really cool to see this on a real NES.
