The First real Hyped Console Launch!  I stayed up all night in very cold parking lots that night!  I got one!,  and myself and a friend bought one more to eBay!...Wal Mart Sucked!   Target Ruled!  They gave out Vouchers to us at 7AM so we no longer had to wait in line...Then Circuit City had a spare (1 left over somehow) they sold us!!!   KayBee Toys got in IIRC,  12 units to fill the 375+ Pre Orders they had taken,  so they instantly made it a purchase "Bundle" and forced those lucky few, AND FUTURE recipients to buy a game and an extra controller plus memory.  We all quit shopping at Kay Bee Toys that day hehe...Myself I spent over $800 that day, but as Target gave us new Target VISA cardholders 20% off, my bill was initially over $1,000!!

I played the PS2 all weekend (Plus that extra Vacation day), starting at about 8:30AM after all the night's happenings...

      GOOD TIMES!!!

I still consider the PS2 one of the best consoles of the modern era. To me it's almost comparable to the Atari 2600 in its sheer longevity and its momentous catalog of games. That whole generation was the sweet spot of modern gaming imo. (Full disclosure: I don't miss the unskippable cinematics of so many games back then).

^I Agree!   It was the last good games console without a catch.
