  1. I was under the impression that I-War (aka Netwar) was also released for the PC, but I've never seen it in spite of trying to locate a copy.

I-War (a space sim) and Netwar (overhead shooter) were released for the PC. Neither is related to the Jaguar game.

  2. I found a review of the PC version, check this out -

Could have been fantastic, but falls down when one seriously tries to play.

I'm about he biggest fan of Tempest that there is. I co-held the world's record for about 6 months (1982) and even owned a stan-up machine for several years (should have never sold that!).

Anyway, the premise of Tempest 2000 is to port the Atari Jaguar title to the PC/MAC in all its glory. Graphically, the PC version is very faithful to the Jaguar, and the controls are responsive and clean. Play is pretty much ported over exactly too.

My main (and extreme) gripe is that the software alsmost seems like it was not playtested after about 40-50 levels. each level inrcementally increases the difficulty, to the point that at about level 65 or so, it's IMPOSSIBLE to proceed. I mean IMPOSSIBLE. I went as far as using a variable clamper (holding things like # of lives constant) and was unable to proceed any further. This took what could have been an incredible experience and made it absolutely no fun. I ended up giving up (and I don't give up easily).

Avoid this title at all costs unless you plan to collect it (and not play).

Is this true for the Jag version?

  3. I linked to the freeware Tempest remake, because it's freeware. I thought you guys might enjoy it.

I really have no idea what else this thread is about, but free games are always a good thing, aren't they?

    Also, I don't have a Jag...

Can you blame me for trying to find out what Jag games I can play anyways? ;)

  4. It used to be my favorite system.

"Holy shit, this looks as good as NES!" It was fun to be poor as a kid - even a bad game like Karateka blew my mind. Title Match Pro Wrestling was horrible, but just bug testing it counted as play time. I watched Galaga playing in the system at a yard sale, and wondered if games could ever get better than this...

    Then I played Metroid.

By the time I played Ultima Exodus, Dragon Spirit, Super Mario Bros 2, Crystalis, River City Ransom, and Punch-out, it was too late...

I knew the 7800 couldn't compete. It gathered dust. One day it disappeared.

    I didn't miss it.

Flash foward years later. Internet connects the world together. I discover how much potential was in that black box.

It's still not my favorite system; it dosen't even come close.

But no other system brings back the white water rush of discovering the world for the first time, just the start-up screen seems an invitation to play with magic...

  5. I have never been able to get myself to like the N64. Its a combination of the blurry graphics (hate that blurriness), the controller, the weak sound (i know it is a cart space problem), the total lack of good fighting games and turn based RPGS, and the fact that it tried to take the title of "Worlds first 64 bit console) away from the JAG (just kidding :D ).

I have owned it 3 diferent times, and i got one right now, and it is my least played console (i have 20 diferent systems).

I will keep giving it a chance, i have only played about 20 games for it, so i just need to try more titles.

blurry graphics? try rogue squadron, Majora's Mask, ready to rumble 2, world driver, and f-zero.

lack of good fighting games? mace, killer instinct, MK4, MK Trilogy, and ready to rumble are good.

sound? the new tetris soundtrack is great..check it.

    Have you tried

    ?

  6. Since new games are slow in coming, and we've put the Jaguar against everything except the NGage, why not take a page from XBox live, and create new challenges for the games? They can be as silly or as challenging as you want, just so long as they're worth trying...

  7. From what I read, it was an enhanced port. My guess is that what was amazing for the Jag, at the time, compared to the rest of the software library, wasn't as visually stunning running years later, on a better supported system - it didn't make many ripples.

  8. Religion or politics?

the Genesis' processor is three times faster than that of the SNES, however, developers were able to create much better visuals for the console.

    Which is telling the truth?

I think Alien Soldier looks better than Contra 3. Didn't SNES have trouble with a few sports games?

Of course, the SNES had a larger palette too, and transparencies, and Mode 7...

Another example is Playstation 3. While it is technically superior to the Xbox 360,

Minus textures and lighting, you're right, hmmm....

*Looks at Neo-Geo, looks at Jaguar, looks at X-Box 360, looks at PS3*

*Goes off to play SNES and Genesis.*
