Outer space Physics blow them all away in complexity. It's only a google search away.Im not going to do your homework for you.
Actually I don't think i'd entirelu agree here.. the very fact that there are very few constraints on the movement of spaceships CAN (butrt not neccessarily will) make control of objects easier than in a problematic land based or indoor environment, in which there are complex paths and obstacles to take into account.
These kind of environments provide not only considerably greater concerns for rendering and collision detection but can also require complex AI to not only affect the player but also handle a much more complex environment than empty space.
(Edit:And i'm not meaning this as a judgement call on any specific game's AI.)
Obviously the cases vary very greatly from game to game.. so whilst a land based 3d engine is significantly more complicated.. i'd say that the AI can't be conclusively stated to be universally harder in one type of game.
that's actually a great point that makes a lot of sense. there are actually more variables when you start adding a more complex environment than just outer space....
You do if the cars are reacting to and planning for the surface of the track, rather than following a predetermined set of behaviors.
Also, space allows more possible movement options - think about Chess, programming a computer to play it like an expert. Now imagine every piece has a full sphere of motion...

Whether it's pouring over thousands of lines for the cure to an AI routine that murders itself instantly, a single exit that reboots the game, or the worst sounds to come out of a PC since the late 80's, programming isn't for the weak of heart.
The campfire has been lit, anyone got any good horror stories?

Look back: Animation and art were what I was talking about when you challenged me. You think I'd try to argue AI and input response times with you?
I'll say it again: Jaguar was hurting when it came to art direction. You have Jeff Minter and Michel Ancel in the majors, a few guys looking not bad in the minors, and then you have people so bad that Double Dragon V, Bubsy 2, Air Cars, White Men Can't Jump, and Fight for Life are still selling the 2600 over a decade later.

PS1 does not ruin textures because it cant do math. It does math just fine. Then why must you subdivide when attempting floating point operations?

skies of arcadiaRandom percentage based, with a few attacks set to specific turns. AI wise, not much is happening - the real show is the work of the art and writing teams, both of whom knock themselves out to add a little color to a familiar story.
rogue squadronShooting ties is like microwaving popcorn - just like the programmers intended.
MaddenInvented the phrase "money play."
Gran TurismoCPU cars are unaware of the player.
GoldenEye'A lot of people talk about the AI in GoldenEye. In my view, the AI is not all that intelligent. There’s a guard. He’d see you. Either he’d attack you, or maybe run to activate an alarm. Some had patrol routes, some didn’t, just stood still. It was revolutionary for the time, but still not very clever.'

I could call those SNK titles average joesof that day too. Yeah they had more content but there were a lot of the same old same old with
different graphics.. to each his own.
Gorf - since you're a programmer, let me give you a test where you can quantify the results in numbers. Combine the total amount of animation frames per object/character in Metal Slug 3 - now find a non FMV, hand drawn, non-rotoscoped Jag game that comes close with full body character sprites.
Still not convinced?
The artists were good enough that there are fan clubs to their characters, with members who don't even like fighting games, and they still are appearing in new games a decade later.
Find me an Atari character who can say the same?

Draw distance can't be defined. If you want an idea of what's possible, take a polygon count per frame with textures, effects, and Ai enabled, then decide where you want those polygons to be, and how you intend to cover up the parts of the level you don't show.
For example, fog can increase draw distance; it simplifies some of the models. There are other tricks - software z-buffers tell the program to ignore whatever polygons aren't displayed.
-
What I'm curious about concerning these 2 systems is what is the largest possible draw distance capable on both systems?Short answer: Infinity.
Long answer: Under what conditions?

That is beautiful, as close to a museum as I've seen. Congratulations on bringing even the most obscure games to living life.
Is there any way to download all the gifs?
Could the games, with descriptions, be worked into a GUI for Stella?
My apologies, if I seem unappreciative of your hard work - I hope your idea spreads further than one site.

PSone ruins textures because it can't do the math, Neo Geo made the PS3 look like an experiment in socialism.
The Jaguar, programmed right, had the potential to be one of the greatest hardware set-ups ever made.
I'm curious - if you could take the games from any other system ever made, and have them ported to the Jag, which would you pick?
What kind of games have a Jaguar feel? (is there such a thing?)
-
The only reason the NEO-GEO can compete with the Jaguar is due to the software - SNK had some of the greatest artists of the time. Atari had everyday Joes. Metal Slug 3 was released for X-Box, and stores in my area demoed it in an attempt to sell the X-Box. Could anything 2-D on the Jag come close? Rayman eliminates arms and elbows, legs and knees - it looks great, but it also looked great on the Gameboy.
But here's the thing, switch programming teams on the systems, and try to imagine a low resolution, low color Trevor Mcfur competing with the Jaguar's Blazing Star...

That video's from a 16 bit. If the original Amiga can do those kinds of poly effects, why couldn't the CD32? Keep in mind, it was never pushed either.
-
We all know the Jaguar isn't 16 bit - but when you treat it like one, what are it's limits?

Gamecube - Majora's Mask.
Still waiting for another game to show me a living world...
PS2 - Taito Legends 2.
Darius Gaiden is a mediocre game, but a brilliant simulation of playing one. I mean that...it's the only game I can beat over and over and still return to...
GBA - Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Metroid cleans out it's dusty attic, discovers a billion things to collect. All of them unique.
VG Pocket - Tiger Rescue
The game I return to when I want to play a shooter...
-
What did they do right, exactly?
-
This game is a classic example of western CRPG's.. if you play that trite and cliche JRPG genre too much you may miss the underlying point of this game and others like it.I miss Ultima.
-
Remember all the posts about the Jag being programmed using the 68k? Repeat, minus 3d textures.
-
Well, since you asked, I'll tell ya.The graphics you crafted are really more suited to for an NES game than an Atari 2600 game. The pixels you're using aren't the ones used by the 2600. The pixels for that tend to be horizontal rectangles. The 2600 has an, uh, interesting way of displaying colors. A horizontal line of pixels can only have two colors.
I'm sure someone that knows how the 2600 better than me can explain this in more detail.
Thank you, I had thought this game was intended for the 8 bits.
-
Gorf - since we know the Jaguar can match Tekken's polycount, wouldn't it be fair to say the Jag is equal to first generation PSX games with the smoother textures and higher resolution you'd expect of emulation?
-
Is it really so bad it doesn't deserve comment? At least tell me what I'm doing wrong...
How else can I learn?

Nintendo may not create many new ideas, but they twist old ones like taffy to the point where it doesn't matter. Take analogue control; the 5200 joystick is famous for lying down on the job, breaking down under normal conditions - what's to boast about? Nintendo deserves every credit for bringing it back as the standard for controlling a character in 3-d space...

Jaguar vs. 3DO?
