  1. The back grounds aren't quite as inspiring - except that I was under the impression the 7800 cpu couldn't refresh a screen fast enough to do any of this. How did they work around it?

    Easy now.

There's a difference between "tile based games being more challenging to create on the 7800's free form architecture" and "the 7800 can't do tile based games".

Electrocop or no Electrocop, Scrapyard Dog does do this at a fast clip. It is possible and the proof was shown 17 years ago.

Scrapyard Dog's backgrounds are coloring book simple - it was the relative complexity of the tile sets that impressed me. I've read threads where it was claimed Super Mario Bros is too complex a tile set for the 7800...

  2. IMHO, Cybermorph was a great deal of fun, and a brilliant game design. Battlemorph was even better, and had some of the best music I've ever enjoyed in a game. I even bought the soundtrack when it was for sale on MP3.com.

If there was a sequel to these games in stores today, I would be first in line to buy it.

Sure there were technical limitations like the drawout distance, or the use of gourand shading instead of texture mapping that became so popular later on. None of this detracted from the enjoyment that myself and my friends experienced in playing these games.

Starfox, and many other games were fun too, but I appreciated the open game world, freedom from rails, and allowing me to take on the challenges in my own way.

I'm always curious why people obsess about specifications instead of just trying to enjoy a good game. Maybe it wasn't for everyone, but Cybermorph made me happy I bought a Jaguar.

    Have fun!

I agree, though I'm not sure the garuad* shading should be called a limitation, it's an incredible effect that some other consoles of the time didn't have. And as I said, I prefer it to textures due to the increased depth perception it offers over textrues.

*gourand? guraud?-probably the most miss spelled word in jagdom, I don't know if I'm spelling it right or not, though I've never seen it spelled with a "n" wish it was in dictionary, I don't even think I've ever even heard the word spoken! I don't think I even know for sure I pronounce it properly since I don't think I've ever heard it, just seen the written word with numerous different spellings.

Gouraud shading. It's named for it's creator, Henri Gouraud.

  3. Will the player's actions in the training room in any way determine the stats?

Yes, in every way. Everything you do in the "Lab" with/to your character effects their stats and abilities, and it's best to learn how to raise a good character before you ever bother venturing outside. You can come back inside at any time for any amount of time, but only if you are able to make it back to the Lab without being killed. It is also rare to be able to eat or sleep outside of the Lab, so it's important to plan ahead and pay attention to your stats when outside.

I'm not that great at making sprites, I need help. I came up with decent mouse sprites, but I'm sure someone else could do a lot better. I need overhead animated sprites that move in four directions. I also need 16x48 enemy sprites for the battle sequences, that are in the style of dragon warrior and phantasy star. I guess I have my work cut out for me with that.

  4. Because we could use some inspirational stories around here. Tell us about the first Jaguar game you played through to the end - what kept you playing, what stood in your way, what did you think of the trip?

  5. He's cocky and he could use a good editor, but the only thing offensive in this thread is the mistaken belief that we must all agree with the opinions of a select few, or else be excommunicated.

I hope Im not coming across that way. Im doing my very best to post facts to dispute what I see as mostly

inaccurate opinions that do not jive with the facts. If I am failing or not, everyone else will have to judge.

I certainly don't care what tastes another person has, that's for sure. I may disagree with it but God bless you

and enjoy it all the days of your life. If you see me arguing anything, more than not, it's techinical specs based

of facts commonly know aobut each system or things like homebrew vs professional. If Tiddly Winks is your

favorite game, just who the hell am I to say it should'nt be? Now come at me with a 'my favorite game blows

away your sucky favorite game becasue I say so' bull shit and you should expect something not so friendly in

the form of a reply. Most people here were asking the original poster to show evidence to back up his claims

    other than hi obvious opinion.

Gorf, you're fine, it's two others who turned this stupid before it could even be a debate. One's apologized, it was his humor not coming through. The other started this off with a yawn and an accusation of trolling.

You're a coder, you might be able to relate to how a writer feels, when they work over every word to make it all flow, and then someone spends 10 seconds trashing it without feeling the need to really add anything. The good reverend has been on defense since this thread began - no doubt he feels a little mobbed.

  6. Rev. Rob,

You listed Fighting Vipers 2. Is that something that wasn't released in NA? I didn't see it on the DC NA Checklist, the closest was Fighting Force 2.

    thanks!

    You guessed it.

And Rob, I hate you for being able to play it.

  7. I can't defend a game you've never played?

Why is it wrong to question your opinion, especially if it's just based on graphics (in an Atari forum? ;) ) and cartoons?

Also, stop throwing around the term fanboy - it's a lazy argument, and I expect more from you.

I don't have an X-box, or an X-box 360, and I have no plans to buy either.

Just because I don't agree with you, doesn't mean I'm attacking you.

Oookay then... I'm now just going to back away now... slowly... :ponder:

ATTENTION: For the remainder of this thread we will not mention the game Blue Dragon. It seems to upset some of our more "delicate" members...

    Tempest

:P One joke about the Super Mario Bros anime, and someone delicate has a seizure...

I'm sorry for asking you to keep an open mind about a game I've never played either.

  9. I'm not offended. I just think you're being silly.

Why would I want to play a game based on something I don't like? :?

    Tempest

Because you've got it wrong. The anime is based on the game. If you like Super Mario Bros, Panzer Dragoon, or Virtua Fighter, you know that a bad anime is no way to judge a game. I'm not saying Blue Dragon is good, just that you have no evidence it's bad.

  10. Can we even find 5 good ones? Let's find out. Here's my list -

Mortal Kombat - Takes the mythology just seriously enough to set up the spectacular fight scenes.

    MegaMan X: Day of Sigma - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5s8KGqwWjhM

Fatal Fury 2: At times unbelievably sexist; worse still, it requires you to watch the first Fatal Fury OVA to make any sense. Despite that, it's a must watch for it's depiction of the wandering fighters in these kinds of games as burned out addicts. One to make you think, and the last fight scene is one of the all time great anime battles.

Street Fighter 2: Here's what you do - watch the opening, see Ryu give Sagat his scar. Cammy fans can watch her break a man's neck, the rest of you will want to fast forward to Ryu vs. Fei Long and Blanka vs Zangief, or, if you're not a fan of the characters, head straight to the Chun Li shower scene. Keep going, there's nothing there worth watching, even if you're curious, it's been censored by Barbie and Ken, in an effort to convince the rest of us to cut off our nipples too. No, the scene worth watching comes right afterwards: Vega's attempted assassination of Chun Li is one of the best fight scenes ever put to film, and can stand on it's own. Nothing in the movie before or after can compare. After you've finished watching it, turn off the movie, fire up the game, play until you beat Bison.

Enjoy the ending. You've earned it.

    Btw: I don't own an X-box 360.

    Or an X-box.
