She was definitely in the wrong, and clearly needs some sort of professional help (she's reportedly lost her job).

But, the guy should have walked away with his kids once it was clear what was happening, instead of sticking around and exacerbating the situation. I've been in a similar situation myself, and there's no point in trying to talk back to someone who's that far gone emotionally.

(It's also not helpful to stand around in the heat of the moment to make all kinds of big statements about racism. It was wrong for him to be on the receiving end of that kind of treatment, but there are right ways and wrong ways to respond to it, and this was not the right way.)

My mother happens to also volunteer at a hospital. She's crazy and it's her way of 'giving back' to the community, or maybe the hospitals attempt to rehabilitate her. I don't care which, but feel bad for those involved--I moved a thousand miles away so I didn't have to deal with the crazy.
