Tell them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps? What if their boots don't have straps? What if they don't have boots? If they do have boots and straps, isn't trying to pull yourself up by your bootstraps like blowing on a sail and expecting the boat to move forward?

  Around 10 years old, I learned from a childrens cartoon that if you have some machinery that doesn't work, you should beat it with a hammer or something similar, then it will work better.
