Most people that have a serious complaint aren't true gamers... but if you are even mediocre at playing videogames you'll adapt quickly ...if you are even remotely adept at videogames the supposed "hard" games, lke PacMan, etc...arent bad once you practice. My 9 year old figured it out after about 3 games.... even if you are that bad at adapting...heres plenty of reasons to own a 5200 (and an 800xl which I own as well, just not modded), if you're a true gamer...It sounds though like you hated the 5200 controllers before you even got the system. If you can't handle the controllers with a game like Adventure2 though...Jetset
Wow, did you design the controller yourself?
Since you seem to care so much about my "true gamer" status:
I've been gaming for over 40 years, starting with electro-mechanical coin ops on the boardwalks in New Jersey. I've spent more quarters on "Chicago Coin" games than you have on Atari games. My first videogame system was a Fairchild. (more recently, I stood in line to pre-order a Wii and got one the first day). I was a teen when Pong came out. I pinched my fingers on the Atari Football trackball more times than you've played Pac-Man. My gamer-schlong is as long as anyone's on this board, but I guess questioning my "true gamer" status is your way of "getting me back" for offending your console of choice.
In my expert-gamer opinion, the 5200 controller sucks. You are free to disagree, but your choice to make that a personal insult and attack me belies the very little man that you are.
For the rest of you, more mature respondents, thanks for the input and advice.

I had no idea they could be that bad.
I bought the Adventure 2 LE cart after playing the demo on emulator. Very nice game. I thought, "Hey, I'll just pick up a 5200 on ebay and play me some Adventure 2". I spent $50 on a very nice 5200 with some good games (Ballblazer, Counterstrike, Star Raiders, etc.), and set it up. I took the controller in my hand...
Oh my goodness.
I had no idea the controllers could be that bad. Sure, I had heard stories, but those damn things make *any* game unplayable. I am a huge 8-bit Atari fan, and have played these games on the computer before. Playing them on the 5200 is pure punishment.
So there. After about a $100 investment to play Adventure 2, I'm ready to put the whole mess on ebay and call it done. Sure, I could spend another $150 putting an S-video mod and controller adapter on the beast, but my modded 800XL already has that ( and Adventure 2 is coming out for 8-bit, no? ).
So here is my question to the 5200 fans: Is there any reason to own a 5200, since all the games can be played (better) on an Atari 8 bit?
Also, any buyers?

I think a little too much is being made of this.Out of 250 sold, *one* shows up for sale?... and None on ebay (to my knowledge)?
It's not like the PS3 debacle

How so? We're just having a discussion. Really, the fact that even *one* has shown up so quickly is quite disgusting to many people. While I'm sure the seller will wind up posting here that he is only selling it to spend the extra on his "collection", blahblahblahblah...it's all about profiting from someone else's work. Nothing illegal about it. Not a hell of a lot ethical about it either, but that's the way it goes.
Yes, we are having a discussion. And in my experience discussions are a lot more interesting when people have different points of view

I'm not sure what the "How So?" refers to, so I'll cover the possibilities:
1. How is it not like the PS3? Well, the PS3 was bought out over the first weekend for the *sole purpose* of scalping. People got hurt, shot, and bunnies cried.
2. How is it that I think people are making too much of this? When people call selling THEIR OWN PROPERTY "unethical"!
I have a CE cart, and I won't be selling it. I'm just a little creeped out by people's reactions to this, though. If I did sell it though, you can bet I'd never say so... I'd get my tires slashed or something

Atari 2600 Adventure made the list... looks like someone owes Cafeman an apology

I'm a soon-to-be 5200 owner that bought the Adventure 2 cart. I *do* appreciate the box not being sealed... otherwise it would be a tough choice to play or not play. I finally buckled down and bought a 5200 on ebay, bringing my investment in the game to over $100.
My question is, how soon can we expect an 8 bit version (cart or disk file?) I know there's been some talk about it, but I'd much rather play via emulation (with good controllers) . I understand piracy is an issue, so I respect any decision not to go the disk image route, but I am curious.
How about Cafeman just emails me a disk image and I don't say anything more about it?

All kidding aside, Adventure is one of those games that takes me back 30 years. Thanks to Al and Cafeman for paying such a fine triubute to that memory.

I just picked up a used 5200 with six games and two contollers for $50 shipped. That's about what they're going for now, but on ebay the price changes depending on what else you get with the console.
I bought it to play Adventure II

My wife will kill me if she finds out I paid $100 to play one game.

...The manualPutting a brown/gold "retro" label on the cart would be awesome.
I'm not sure I want to do that, but I have printed such labels before and they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.

<killer images of retro brown carts>
..Al
Oh sure. Tease me with images like that and then tell me you won't do it.
You are a cruel man, Al

...The manual will be virtually the same, with whatever changes are appropriate for an 8-bit computer version (for instance, replacement of the 5200 controller pictured). The label will be reduced in size and formatted for an 8-bit cart. I already have 8-bit labels for this purpose...Al

Cafeman --
Count me in on the Disk Image. I already bought the 5200 Cart limited edition and don't have a 5200 to play it on

I'll gladly buy the disk image, but I'd go for a (reasonably priced) cart as well.
Short answer: go ahead and make it any A8 format you like. I'm your Huckleberry

Careful what you say about the 5200 controller here. I once posted a complaint about the controller, and some peabrained fanboy insulted me, questioned my masculinity, and performed all sorts of character assassination.
But yes, you're right. I think the 5200 controller is a great design on paper, but it was implemented by people who didn't play video games. Makes me wonder if the penny-pinching Tramiel had something to do with this. Even Best Electronics says that a rebuilt controller (with all new switch contacts) will only last 1-3 years. Pathetic.
