  1. I just want to give a shout out at Kasumi Ninja as well. For every awful game Atari published this one is really good for a laugh or two, actually one of my most played Jag games. I've heard Club Drive kinda has the same effect but I've never played that. If you can get it cheap then I would recommend it

  2. For me Tempest 2k, Raiden, Rayman, Cannon Fodder, Zool2,Wolfenstein, Missile Command 3D and Super Burnout are pretty nice titles. I think AvP is WAY overrated though. It plays like and dungen crawler with a useless map, almost no sounds and every corridor looks the same, pretty snoozy IMHO. The best game is probably rayman but that title is way cheaper for other platforms. In all honesty the Jag is more a curiosity to collect for more than to play for. Most of its library is pretty subpar and even the famous names like double dragon gets the worst versions ported to the jag strangely enough! Still there is something wierdly satisfying with playing Jag... it's just such an odd console....

  3. Hello! I just bought a copy of Tempest 2000 and plugged it in. I have some issues with the controllers though... You can only move one "step" to the left and then back again if you want. In the menu pressing left or right will make the marker go down or up but once you let go of it it resumes to its first position. I though my controller was broken so I tried with my other one. same issue. plugged both in and tried 2 player mode. Second player works flawless but 1st still has the same problem. Anyone experienced this!?

  4. I am not really intro buying one. I have owned two but it's more of a curiosity than anything else. I have played most CD titles published(the official ones) and I don't think a single game is even descent so it is more of a collector thing :) The best would probably be Primal Rage and that one is very expensive and also avaliable better and cheaper elsewhere :)

  5. If I got this correct the Jag was pretty hard to develop for but used a Motorola processor which was pretty common so thta made it easy to port 16bit titles with no imporvements over pretty fast and that is why the 64-bit monster boosted a lot of games looking equally cool as on a snes. And to make matters worse the SNES boosted Donkey Kong Country which loos better than anything on the Jag. The Jag is a curiosity. Most exclusives are early 3d space shooter types of games that have not aged well and often wasn't even good to begin with. It also seems Atari was desperaty to rip off everything. Mortal Kombat was rushed out as Kasumi Ninja. Virtua Racing had a Jag counterpart as the dradful Checkered Flag. Virtua Fighter is hip, well let's make one last game for the Jaggie, the awful Fight for Life haha :D. That and the remakes like Missile Command 3d, I mean make something inventive or original for gods sake! They announced a lot of weird hardware like a voice modem, vr helmet etc which I think adds to the myth :D

  6. The cartridge connectors probably need a good cleaning.

I've had a saveproblem with a Jaguar cart once, and after I cleaned the connectors it worked fine :)

What do you usually clean them with? I might add that the game didn't boot up first so I tried and cleaned them with a tops with some "electric fix spray" on and now it boots but the save obviously do not work

  7. mmmmh weird...never heard about this. Does it mean you need to delete the files?I guess you have tried this one already. The curious thing is that it sounds it is "normal" for the game. IF the message seem to fit the whole atmosphere of the game (characters, colors, police)..I am sure there is something you can do. If the message looks dull, maybe the cartdrige has some issues?Could you post a picture?

I took some photos, here comes! I've also tried to delete the files but it doesn't work

  8. Bought and untested copy or Rayman cheap at an auction and the game plays fine except for all the 3 save files in the beginning are labelled Error and when you try to save it displays a "save error" message. Any idea on this one?

  9. What happened to that company? Are any of the guys still in the game bussiness? Have tried for years to search the web about articles on them. WHY ON EARTH hasn't anyone made an in depth story about Kasumi Ninja?

  10.

Based solely on good : bad games ratio, I have no idea exactly how the Jaguar ranks compared to all other consoles, but I suspect it fares pretty well. In my opinion, at least 10% of the Jaguar games were quite good. As far as I'm concerned, there are other much more prolific consoles that have only a handful of decent games. The Wii and Wii U are examples, where I consider less than 1% of released titles to be good; anyone can feel free to name 100 great Wii games. I don't see the Jaguar as any different than other consoles with regard to per capita of quality games, aside from having a limited library and therefore fewer total.

I also think this discussion also ignores Iron Soldier 1 & 2, Battlemorph, Battlesphere, and Towers II - two of which are JaguarCD games. Some people are quite fond of Hover Strike unconquered lands CD too. Together with the VLM, the Jaguar CD has several games that make it worthwhile with regard to getting the best experience out of a Jaguar. I'm sure there are good games that I'm leaving out, but the point is that there are enough games to make an $50 console worthwhile, and when adding in the good CD games, there is a lot of fun to be had. (I'm looking at a Craigslist ad for a Jaguar with 7 games for $80, $110 to add in Doom and Tempest 2000).

I would also disagree about AvP being overrated. When I first saw AvP in action immediately after it came out, I was underwhelmed. Even after playing for a few minutes at a friend's house, I was disappointed. It was necessary to get it home, play (alone, in the dark) for long enough to get engrossed in the atmosphere, and to realize the sense of being in constant danger, requiring you to be careful, lock doors behind you, conserve ammo, and pay attention. It has a more slow paced survival horror feel than an action shooter, interspersed with sections that are frantic due to surprises or making the mistake of venturing too quickly into an area without securing it. Emerging from an air vent, only to hear the sound of an egg opening, but with no idea where it is, can be truly panic inducing. Hearing the taunts, facing the Predator, etc... I wish there was a current game designed like that, or even that the recent Aliens Colonial Marines was as good. Adding to this, being able to play differently as Alien and Predator - I can't think of any title from another console at the time that offered a similar experience.

It is my opinion that Atari had it right when some of the early development was geared towards 3D games that were sometimes slower paced and more strategic (Iron Soldier), and a bit more serious in tone. Doom and Wolfenstein, as ports of PC games, was the right direction. As I recall, at some point someone new was put in charge, and development was stopped on more interesting titles in favor of cute platform games and fighting games to compete with Nintendo or whatever. Instead of trying to attract console gamers, they should have been trying to attract computer gamers. I wanted to see AvP2, Black Ice/White Noise, Skyhammer, Battlewheels, and Legions of the Undead - not stuff to compete with Mario, Sonic, and Virtua Fighter.

So, as short lived as it was, the Jaguar did have some excellent titles. Maybe it isn't the best console, or the best for collecting, but there are some great games to play if that's what you are looking for. You can always sell it again later, and it is not like the prices seem to be going down.

You are problably right about that the Wii has more bad games per capita than the Jag, I'll give you that! I have never played Towers 2, Iron Soldier or any other games that you mention that are good so I don't know about them. The CD unit has I think 13 games not counting homebrew? And you'll easily have to fork up 100€ plus for one if you find one. I have played Highlander, Primal Rage, Myst, Vid Grid, Blue Lightning, Brain Dead 13 and Space Ace... Space Ace, Brain Dead and Dragons Lair shouldn't even be counted as games and the rest I tried out there are really crappy except maybe Primal rage which is playable but easily avalible on other systems as well. Tis in my opinion leaves the CD expansion as a pure curiosity and something most interessting for a collector.

  11. I just got to reply to this! I currently own a Jag and have owned a couple of ones before and even 2 cd add-ons. I am gonna be honest with the brutal truth; Th Jag has lousy games, the overall quality per capita is very bad. Avp is overrated as hell, probably a cool game when it came out, play it today if you're new to it I don't think you would be impressed. Doom is a fine port if you compare it to 3DO/Snes/32X but isn't the PS version better and more affordable? Not to talk about Zdoom and the likes for PC. Wolfenstein stands out as hands down the best version of the game I've played. Seems the 3DO version is similar so that might be just as good. Rayman is really good but hardly worth the extra effort. I know some people would like to claim it is the superior version or something like that but honestly it is probably down to the coolness of playing a good game on the Jag. Zool 2 is a worth mentioning in the good game category since it is the only version out for consoles and it is a nice platformer.

Tempest 2000 is okay for what it is but hardly worth the price for a Jag, I rarely played it but the music is awsome!

Missile Command 3D is also okay for what it is. Atari seemed to have a big thing for putting out "classics" in new versions for the full price on the jag. The VR mode is cool in this one but the price is as well. If you can get the VR helmet it is a must though ;)

And the CD-add on? Oh boy that is a crap fest beyond belief! Just try out Highlander which is an exclusive and you will believe me.

please note that I am not familiar with homebrew games.

Now you might wonder why I have a Jag since I just claimed it to be pretty much a sub-par system at least game-wise.

Well, I also like so-called B-movies which is trashy fun and the Jag is kinda the eqivalent of this! Most games are so poor so they are funny. Chekred Flag is almost unplayable which make one smile when thinking about that it was a game Atari actaully advertised for(!). Cybermorph, which was the pack in game looks like a poor mans Star Fox and plays as well as... well you get it! Everything from the design to the products of this failed monstrosity makes it funny so I like it! I would like to say that the killer app is... but there simply is no one! The best game is probably Rayman and while impressive it hardly is an exclusive.

    What I play?

Kasumi Ninja is hands down the game I play the most. It's not good, not at all but it's just so odd cliche its hilarious! That is recommended since it's a cheap one!

If you would like to collect for a system I would recommend the Dreamcast or Gamecube which have a much better library of games, or if you're into really retro stuff, the Vectrex! Good luck!

  12. I never said it sucked, I said it's sometghing of a rip-off. I don't have the mag here but at least Black Ice/White noice was listed besides Gorf and that isn't much of a game. An interesting concept maybe. And yes it looks like Hang On according to me.

  13. laird: I have played and owned both games and I also thinsk Super Burnout is superior but if you look at the games the look almost exactly the same. burnout have better graphics ofc.

The Jag had some great 2d powerness so it's a shame that 3d were in at the time resulting in some lacking titles.

As for the Rayman discussion I can't notice any particular difference except the cd audio in the other versions. The Jag has the upper hand in this though when you can save insted of using the outdated password system as on (at least) the Playstation version.

Also I don't think it's cool to say people are trolling. At least when I am not doing it. I am no video game expert so I judge system by their software as most guys who buys a system does. The Jag is an interesting system to collect for but at least for me the only Jag exclusive game that I(so far at least) have played that I am longing to play is Kasumi Ninja and that game is like universally panned. I dare to say that it is more fun than any MK game.

I read retro gamers game system guide where they listed the ten best jaguar titles and like 3-4 where unreleased or homebrew games and that kinda says something right?

  14. Yeah and Atari should have tried making a creative game and good game. Did they ever make a GOOD game for the Jag? Not saying Tempest.

Super Burnout is maybe the best example of a total ripoff. It's just Hang On with better graphics. FFL is just a ripoff(if you can even call it that) of Virtua Fighter and Checkered Flag is one of Virtua Racing. Kasumi Ninja is of Mortal Kombat and the list goes on!

Maybe if they got Black Ice/White Noise out it would have been something new. Maybe it would have sucked but at least it was a pretty cool concept.
