Robot Zed New Version. Run through randomly constructed levels!
Gemintronic replied to Sprybug's topic in batari Basic
I think blanket statements about developers who use a particular compiler are counterproductive. Baby is a good example. It was the guys very first game. He was also willing to put up with the draconian licensing they offered him. Just saying it would be easy to praise Sprybug without comparison to batari BASIC developers in general. We're a pretty diverse lot with different experience levels and tastes. -
Robot Zed New Version. Run through randomly constructed levels!
Gemintronic replied to Sprybug's topic in batari Basic
1. Try making a 4k game where everything has 3 frames of animation. Being frugal with storage space is not a lack of skill - quite the opposite! 2. Not every 2600 game must ape the scrolling capabilities of an NES. Doesn't make bB developer who choose pre-NES gameplay worse. I agree with your points in general and greatly appreciate Sprybugs work. Just don't appreciate everyone else's work being judged. -
Blocking things that can move on the PF
Gemintronic replied to Coolcrab's topic in 2600 Programming For Newbies
Assembly allows you to make trade-offs that bB can't. I'd suggest working your way up Spicewares tutorial series: http://atariage.com/forums/blog/148/entry-13884-collect-tutorial-index/ If we could get more batari BASIC users familiar with assembly then more mini kernels and asm based options could be developed. -
A long time ago I made a game that used flickering and alternating colors heavily: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/207626-mmsbc-2-done/ Long story short: it was very hard to look at on real TVs and 2600s. Every modern computer screen has varying response times and color temperatures. Could never get the eye strain down with just emulation. Another possible reason for lack of bB 4 player games is that readpaddle only works with a smaller subset of graphic options. Perhaps one day they'll be a drawscreen replacement that handles paddle inputs and multiple virtual sprites

The ball has the same color as the playfield. The first missile shares the color of the first sprite. The second missile shares the same color as the second sprite. It's sometimes a pain but it can be made useful. For instance: in games with an entrance you could use the ball as the trigger inside the door to transition to a new screen. Ball is the same color as the playfied so it just looks like the inside of the door.

bB can change the value of NUSIZ0 and NUSIZ1. Plus, the kernel he's using can change the height of the ball and missiles. Should be able to make some easier to see bonus items. Good use of scrolling!

Reached a point where I could defeat the huge skull that comes out of the dungeon with the old man in front. Without guides everything from there ground to a halt. Better items and materials stopped being obtainable during a play session. Bought the PC version but the controls were terrible. Now I think all versions run on the same engine with Playstation style controls.

Joystick direction gets stuck when fire is pressed
Gemintronic replied to Jron's topic in batari Basic
I always use a USB joystick when testing builds. The keyboard can cause problems. Bluetooth keyboards are worse as with bad signals or low batteries they can repeat keystrokes. -
the.golden.axe didn't seem like he lacked chops so that whole situation worries me. I don't think I'd personally trust dual power supplies enthusiast or big manufacturing made. I know it doesn't address the question. But, my thoughts

A working printf for the 2600.. Never thought we'd go from Adventure to Colossal Cave Adventure!

Consoles that make owning other consoles redunant
Gemintronic replied to Rick Dangerous's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I think the original PS3 was the last system with official 3 layers of compatibility. Although I suspect some DS models allowed GBA and GB? The jailbroken original XBOX and PSP almost put the rest of my systems in the closet. The emulators being easier and a bit more stable then PC counterparts. Really too bad building ISOs for the Dreamcast was so finicky. Also the sloooooow maple bus SD card readers. That could have been the ultimate all in one system. -
Minimum System Requirements for Raptor Basic +?
Gemintronic replied to mmbe's topic in RAPTOR Basic+ (Deprecated)
Not an official answer: just personal experience. The minimum for code -> build -> test I've found is Windows 7 32-bit or 64. It's been a long time since I've tried rB+ and Virtual Jaguar on 32-bit, though. -
I looked up Snatcher loose and it had a generic CD case.

Dunno how reliable this site is. https://www.pricecharting.com/game/turbografx-16/bonk-3-bonk%27s-big-adventure-[super-cd]

I wouldn't worry about it Jeffrey. My games really do take a years worth of effort and they're still unfinished junk. Some of your harshest critics are also your best providers of feedback. Even if it hurts.
-
I pretty much agree. Though I'm still not convinced assuming someone or some company is OK means it's OK. It just means you're personally OK with the legal risk and your own moral code. Which I guess is my main point too. Of course AtariAge feels their ROMs are legal. If you have additional concerns then it's up to your own due diligence.

Atari 2600 Programming for Newbies - the book
Gemintronic replied to Dionoid's topic in Atari 2600 Programming
Waiting for my IntyBASIC tutorial book to show up from Lulu. This is next! -
I'd love to create batari BASIC games that support your joystick adapter. If you had plans to create a mini kernel for bB I'm sure it'd help recoup some costs

Do you find yourself drifting away from the scene?
Gemintronic replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Maybe the scene is actually: * People who focus on collecting * People who focus on systems and games produced "back in the day" only * People who enjoy all content new and old. There are blurred lines like those who wont collect loose carts. Or, people who will buy new games only if they're arcade perfect ports. People who shun emulation, etc.. But basically I recognize there are lines. It may be easy to cringe at the part of the scene you're not into. But, I think at that point one has to become either more focused or more open. -
Do you find yourself drifting away from the scene?
Gemintronic replied to Keatah's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Having shade thrown around about the miracle that we even HAVE new games makes me question the scene for sure. If you don't like a new game don't buy it. If you care and don't like a game then provide feedback. If you love your system be happy developers are making new games. UPDATE: I guess I should make it clear I'm not talking about you personally. Just responding to the example. Things like that kill the scene from the inside. -
I don't think assuming the owners are OK is a good way forward. Like I said: why doesn't the original poster just double check the license? Shareware, freeware or public domain should be AOK. If digital copies cannot be bought then dump it yourself. Being %100 percent legitimate is not always convenient.

Which Game is The Worst DLC Offender?
Gemintronic replied to Classic Pac's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Most people disagree with me. Heck, they even call me "Grandpa" for calling Blizzard out. Blizzard continued adding content to PS4 and Xbone versions of Diablo III. Not just bug fixes. I wouldn't be pizzed if they made the next gen console versions completely separate games. Instead they ditched part of their paying customer base. Same game should have same content. -
If the original poster wants to be %100 sure then.. ..can't you just choose to download public domain and shareware titles? I mean, check the games license and then add it to your library? Not saying it doesn't take Googling and research. But, that's the way I do it. Not hating. Just wondering why this wasn't part of the answer. UPDATE: If they mean firmware/bios then I'm wondering if there's a utility to back up your own firmware/BIOs for the 8 bit computers.

I tried compiling at 4k and 8k (making sure 4scores was in bank 2) just fine. Thank you! bblint tried to object. But, I think that was just bblint being bblint. Stella didn't have a problem running the resulting ROMs. [8/20/2018 7:48:37 PM] bblint found the following errors in starcatcher.bas warning(): Found 1 "for" loops and 0 "next" loop-endings. warning(): Found 0 commands that use end, and 2 "end" commands.
