  1. I'm with ls650 - don't worry too much about it myself... Playing the game is the thing, though strangely enough, I have more "complete" Lynx games in my collection than in any other. There are some games that for nostalgic reasons I want to own complete, however... For instance, I recently wanted to play Dracula X Rondo of Blood; playing the ROM on my GP2X for free made a lot more sense than dropping $100 for the game and another $200 for a PCE Duo on Ebay to me, so that's what I did... anyway, I loved it, and when the PSP version is released, I'll buy it in a heartbeat! Other fave series like Final Fantasy or Metal Gear get me the same way... But generally, the box and manual aren't that important to me - like Shakespeare said, the play's the thing!
  2. I thought you could only play two players surfing? I've done that lots, but four players would be radical! Anyway, I landed a Quintuple today - it said "Unreal!!! 360!!!" - I was pretty excited! It's great to play this system again - California Games is the perfect "20 minutes to blow" kind of game. Waiting for my wife in the parking lot while she's shopping for shoes has never been so much fun!
  3. Geeze, when I was twelve it was 1974 - I was playing with Major Matt Mason and Johny West action figures, and building models of the Apollo and Soyuz space capsules... When I wasn't doing that, I spent most of my time on my bike or in the fields. ...and NOBODY had a computer when I was 16 years old... but I distinctly remember some of my friends had Pong machines around that time...
  4. I can spin Quadruples until I'm dizzy, but though I think I've been pretty close a couple times, I've never managed to land a Quintuple... Has anyone else? Also, I'm wondering what range your high scores are in that event - I just jumped and turned my way to 8,360 points tonight, but I've run higher than that a couple times...

    Where to buy?

I just bought a brand new in box original issue Lynx I set from Best Electronics for $90 + shipping!! I couldn't believe these guys actually had the original big, grey box package with California Games, the Comlynx Cable and an AC Adapter, NEW, like untouched!! To quote Dusty, "It's freaking awesome!!" This is exactly what I wanted, and I'm thrilled! I can't wait to get it and pass the Lynx II to my son...
  6. Not really a response to your question, but good news none-the-less for anyone running a firmware over 3.03. There been a new exploit discovered in Lumines (similar to the GTA:LC exploit) that allows unsigned code to be run in any PSP up to and including ver. 3.50, which means that a 3.50 downgrader is likely due in the near future... Check it out: Lumines exploit news on DCEMU.CO.UK
  7. I long ago stopped trying to explain to newbs how to do this stuff. Basically, everything anyone needs to know to do anything with the PSP is here: MaxConsole.Net PSP Forums They don't treat you with kid gloves, so your feelings may be hurt if you ask a stupid question, but there's a lot of step-by-step stuff to help you muddle through... As for MAME and NeoGeo emulation, I run those on my GP2X (see the GP32X Site for the real dirt on this system, including info on the Atari 2600, 7800, 800/5200, Lynx and ST emus that run on it) - the correct screen ratio and excellent emulators available for that system make it my de facto classic gaming handheld - basically, if it's 2D, the GP2X probably does it better than the PSP...

    Where to buy?

GoAtari (http://www.goatari.com/) seem to have a fair bit of stuff; I've never used them myself, but they maintain a strong Ebay presence and have good feedback....
  9. The Dreamcast is the only console that we currently own two of, both of which are hooked up (to different TVs, of course). It's always been a household favorite for fighting games, shooters, and my daughter thinks Crazy Taxi is the best game ever made, Seriously! (which reminds me, she starts driving lessons this year ) Anyway, a great system, with a lot of great games - Trigger Heart Excelsior is another great shooter that's available on import, btw... I got mine from Play-Asia.
  10. hehehe... well, ya... but excepting the "must play holding Lynx sideways" thing (which never bothered me) you could make those exact same criticisms of half the games available on the Lynx... What I liked about Raiden on the Lynx: + nice, big sprites - I thought the graphics were pretty good + holding the game sideways gives a proper shooter screen ratio for a vertical scroller... + solid difficulty/challenge (well, for me, but I still haven't beaten Ikaruga) + it was another decent shooter for a system that doesn't have enough of them in its library, and it came out well after the system was abandoned by Atari
  11. I'm looking for a Lynx I - the very first model. Should be a PAG-0200 or -0201 model number, MADE IN JAPAN. I really want one in excellent condition; no paint chips, no "banding" on the screen playing on battery power, nice clean battery compartment, and no screen scratches. I already have a couple of Lynxes, but this is my fave model, and I intend to play it, so I'd be happy to take one without the box and docs if that's what's available... I'm in Ottawa, Ontario. Paypal Verified. Long-term perfect Ebay feedback under userid jimeina on Ebay. PM me or fire me an email at jimi.big9z AT ncf DOT ca thanks!
  12. There were so many factors; certainly, DOS and Windows were a part of it. I think too that the evolution of clone hardware on the IBM platform made that platform more interesting and affordable for the hobbiests that made up a large part of the home computer market (and who influence that market to a significant degree in their roll as "tech guru" for friends and family). Add to that the (re)rise of excellent home consoles (starting with the NES and really moving into the 16-bit era) and game enthusiasts had fewer and fewer reasons to invest a large chunk of their disposable income in a home computer like the Amiga... By the time SoundBlaster brought FM Synth sound to the PC, I remember thinking that the writing was on the wall for the dedicated home computer; the economy, flexibility and upgradability of the PC was too much to ignore...
  13. cool... did you put it together from all Warmoth or USA Guitars parts and then have it painted? Or is it a refinished... what??? It ain't a Dinky or a Baretta, but I can't see the headstock very well in that shot... Still, looks cool... What's the pup? Do you float the Floyd?
  14. Congrats! Nothin' like a new Lynx... Raiden's fun but HARD - but if you're into the whole shooter thing then Zarlor Mercenary and Gates of Zendicon will keep you blasting for hours. Klax is a great game if you like that kind of action/puzzler, and the Lynx version might be the best one ever coded for a home system. Chip's Challenge is also a lot of fun. Todd's Adventures in Slime World would probably be considered another "must have" for Lynx collection... There are many others, of course, but those would be my first picks...
  15. Hey, that's pretty cool! Reminds me of the one I won a couple days back. I picked up a TurboExpress and a handful of games a while back, and I've been watching Ebay for a decent deal on a TG16 - I think it's a good deal at $65 to find a system in great shape with some games... I'm very pleased with the auction I won, too.
  16. Well, I think you're right to pass on RoboSquash - it's basically 3D pong, and though it can be fun with two players, it gets tired pretty quickly alone... I actually really like Gauntlet when playing with three or more friends - it can be pretty tough and gets crazy quick, but again it can wear thin quickly when playing alone... Zarlor Mercenary is one of my favorite Lynx titles - I say that's a "must have", and Xenophobe can be lots of fun. You're right that Rygar can be repetitive, but you feel pretty good when you beat it! So those would be my three recommendations...
  17. Well that's not something I've seen before... thanks for the pics... How does the "Howdy" unit differ from a regular Lynx? Special connections on it?
  18. One thing I don't understand is why you never hear anyone mention that THERE WERE TWO VERSIONS OF THE LYNX I? The original version was Made In Japan and had the D-pad attached to a round disc at the base - the entire pad, the cross with the disc, would move. The second version was released after a price drop but before the Lynx II came out; it was Made in Taiwan and had a different, cross-style D-pad that protrudes through a raised circle base that's molded into the body, and seemed to lose paint at an unreasonable rate - the finish would wear off the unit just from normal use, which was not something the first version seemed to suffer from. I've owned both, though I only have one of the original Lynx I's currently. Still, despite the fact that they are generally of the same design, they're noticeably different. Here's a couple pics snatched off of Ebay that show the difference in the D-Pad quite well: This is the Lynx I Mark 1 - MiJ This is the Lynx I Mark 2 - MiT (edit to include place of manufacture)
  19. In a level you have to start the shield and go through the floor to a hidden door (you'll loose the laser but should be alive enough to proceed to the gate) Here's what google gave me : go to Level 15 (TRYX). When it begins, turn on the shield and go through the bridge right in front of the first artillery car. If you make it through, position the ship under the bridge and keep it there until you pass the first pylon. Upon passing it, move the ship to the bottom of the screen immediately, until your past the stalactite. As soon as you pass it, move the ship back under the bridge and you will make it by the final pylon. If you succeed in clearing the obstacles, the warp will be there waiting. Is this the level where you shoot the developers' heads as they fly through space? I seem to remember that being the hidden level for this one, but it's been years since I played it...
  20. It would actually cost you less nowadays to find a used GameCube and the base Gameboy Adapter for that than to go after a Wideboy, I'm sure... I think I paid $60CDN for my 'Cube and Gameboy adapter, combined, and there are lots of them out there.
  21. Well, I recently reacquired a Lynx and a handful of games, so I decided I'd stop lurking and register just to post in this thread! The Lynx was always one of my favorite systems back in the very early '90s - I had a couple friends who owned systems as well and we'd sit around the apartment on Saturday afternoons jacked into the wall sockets and Lynxed up playing Gauntlet and Warbirds and drinking beer till it was time to hit the town and look at girls and play Crystal Castles and Black Tiger on the coin-op tables in the bar and drink beer... but I digress... Anyway, my Lynx Top Ten: 1. California Games 2. Zarlor Mercenary 3. Gauntlet 4. Todd's Adventures in Slime World 5. Blue Lightning 6. Rygar 7. Shadow of the Beast 8. Klax 9. Chip's Challenge 10. Gates of Zendicon
