No they don't. He's taking a risk that someone out there will pay way to much for these systems. I personally hope he buys all these systems and then chokes on 'em when he can't sell 'em.

Ya, they really do. If someone can break into a niche market like Odyssey, or Channel F, or something small enough that one asshole with enough money can prevent new gamers from coming to that console... then yeah, that pretty much ruins it for a lot of people. It's not like you find an Odyssey in a flea market, or even traded on boards like these that often. Sadly, as is being discussed in another thread, eBay is pretty much the only way to get a lot of titles and consoles.

I'd sure like to have a boxed Air Raid but I can't afford the $30k that one went for a few months ago. That's an insane price IMHO but that's the going rate. Oh well, no use crying over it.

The difference is the market actually put that value on it. The actual market value of a typical Odyssey is more like $125.

Mortal Kombat II: The entire MK series sucks IMHO. I don't like herky jerky motion capture fighting games. They're a dumb 90's gimmick.

    All credibility lost, IMHO! :P

It sounds like games on 32X that aren't Kilobri just don't fit your personal tastes. That doesn't make it a pile of shit. It just makes it not that ideal for you. You have to admit, most of the games you dismissed are generally considered to be classics. I don't like Final Fantasy IV or Phantasy Star, because I hate turned based RPGs. Doesn't mean they're piles of shit, they're probably as great as everyone says. Just not for me.

    Zaxxon: F*** Zaxxon.

No argument here. Fuck that game.

  3. I just realized that I forgot to post the shot of my Odyssey2 collection. What was I thinking? Fixed. And while I was at it I added Odball pics. More can be found on the link in my sig.

I really need to add some new pics! I still need to get better pics of my Sega stuff, and at least add a pics of my new Spiders arcade cabinet.

  4. Well, I found a website that does game boards on the cheap. Unfortunately, they don't fold, so this is going to be a big box - one that I have to figure out how to make.

    Game development is going smoothly.

Project Mentis is evolving opposite of Odball.

With Odball, I first produced the gamecard, and then built a game around that. With project Mentis I am starting with the basic gameplay mechanics, and an incorporating the gamecard(s) into it.

To save on costs, Project Mentis may use an existing gamecard, but I am strongly considering a repro of one of the 1973 gamecards. That probably won't happen. I want this game to be under $30 this time. Not $65-$80 like last time.

So far Project Mentis will play a lot like a board game. Again, this is in stark contract to Odball, which was envisioned to be more of an arcade/action game.

At this stage, Project Mentis has three play modes: single player, two player, and "board game." The board game mode does not require an Odyssey to play. I figure if I am going through the trouble of making a Odyssey-style board game, I may as well make it playable "offline."

That's all for now. I hope to be ready to ship a first run sometime around March 2011.

  5. Kolibri isn't that good. There are other 32X games that easily eclipse it.

    Such as?

Knuckles' Chaotix, Star Wars Arcade, DOOM, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racer, Shadow Squadron, Mortal Kombat II, and Blackthorne. There are other games as good as Kolibri as well, such After Burner II, Space Harrier, Metal Head, 36 Great Holes, World Series Baseball, Spider-man, and NBA Jam. I don't personally like these titles, but Tempo, Zaxxon's Motherbase, WWF Wrestlemania, Toughman, Pitfall, and Primal Rage, and T-MEK are generally well received. Basically, your level of shit talking isn't justified, and quite frankly is old hat.

  6. I need some recommendations for the Genesis. I already have some titles, and would like some cool platform or puzzle games. Here's what I have so far:

Animaniacs, BlockOut, Bubsy II, Bugs Bunny, Caesar's Palace, Columns, Cool Spot, Cyberball, Dr. Robotnik, Ecco, Garfield, Hard & Race Drivin', Jungle Book, Klax, Pac-Man 2, Ristar, Roadblasters, all the Sonic games, Taz, Trampoline Terror, ToeJam & Earl 2, both Vectormans, Arcade Hits, & Virtual Pinball. Any stand out games I'm missing?

Just look at my sig and see the games I have that you don't. :D

  7. The 32X overall is a pile of shit.

Kolibri and Blackthorne are the only two games in my 32x library that I even play...

and I have the whole library. somewhere. in a box because they all suck. DOOM for the 32X is RETARDED. Farty music, grainy graphics, blah.

Kolibri is like an Amiga game. It reminds me of Agony. Its like Agony + Ecco the Dolphin or something.

If you find a 32x for like 5$ get it, but if its 20$ or more, screw it. Youre better off spending the 20$ on mcdonalds or something

Kolibri isn't that good. There are other 32X games that easily eclipse it.

  8. My bad guys, the gun I have is the blue corded light gun that came with lethal enforcers. I misspoke and research tells me it should have been called the Justifier. Anyway, I do not have the super scope and I was wondering if the game would work with the gun I have.

    Sorry for the confusion.

    bah

No, games that require the Justifier on either Genesis or SNES won't work with either the Super Scope 6 of the Menacer because the Justifier is an actual light gun, which is required to play the game.

  9. In the 90's early 2000's I was'nt really collecting/selling retro at the time although I kept stuff I owned since bought.

What where games and systems going for then?

What were ebay, thrifts, and flea markets like for collectors and sellers at the time?

I can only imagine what types of treasures were found and how much money one could have made at the time.

    Thanks for any replies.

I started in the early 2000s. The difference is that most of the pawn shops are out of bins of games, big retailers like Gamestop no longer carry retro games, availability hasn't really gone down, but eBay has changed in a way to make it more of a BIN site than auction site, thereby artificially driving prices above what the market would set in a typical supply/demand situation.

  10. well that makes it a rare collectible :)

The timers themselves are mass produced and cost a $1.70 each. I kind of like them better because they're easier to see, and the rounds last longer. But there are only 26 produced copies of Odball. I don't know if I'll be making more. But keep an eye out for Project Mentis.

  11. First of all I would make it extremely clear to the seller you want the box unmarked. You must understand there are those like me who think the boxes are just boxes to be used.

    ^George

Not only that, but imagine you purchased an item from a manufacture. Would the manufacture ship it in just the packaging? No. Is that how they ship to retailers? No. Then eBay sellers shouldn't do it either, especially if they're using the inclusion of the packaging as a selling point.

  12. So, I bid on and won a vintage Sears telegames Jokari/hockey sports system with the original box and controllers, got it in the mail today and GUESS WHAT??!?!? The guy shipped it in it's original box with tape and labels all over it! I am pissed! It is ridiculous, dont people think that we collect this stuff? and maybe want the box in good shape? Have you guys experienced this?

Dude, for real. Same shit happened to me. I won a Magnavox Odyssey that was complete with the original shipping box, and the dude taped it up and stuck all kinds of labels to it. I almost sent the seller an email to make sure he was going to ship the whole thing in another box, but I refrained because I thought, "Who in their right mind would tape up and damage a 36 year old box that was one of the selling points?" Jerks.

  13. What's the deal with the 32X expansion? Is it worth it to play? I haven't seen many great reviews for it. Limited number of games, and most aren't original.

Does it fit properly on a model 1 Genesis?

Totally worth it. There are only 36 US releases plus three imports, making it really easy to collect for. Games like Knuckles' Chaotix, Kolibri, Star Wars Arcade, DOOM, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racer, Shadow Squadron, and Blackthorne make the system worth owning. Not to mention what's probably the best home version of MKII. Golf and NBA Jam are pretty good too.

And, yes, it fits into a Model 1 Genesis perfectly. For a Model 2 it requires a spacer. If you get a 32X be sure to get a complete one. It requires special cables to work that are often missing from sets sold online. The Model 1 and Model 2 use different ones.

  14. Now taking orders! :)

    http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/175671-mentis-cohorts-four-odyssey-games-in-one-now-taking-orders/

    Mentis Cohorts Q&A

Stuff people have been asking, stuff you may want to know, and stuff I just feel like telling you.

Q: What kind of game is this?

A: The game is a strategy board game that utilizes the Odyssey to enhance game play.

Q: What Game Card does Mentis Cohorts use?

A: It utilizes Game Card #5.

Q: What modes of play are there?

A: Mentis Cohorts is really four games in one. The first is a versus strategy game called Mentis Strike that utilizes the board game and the Odyssey. The second is a versus mode called Mentis, which is the same as Mentis Strike, but without the Odyssey. The third is called Mentis Siege that is a single player game similar to Breakout utilizing the Odyssey and game the pieces. The fourth is called Ego Mentis which utilizes only the game pieces and is a single player puzzle game similar to peg solitaire. I really feel that Mentis is a solid strategy board game on its own. Mentis Strike enhances it to a level that is much more fun for gamers and adds a whole new dimension of strategy and gameplay. Even Mentis Siege is sold enough to stand on its own as the world's first single player Odyssey game. This collection is really solid.

Q: What does the game include?

A: The game includes an 18"x18" vinyl game board, nine black glass tiles, nine white glass tiles, instruction sets for each game, a draw string bag for the game pieces, two vellum screen overlays (A4 size), and a black 3"x24" tubular case with Odyssey style graphics. Oh, and a certificate of purchase, of course.

Q: How much will the game cost?

A: The cases and the boards are cheaper when more are ordered. I am estimating that the final price will be something like $55 with shipping. That may go down if there are a good number of pre-orders. The game board itself is the most expensive component at almost $40 for a single one. With enough orders I can negotiate that price down.

Q: Will Mentis come with Game Card #5?

    A: No.

    Q: Why not?

A: Producing PCBs (printed circuit boards) is expensive. By not going that route the cost is reduced significantly. Game Card #5 is extremely common. If you have an Odyssey but not Game Card #5, you can usually find them very cheap, or make one out of a card and some tin foil.

    Q: I don't own a Magnavox Odyssey, should I buy this game?

    A: Yes.

    Q: Why?

    A: Because I said so.

    Q: ...

A: Oh, okay. In all seriousness, when I produced Odball a number of people contacted me and expressed and interest, but regretted that they couldn't find an Odyssey at a decent price. I designed Mentis with those gamers in mind as well. The game is fully functional as a stand alone board game. The Odyssey merely adds enhanced game play. I wish Odyssey and Odyssey^2 game designers had this philosophy in mind when they created games like Invasion and Conquest of the World.

Q: Why did you make Mentis? What was the process?

    A. Well, for one, lot of people were asking me for a follow up to Odball. Mentis has taken an opposite development course than Odball had. With Odball, I decided years ago that I would produce Game Card #11. Not knowing how it would function, I designed a game based around how the card worked. Initially, the game was designed to be too much like Basketball. Not owning the 1973 games, I didn't know it at the time. Once I realized that I had to go back to the drawing board. The difference between Game Card #8 and Game Card #11 was very slight; the action performed by the reset button. I can see why Magnavox decided not to produce #11. However, I focused on that one difference and built what became Odball around it.

Q: That's great, but what about Mentis?

A: I was getting to that... I had originally intended to only make a single player game, since there had never been one, and I felt that there needed to be. As I got into it further, it was too irresistible to fully flesh it out as a two player strategy board game. Unlike Odball, with Mentis I designed the game first, and then figured out a way to incorporate the Odyssey. Pretty much the exact opposite. I decided early on that I was going to use an existing Game Card, or reproduce Game Card #12. Because of the aforementioned cost of PCBs, I decided it's best to use one that came with Odyssey. Game Card #5 fit the needs perfectly.

Q: How long did the project take?

A: Not long at all. About two weeks?

Q: Will it contain an easter egg?

A: Yes, and I think this one will be more obvious than the one in most copies of Odball.

Q: When will Mentis Cohorts ship?

    A: On or about 2/14/11.

Q: How will you ship it?

A: I'll wrap the tube in brown shipping paper so as not to damage it.
