  1. I just found this post one the NEXGAM forum:

    http://forum.nexgam.de/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=75652

I dont know if its for real, but they posted a list of enhancements that AVP CD would have over the original, and they were aiming for an improved engine, that, instead of being similar to Wolfenstein 3D like the original, they were aiming for something ala Doom. So, Rebellion really tought it was posible to get AVP image quality and enviroments like in Doom, in a single package.

Reading the list of improvements they were planning, it really seemed like a dream come true!

Then again, i have no clue were they got that list, or if it is for real. And also, we will never know if Rebellion was really up to the task of getting so much out of the Jaguar ;) . Or maybe its a list of improvements that a suit at Atari wanted for the sequel, without taking into consideration the Jags true capabilities :-D !

  2. Couldn't edit, so here's more detail to expand.

First up, you lose RAM for the CD-Bios (admittedly, not much)

You also lose ram for the CD-buffer - because you can't just load from the CD directly into memory at a given address. It needs to shuffle via a buffer.

As you lose out on storage from the ROM space, you in effect have to design a less complicated game with MUCH lower memory constraints, as you have to shuffle things in and out.

It's much slower to fetch data from CD than ROM. Along the order of 'Please Wait a few seconds' instead of instant access. So you can't dynamically spool assets in during gameplay.

While the CD is spinning around doing it's thing, you lose control of the DSP - because that's how you control the CD. There goes one of your RISC processors.

Basically, unless you want to play Myst or have a really small game footprint, it is a far worse option for development.

Thats really interesting, i already knew about a couple of the disadvantages you mention, though. I understand that at the end of the day, you can get better performance out of the Jag on cart format that in cd format.

But i was thinking about a really well optimized engine for the CD unit, like Hover Strike cd, Iron Soldier 2 cd and Battlemorph. Those games run at least as well, or better than their cart counter parts, while adding a lot more content to the games, than posible on the small cartridges from back in the day. So, given those examples, i dont see why you couldnt get an enhanced Aliens VS Predator engine on cd, that took advantage of the massive amounts of space on cd. Or even better, a cart/cd combo!

  3. Finally, after about two decades of wondering were i read about Pong 2000, i finally found that sneaky magazine on my basement. I have never seen anyone on the internet mention anything about this game, and often wondered if i had imagined reading about it back in the day, but finally i have proof.

I always tought i had read about it on a "Game Players" issue, but i was wrong, it was a september 1995 issue of a magazine called "VIDEOGAMES". I will post a scan of the article here, sorry for the crappy quality. And will also write what it says right here:

    THE RETURN OF PONG?

Its no secret that Atari is updating a lot of its classic games on the Jaguar, using mind-blowing graphics and adding the word "2000" to the name. You already know about Defender 2000 and Breakout 2000, but get ready for Pong 2000. So far, the designers at Atari have the idea only on paper but the game should be truly revolutionary. Not just because of the gameplay and the graphics, but because of what Atari has planned for Pong--as the new mascot for the Jag. You heard it right, Pong will be a living breathing character. Details are sketchy thus far, but here is what i was able to discover: the loveable Pong is a boy cursed with being made of rubber like a super ball--he bounces and attacks his oponents relentlessly--but he truly wished he were a real boy. The gameplay consists of a 3-D platform game with puzzle-solving skills as well as the satisfaction of a good shooter (courtesy of Pongs powers). Pong must save the Earth from being used and destroyed by colossal aliens in an intergalactic video game. In addition, he must save his girlfriend from the evil king Voidoid, and his army of Paddle soldiers. Atari is keeping a tight lid on this project because the gameplay is so revolutionary. But i have got the inside track and will be feeding you the exclusive story as it develops.

What do you thing, guys, is this BS?. Even as a kid back then, the whole thing seemed kinda weird to me, i mean, the story is laughable, but then again thats how stories usually are on mascot games. I dont remember ever reading other issues of this magazine, so i cant coment on how reliable they were, some mags from the era used to write blatant lies, just to print something unique. And so i never got to know anything about this Pong 2000 again. I even got myself thinking for a while that it might have been an april fools joke, but the issue dates from september 95, so... And you know what, now that i re-read it a bunch of times, i kinda dig the whole thing, could have made for a cool game for the Jag.

Now, maybe the most diehard Jag enthusiast know more about this game, and i would love to find more about it.

  4. Wow I didn't know the VB could do those kind of graphics

Yeah, i am very impresed by that video of the demo. I have always been a fan of the Virtual Boy, so i really enjoy when consoles that get so much hate, get to showcase what they could really do. That 3dish effect on Dhalsims level, when the elephants closer to the screen overlap the playable characters is pretty neat.

  5. What the hell is going on! Now the freaking VRBoy (which i love) has SF2 running on it, and the Jaguar still doesnt. Something needs to be done about it.

VRBoy SF2 is very impresive, i really like the Virtual Boy, and seeing this impressive work makes me really happy. Here is the link for anyone who might be interested:

Now, about that raptor engine... so far we have only seen it used on fairly simple (but impressive on their own ways) games, but how good would it be handling something like Super SF2 Turbo?.

  6. Gadget, just hypothetically, is there a version of Space Harrier that you could port to lynx? That would be uber cool. I'd be glued to lynx for days!

Space Harrier and Outrun on the Lynx = Dream come true.

  7. Ah, yes, i didnt remember those videos anymore. I had already seen Galax3D and KylrByte, but dont remember having seen the one called Lattack. Pretty cool.

    Thanks for the link swapd0.

  8. Is there any chance that some of the 3D Stooges work will ever get shared with the Jag comunity. Some images, videos, even resources. I mean its been years since they cancelled their Jag stuff, it would be very cool by them if they shared anything at all.

I know the circmstances under which they left this froums, but a lot of time has gone by, so i said, "hey a should ask, maybe someone here close to Gorf and the guys knows if at one point they may accept to share something". Sure, they dont have to it all, and they are on their right not to do so.

Just wondering, its been a boring day, and have been remembering about Gorfs days on this forums.

  9. The reason Game Gear is choppy because it has to print one of the character on the tilemap and the other character as sprites, and this system is limited to 64 8x8 or 8x16 sprites with scanline limitation of 8 sprites. Mortal Kombat for the Lynx will definitely better than the Game Gear version.

Thats awesome to know, Lynx sprite powa for da win!!!!!!!!

Also, we all have noticed that unlike the wimpy consoles like the Game Boy and Game Gear, the Lynx actually features parallax scrolling in many of its games. Does parallax scrolling eat away much RAM?, it shouldnt be one of the priorities of this project, but if posible, why not, right?

But i totally agree with 108 Stars, gameplay comes first, so the priority should be sprite animation.

Also, we may not have Matt Furniss to do the awesome music like he did on the Megadrive port, but we have Der Luchs!

  10. Game Gear(Gameboy version too I believe) version of MK and MK2 use 1 opponent as tile, and the other sprites due to it sprite limitation, which is why the game is choppy.

Are the Lynx sprite capabilities considerably better than the GGs, so that we could see a considerable improvement on the choppy gameplay?. Its already been mentioned that the extra ram on the Lynx compared to the GG is gonna make the game a bit smoother, but also the extra sprite power is gonna help in that regard too, right?.

So, more ram overall, using smaller sprites so that the usage of said ram can be further optimized, and more sprite power...seems like this project could end up playing way better than the GG and GB ports.

Der Luchs, you music is awesome!

  11. Cant believe this is actually happening, very cool even if it only ends up as an experiment. Like most here, i really wished to see a Lynx port of MK on the Lynx to compare to the other portable versions.

Since the Lynx is more powerful than the Gamegear, can we by default expect it to be smoother than the GG port. What technical advantages would the Lynx hardware benefit a MK port compared to the GG port?

MK on Lynx sounds really cool, but right now i am more interested on the Karate fighting game thats in the works and the other more modern one that 108 Stars has been mentioning. I would like to know if that more modern one is planned to have "realistic" sized sprites of go to the super deformed look that works so well on the Neo Geo Pocket fighting games.

  12. As a long time Jag fan, this homebrew project was by far the most interesting, due to the amazing graphics, showing to Jag haters what the systems could really do. Also being a 3d rpg made it even more interesting.

Well, at least we have those amazing videos that Owl shared with us

Thanks Atari Owl!, good luck with your life projects, and like you say, who knows, maybe at one point you will be abe to work on AOP again.
