If you have the Atari SH204 or Megafile series you will need a MFM or RLL type HD. Some latter ones allow a SCSI drive but I heard its problematic to get working. I should have been more clear. The case is a kind of generic one. It has the proper SCSI adapter for the 1040 ST. The drive in it has gone bad. It was a SCSI 1, Segate 40 or 80 meg. These seem hard to find. I'm looking for an alternative drive that I can pop in the case and be back in business. (That is if I can get a replacement power supply-but that's a separate issue) Well you are in luck, if it was indeed SCSI just drop in another SCSI 1 HD, usually under 1GB will work just fine. I would get a 100MB, 250 or 500MB and that should be perfect, 1GB might be pushing it. Does it have a ICD SCSI host adaptor in it? I'm not sure what the adapter is but it worked perfectly with the now failed Seagate ST 1096N 50 pin SCSI 1 drive.

I have the same model. If you really do have an "extra" power supply that would be great. That is very thoughtful of you to offer. If the offer still stands how shall we proceed? My 1040 ST apparently will need a new power supply as I can not figure out how to repair it. Anyone know where I can get one of these or a suitable replacement? Other PS's must also work but I don't know the details needed to choose an appropriate one or how I would re-wire it to the ST connector. I can't be the only one that has had a power supply problem. I imagine a machine of this age has many users seeking new power supplies. Unfortunately, nothing currently on eBay. Suggestions? Thanks!

What kind of hard drive will work in an external case formerly used with my 1040 ST. The drive has stopped working. It was an older SCSI 1.

It's sounding like the power connector has a broken or lose solder joint inside on the power supply board. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get inside and look at the solder connection of the IDC connector (I believe that is what its called) to the power supply board. There just might be a small stress fracture that justs needs to be resoldered. Glenn That sounds like it matches the symptoms. I did a cursory look at the board. I guess it's time to go back in and take a closer look. Thank you for the suggestion Atarifan49. I'll post back with update.

I have an 1040 ST with what I gather might be a common problem. It seems related to the power supply. The machine works fine except it wont stay powered on. I have to hold or support the power cord where it connects to the back of the computer (power supply). It has gotten worse and now will only stay on if I firmly lift the cord up in back. I can do some soldering if I knew what the problem is. Probably many possibilities but I think I remember reading that this was a common issue, hopefully with a simple solution. I welcome any ideas.

It could not be C9 with those numbers, so I lifted the label and underneath was a C2. Remowilliams, I wonder if I might trouble you for the numbers on C2 from the schematic? I think I can make out a 222 on one side and 400 volts on the other. Can you verify from the schematic? Thank you for your effort!

I need to replace a small pinkish red colored pancake capacitor pulled from an atari 1040st power supply. The lead was broken. It is the only thing wrong with the computer. Any ideas what to replace it with and where to find one? I took it to Radio shack. What has happened to that store? No one had a clue about the capacitor but they felt strongly that I needed a new cell phone and provider.

Followed instructions and got part way. I partitioned the drive (at least it seems to partition). But I can not access the drive and can't install the driver. It shows partitions and asks where to install driver but then says can not install driver in that destination. It does not matter what partition I select ....same result. Any other thoughts?

Long story short... I have an external case that I removed a functioning 50 MB Seagate 1096stn (I think) drive from and tried to replace it with a 4 gig Quantum fireball (pulled from a mac). I have tried everything I can think of to get it to work with my 1040 st. Can someone explain the process step by step? I will need to format first but the HDX5 utility program tells me no logical drive. I have installed a device from desktop and called it C (HARD DISK). I 've tried to zero, format. partition and nothing. I have tried running AHDI still nothing. Just once I managed to get several boxes to show up when using HDX install. It had letters C thru M I think and they all seem active (not gray). But when I tried to choose C to install driver it said ....you can not install driver in this location. Same with all letters C-M What am I missing here?

Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions. I used Neodesk (since I had it already) and it shows the amount of ram. Now I have to embarrass myself. I should know this but I don't! Here's what Neodesk displays: Memory 4194304 bytes total 3663686 free. What does this really mean? Do I have 2 or 4 megs ram? Don't burn me too bad for this ridiculous question. Edit==== I think I got it! 4 Megs would be 1024 x 1024 x 4 = 4194304 bytes! I have 4 megs ram. Have I got it ? Thanks for the help.

I have another Mega ste that is stamped on the bottom with 2 megs of ram. I am pretty sure I upgraded to 4 megs at some point. Is there a way to determine amount of ram using software? I'm not sure I could tell by taking the computer apart, although I know all slots are filled.

Final update! In fact it was not the power supply. It was simply a bad hard drive. Very strange behavior for a bad drive. No fan or anything! Just dead!! I put in a different drive and it fired right up.

The computer has nothing connected at the moment and does nothing! No fan, no light, no sound, no indication that it is on. I know the fan on the power supply works because I put it in the other computer and it worked fine. I will try your suggestion though. Uhhh, what are socketed ICs? My guess is anything that can be removed from the board without solder connection, but I will wait til verification before doing anything. BTW, thanks for the help!

Update- OK it turns out not to be power supply. I swapped with a working PSU from my other Mega ste and the machine in question still does not work. The power supply in question worked fine in the other computer. Is there another obvious thing to look at for a computer that just stopped working or are there too many variables for a novess like myself to diagnose the problem? I welcome suggestions.....

My trusty ste is dead. It seems like a power supply issue. I have searched everywhere on the net and see very few options short of buying a new board from Best Electronics for $125 bucks. Anyone have any cheaper solutions? Thanks! Edit: Title modified to better reflect topic.
