  1. I think part of the arcade crash had to do with the cost of the games themselves to both the operater and the player. Many of the games were more expensive for the arcade owners so they raised the playing price to .50 and more for some games. Since the games probably all seemed the same to the parents they would be less likely to hand over more money for them.

    I seem to remember reading also that many of the arcades switched to skee ball/skill games because they turned just as much profit and didn't need to be constantly updated. They could also run the tickets for crappy prize scam from skee ball machines that little kids love so much.

    Let's not forget also that arcades were generally loud dark places filled with violent teenage boys. Parents weren't too thrilled to be there. Many store owners probably got tired of kids hanging around if the machines weren't making much profit. I know I got thrown out of many a pizza place in my youth :D


  2. Well Jack did make some bad decisions but we should all remember that we have hindsight on the matter, and hindsight is 20/20. If you just bought a company hemorraging (sp?) money, you'd make drastic changes too. While I mourn the terrible decision not to release the 7800 when it was ready, it probably seemed somewhat reasonable at the time. This was the middle of the big crash after all.

    "The rarity scale is a general indicator of easy or difficult it is to come across a game. The scale starts at 1 (very easy to find) and finishes at 10 (nearly impossible to locate). Thanks to auction sites such as eBay, even extremely rare games come up for auction frequently enough, but these often command a fairly high price depending on the rarity."

     

    So basically, condition of the cart, box or manual isn't the main indicator of rarity. Quadrun is rare regardless of the label condition. Of course it's worth more if you have a nice label, box, etc.

  4. Thanks for this! It's really cool and way easier to use. Now let's hope the community uses this wisely and makes some truly cool hacks to the classics. Basically that's a nice way of saying, "WE HAVE ENOUGH PAC-MAN AND SPACE INVADERS HACKS - DO SOMETHING ELSE!"

  5. I think this sounds great! While I wouldn't condone any of these things in real life, I'll definetely play the game. In fact I encourage everybody out there to only do horrible things in video games and not in real life.

    As for playabilty, all 3 are fun. While my heart belongs to the 2600, if you judge playabilty of the system by the number of good games vs the number of games released, I find the CV to be the most playable.

    Quoting myself here :) I did a little more research and found out the CD32 was built in the Philippines, hence the reason why even though Commodore/Amiga was American, the units couldn't be brought to the US due to the patent infringement mentioned above. In fact the Philippine Gov't seized the warehouse for lack of payment on the factory.

  8. You might have stated which one you are looking at.

    Seriously...just scroll around using the pageup/pagedown keys.

    Pay particular attention to stuff near the end of the file.

    Some pictures may be upside down...simply because that

    is how that game was made to display them.

     

    You'll find them.

     

    Thanks, I actually just read a little further into tha PDF somebody mentioned before and it tells you how to use a diassembler and then note the address' that end in .byte which should make it easier. :)


  9. I've used SHOWGFX and EDITGFX to try and hack some roms but I have a hard time with it. Is there some easier way to figure out which rows of X's represent which graphic element of the game? I basically stare at the chains and try to find stuff but with varying degress of success. Any body know a secret to this or is there an address that graphics definetely start or end at? :?


  10. I got one of those type stores also called GamesUSA. About the same prices as you mentioned. The good thing is, even the rarer games are about $4 so sometimes I find a good deal. They have 7800's refurbished with a joypad controller and 1 game for $44.99. A little steep for my taste.


  11. I think the Activision games look better because it was a smaller group of programmers actually trying to make better games. Atari being a much larger corporation had a bureaucracy (sp?) that probably watered things down, was a slave to marketing idiots and was generally detrimental to game development. Look at the ET/Pac-Man thing. Games ruined by corporate johnnies making ridiculous deadlines.

     

    And flicker doesn't bother me too much either.
