  1. Last night I tried exactly that. I stuck in my Tempest X playstation cd into my tray. I had the cd and video plugins in the plugins folder. I clicked on Run CD-ROM in the File Menu, and it looked like it was trying to read from the disk for a little bit, and then nothing happened.

In the MS DOS screen it showed that it was accessing files from my disk, but nothing happened. I think I have the correct plugins. I have an Acer 56X cd rom drive. I have all the bioses that I need for playstation also. It even plays the bios, and does the intro screen. I've also been able to play those public release "rom" things...like the Zelda Clone Thing works fine.

Can anyone suggest anything I could try to play my playstation cd? Perhaps I'm missing a step or something. I've tried my Activision Classics cd also, but nothing. I'm using ePSXe (Enhanced PSX Emulator).

If I do get this working, it will be great.

What program can I use to rip ISOs from my playstation disks?

  2. PSX doesn't have ROMs, it has CD-Roms :-) You can only download roms from cartridge consoles, because the game data is stored in a Rom chip!... silly people.

If you want to download PSX games, you have to search for ISO's which are basically CD-Rom images that have been ripped from a CD.  You just place a blank CD in your burner and tell it to burn the ISO, and Walla, you have a copy of that game.  If you mod chipped your PSX you can play it directly there, or you can use it on an emulator like Bleem!.

Hmm, I did not realize this. I suppose that I have to somehow "rip" the data from one of my playstation disks, which will render it into an ISO form. Like ripping data from one of my cds makes wave files.

How big is an ISO? I suppose that an ISO could exist on a computer without the cd rom in the tray, and an emulator could play it.

I will figure this out eventually :) Thanks for the additional information.

  3. I guess I can see why there aren't any "roms" out there for playstation.

I accessed my Tekken 2 game, stuck it in my cd-rom drive on my computer, and the:

tekken2.xas file was 560 mb! Holy crap tho.

The Super Mario 64 rom is "only" 8 mb.

I can see that I won't be finding these mammoth roms on the net, and even if I did it would be "worthless" for me to do so.

But I'll bet I can use this emulator to play my tekken2.xas file somehow.

  4. Ok, I hate to ask this, but I simply want to know. I must know.

Has there ever been a working playstation 1 emulator?

And the more important question, has there ever been a working playstation rom (a commercial rom)?

I'm not talking about those public release homemade rom things.

I did a search on Kazaa, and found Atari, Nes,Snes, Genesis, and even N64 emulators and roms, but I've NEVER run across a rom for Playstation 1. I find this rather wierd.

Is it because of the fact that it is cd based and therefore unable to be rendered via emulation?

    Thanks.

  5. In the music world, like classical music...posthumous refers to work published AFTER a composer has died. Like there are several Chopin classical pieces that are Posthumous, meaning that he didn't get around to publishing them before he died, so someone else did it for him.

Posthumous usually means cool stuff that a composer never wanted anyone to know about, because they thought it was bad-or incomplete, or whatever. It becomes more cool because of that reason.

But who knows what Posthumous has come to mean nowdays...

  6. I wouldn't mind sending you my Atari 5200 Voltman. But the shipping costs being as they are for such a crazy heavy item, I'm not sure what to say. Unless you could somehow walk me through how to diagnose my Atari. I do have a digital camera, I could even open up my Atari 5200, and send the pics to you.

Round trip shipping on an Atari would be $30, and that's being conservative. But for curiosity purposes, perhaps it would still be worth it.

To describe again what is happening with the graphics on Super Pac-Man, it appears that all of the fruits have their top halves missing. The regular and super power pellets are completely invisible. At first I thought it was all the same "missing color". Like as if the color was yellow, and my Atari simply would not display that hue. But I already messed with the color pots (I did this for at least an hour, just messing with those two color pots, with a screwdriver).

But this whole thing actually ends up being pretty fun. Diagnosing problems/issues with old systems lets me learn more about how they worked. If money weren't an issue, I'd have the thing to you no sweat :)

  7. Atari graphics suck? I didn't know that :P

I might be speaking tongue-in-cheek if only I knew what that was...hmm

If enough people thought this was true, does it make it so?

If you wear a shirt that says: ATARI SUX

And other people see you wear said shirt...

Would they think you liked Atari in a wierd twist of logic? Or perhaps it would be a normal twist (like a pretzel or something).

If I keep writing long enough, will people come to agree with me more or less?

  8. Really? You'd consider a trade? Of course you must know that there's something mysteriously "wrong" with this Atari 5200. Tho it seems to display all other of my games with what I'd consider correct colors, but I have nothing to compare it to besides emulators.

I have tinkered with the color pots as people suggested, and it did make differences, but none that affected the graphics of Super Pac-Man.

Even tho a trade sounds really good, the shipping would be high on the two items. How would the details be handled? Would I ship mine to you, and yours to me?

  9. I wanted to update everyone about the issue I was having with Super Pac-Man not displaying on-screen graphics. I sent my Super Pac-Man back to Charles, and he attempted it on his Atari, and it displayed all the graphics correctly. He sent me back the Atari cart plus my shipping (very nice) with the new label he chose to use for the carts.

Therefore, the problem lies with my Atari 5200 4 port, and not the cartridge.

Charles is a top notch seller, and very trusted!

  10. A "used" time machine...that sounds impossible even if it were "possible".

If you did travel back in time somehow, it would affect the future, and thus the creation of said time machine.

And oh yeah, I like Atari. I have to say that Enduro does NOT get old...during the past even two weeks, I've played the game more than any of my other games for any system. Got it at Goodwill just like a week ago. And if you think this is a contradiction, it IS.

Ice Hockey for the VCS also doesn't get old, that thing is just phenomenal! Going head to head with another skilled opponent is pure enjoyment!

So I don't even care if they come out with virtual reality, these two games still will be forever awesome no matter what. But that also won't prevent me from getting the higher end systems at a later time.

  11. The burning question is are you going to sell it?

It is the neverending question of whether to keep a rare game because it IS rare, or sell it for loads of cash because it is rare and HAS VALUE.

Far as I know, the game isn't really even very fun to play-but it is really really rare. What are your thoughts about these issues?

  12. If all four ghosts were to always move straight for your position, they would all line up in a single file line, and the game might end up becoming more easy.

I always wondered what makes the ghost monsters in pac-man suddenly switch directions (it seems random).

Also, it is true that there was no pac-man made for the 7800, my bad :)

It would be sorta neat if the ghost monsters could somehow just completely STOP, and would stalk you slowly. You'd think this would make the game impossible, but there are still the power pellets, which would mean you could still eat them.

Do I like pac-man the way it was created before? Of course!!

  13. No he's not, I paid over $500.00 for my ultra rare copy of E.T. and another $1000.00 for the never before seen Asteroids game from Atari.

      :!:  :P  :P

I'll bet that's the blue and ivory label variation ET. I heard that only 11 or 12 were ever made. Circa 1981??

I'm not sure if I'd agree that it is ultra rare. Ultra rare means that only 4 or 5 carts were ever made of any given cart. It would probably be considered in collecting circles as being MEGA rare. Please note this for future reference.

  14. I have about one billion versions of Pac-Man on my computer. I have the following versions emulated:

    2600

    5200

    7800

    Nintendo

    Mame (pac-man, ms. pac-man, etc.)

    Super Nintendo (Ms. Pacman)

Jrok's Assembly pac-man versions (all very very cool).

Namco Museums on Playstation (pac-man, ms. pac-man, super)

So, I know exactly how the ghost monsters usually behave.

Blinky (red) is usually programmed to follow you (shadow). It rarely will ambush

Pinky (pink) is programmed to travel to a place that is about 8 dots ahead of where your pac-man is travelling to (it tries to ambush). It won't even go straight at you sometimes if there is a tunnel that it could take instead (Atari 5200 does this for sure).

Inky (blue) this does a little bit of both Blinky and Pinky, but it isn't very aggressive

Clyde (orange) this one actually seems to try to guard the last dots in a stage. In the meantime, it just journeys around the maze in a set pattern, it never actually chases pac-man.

So my ultimate question is if pac-man could somehow be reprogrammed to be an extremely INTELLIGENT version, where the ghost monsters actually constantly try to come at you and destroy you. Kind of like playing chess, except it is pac-man. The computer tries to outthink you, and catch you. Is there a way to hack the mame version to clone all the ghost monsters to be like Pinky (the most intelligent ghost).

Jrok's version of pac-man doesn't really follow the "rules" of ghost monsters. In his version the ghost monsters will travel upwards from the regeneration box. In the arcade version, and other versions like 5200 and 7800, the ghosts will never go upwards through the tunnels above the ghost monster box (unless they were blue because of power-pellet).

    That is all :)

  15. What do you want to do play games' date=' or worry about the number of 1's and 0's the lump of plastic can churn through its guts in a second?[/quote']

haha, this was a hilarious and accurate statement!

I will repeat myself yet again...modern game companies won't EVER make a system that has graphics and sounds LIKE the old Ataris. I almost wish they would. They will always opt to go bigger and "better". Sometimes, simple games that are easy to learn and play are the MOST fun. The only thing I can hope for is that the "homebrew" scene continues as it has been.

For example: Don't you sometimes think that is is MORE fun to play a race car game like ENDURO, rather than a game like Gran Turismo?

Imagine if a game like ENDURO could be enhanced, and the graphics and sounds would remain the same. Perhaps MORE different weather scenarios, or different tracks.

  16. Don't worry!  We have the classic VGB on the way, and it should be done within the year.  It will cover 1972-1984 and will retain the same format as the 1985-2002 version.  But don't forget that this version contains the 7800, Jag and Jag CD...so it's not all Atari-free.  :)

I'm glad this is the plan. I'm likely gonna sign up to get a copy as soon as this is released, sounds really interesting!

  17. I'll commit a "faus pax" and reply to my own post.

More than just the fishing for the stuff in the wild, this is what I do with the carts next:

I first test their durability by running them over with my car, j/k

Well, I get out my isopropyl alcohol, and I swab the insides of the carts, till they are sparkling. I go on my computer and record the date and location I got them from, or in the very least I record them in my Atari 2600 collection list.

I kneel down by a picture of the great Nolan Bushnell, and recite an arcane verse. I pray that nothing bad will befall my Darth Vader upon using the cart.

Then I just play the game.

  18. I wanted to share some happiness with you guys:

One of my favorite pasttimes has been to go "fishing" for classic stuff at my local goodwill. My routine is to do a sweep of the store, it takes only like 5 minutes, and then I leave. The past few days have turned up nothing. My last score there was an Atari 2600 Trakball, but that was like two weeks ago.

I compare it to fishing, because I never know what I could find there. Today I saw it...a box with cords in it. I knew it was going to be something special. On closer inspection, it was a box full of Atari 2600 stuff, I couldn't believe it. There was some crap sega genesis stuff in there too (like catching a sun fish compared to a walleye).

There were like 12 cartridges, and a whole mess of manuals, and old controllers, and cords. I carefully weeded out everything that I required. I picked up three carts that were in decent shape. I passed up a pong sports because the label was terrible.

I picked up the following for 10 bucks, being it was from "the wild" it was worth it to me:

    Canyon Bomber

    Sky Jinks

    Enduro

    Manuals:

    Activision Cartridge Catalog

    Atlantis Instructions

    Enduro rules and regulations

    Nintendo Control Deck manual

    Ice Hockey Instructions

    Nintendo Zapper Instructions

    Frogger Instructions

    Combat Instructions

    Data Age Catalog

    Pac-Man Instructions

    Defend Atlantis Contest

    Sky Jinks Instructions

    Imagic Catalog

ET Instructions (and a secret map to the million missing carts)

    Haunted House Instructions

I bought all the instructions for just $.99 (that's what they charged me).

I was definitely satisfied with my score. This only makes me want to go "fishing" there even more often. I wonder if it is a good idea to go there right when it opens. Does anyone have a grand "goodwill" strategy they've used in the past. Or some secret phrase I can tell an employee to unlock a secret vault full of goodies?
