I'm just trying to think deeply about this: I think that Quadrun cannot get MORE rare as time goes on, because anyone that currently has a Quadrun is likely taking really good care of it. So I also do not see the "value" of this cartridge going up significantly as a function of time because of this. The question is when will the collectors decide to release their Quadruns back into the market? I see this phenomenon is close to RENTING. These collectors will eventually sell their rare carts, correct? Isn't that one of the points of collecting (at least rare things). There doesn't seem to be much sense going to your grave with bunches of rare carts is it? But since no one can predict that, how do collectors decide to convert their carts into cash? I doubt many collectors give their collections away in the form of inheritance. I realize this is rambling, but some of these questions still bother me from time to time, and I want some explanations, or ideas from others. Thanks

Try the system on a different TV... If it doesn't work on another TV, then it is the system that is the culprit, right?

I used to play "Beyond Castle Wolfeinstein" on my Apple 2 GS. It was a hilarious game. I have it on an Apple 2 emulator. You enter a room, and the enemies yell out "STOP COME HERE!!" (in a really loud horribly distorted voice). You have to show 1 of 5 different passes. If you pick the right one, he will yell HEIL! If you don't, you may have to bribe him with a "Mark", and then he'll let you pass. I like to shoot them point blank when they are talking to me. I pull out my gun and they immediately yell out WERSOL! And most of the time one shot will kill them. I like killing those guys at the desks too. Why is this game so fun I have no idea. But not long ago I played the game for literally an hour, because it was so amusing to mess with those troppers. On the actual version for the apple, I once made it all the way to "Hitler's Lair" with that bomb. I've never "beat" the game, and I always wondered how it ends. Probably something like: Congraturations You a Winner. Or stuff like in Rally X. The Charanging Stage.

This debate is wonderful. When playing Jr. Pac-Man on the real Atari, with my genesis controller, I have a really hard time moving UP when I play the game. I wonder if it is the game or the controller. It will move up, but it doesn't feel right. The difficulty is just incredible, and I LIKE it that way. After a while those ghosts simply want you dead no matter what it takes, and they all come barrelling towards you. Nothing anyone could say about other games made in 1984 would change the fact that last night I was having an awesomely fun time with the game. Knowing full well the "limitations" of the console, this just blew my mind. That's all I can say about it.
-
I just got Jr. Pac-Man in the mail and played it about 5 minutes ago on a real Atari. It is unbelievably good. I completely forgot I was playing an Atari 2600, and the game just sucked me in. This game definitely shows off the possible capabilities of the Atari 2600 big time. Is it really a 128k game? Just when I thought this system could not amaze me any more... a truly special console! Games like Pitfall! and River Raid are intensely fun, but this Jr. Pac-Man has some serious replay value on the 2600. Just my opinion

This is infinitely cool. I wonder if you used supercharger technology to hack into video chess, could you make it play better? It has got to be a programming feat to make a chess game for the Atari 2600. Makes me start thinking of what it could be like to have a chess program for the 5200 and 7800. If everything is equal, which would win? Atari 2600 chess Atari 5200 chess Atari 7800 chess Makes a nice way to truly test the capabilities of each system, doesn't it. Kinda like a "benchmark". You know where I'm going with this...yeah XBOX chess vs. Gamecube chess At least maybe there could be a site where it would list the winners in important matchups. I don't think there is a chess game for XBOX and stuff tho.

Battlezone will win in every category except: Death Screen Weather changes I looked at the website trying to figure out which came first. I'm thinking Battlezone came after Robot Tank. It doesn't say on the site tho. But really none of this makes a difference, I'll likely pick up both sometime. I would probably play Battlezone if I was going to play a tank game on the Atari. And I'd play Robot Tank just to show the death screen to someone.
-
Both these games are definitely good for showing off the Atari 2600. It might be true that it is hard to impress those who grew up on Nintendo, but seriously, where in Nintendo can you find a "death screen" like the one in Robot Tank? Nowhere, it is like the technology is too high to render such a "low resolution" effect. Sometimes "good graphics" can make it impossible to make an effect like this, does anyone agree? Could you have an effect like in Robot Tank on the Super Nintendo? How would it look on it? Would it sound/look the same? I somehow doubt it. Atari simply rocks, just from this effect, nuff said!

The jury has reached a verdict! I just played Battlezone, and I think it is much better for gameplay definitely. I still like the death screen better in Robot Tank than Battlezone. It has a more gritty feel and sound to it. The death screen special effect is what makes the game so appealing. I nearly want to die just to see it. Battlezone is a much better tank game, the enemies are so much better, and its death screen is pretty much like Robot Tank. The cheesy opening tune in Battlezone was kinda hard on my nerves. At least it did have music tho (I guess). So there's my novice game review!

Yes, blasphemer, you will pay homage to the High Atarians! But seriously, what about the fact that I want to collect for Atari more, but simply don't have the funds. The older you get, the more money you got. I wasn't a millionaire as a teenager, so I was unable to get systems or games that I wanted to see. What if it takes me till I'm 35 to get some more nostalgic systems and games? I don't yet even have the funds to get a larger place, to house my collecting interest. It may take me till 40 to do that. See what I'm saying? My dad always told me: "when you get older, and want to buy this stuff, then go ahead". He was thinking I'd outgrow it and develop "better" priorities, and that irritates me. Now I am older, and I've enjoyed seeing some of the games I used to want for the Atari 5200 for example. Just last week I was denied by yet another woman, who just "wants to be friends". I'm trying to get the right priorities in order, but it isn't working. So I continue to enjoy my gaming interests. When I'm 60 I plan to have a classic gaming palace, how's that for a goal? It will take that long just to have enough money to build it.

That last part was of my making.

A wider screen might possibly make it easier, but I think there's that trick of "scrolling an enemy into oblivion". Like you approach an enemy, and then quickly backtrack, thus making them disappear. On the wider version I would assume that this trick would be harder to execute. Being wider, you'd have an advantage against enemies like that Birdo guy that spits eggs at you, because you can see more of the screen. This is making me want to get this Gameboy Advance. I'm thinking a "portable NES". But it looks like they messed with it more than they should have, and it went the way of "Activision Classics" for the Playstation 1. Activision Classics Pitfall! for example looks, feels, and tastes nothing like the real Atari 2600. The sounds are horribly simulated!
-
Speaking in just a technical sense, I would assume that the rom on Gameboy Advance is the exact same as the one on Nintendo 8-bit (NES). That said, the only part about it that makes it "easier" is the save feature mentioned by others. This save feature is much like a "save state" in an emulator. But the rom is left untouched. I suspect that the game runs faster on Gameboy Advance, even having not played it at all, because the technology is better, and there's less slowdown (pixel stuff?) So my answer to your question would be, NO, Gameboy advance Super Mario 2 is as hard/easy as the one for NES, because it utilizes the same rom.

And why the continued hatred towards Bill Gates? To a gamer who cares? Is the XBOX fun to play games on? Or is it not? If it is fun, why? If you had an XBOX hooked into a TV, and knew nothing about Bill Gates, or Microsoft, or any of it-would you like the system or would you hate it? I suspect that you'd like the technology, and at least some of the games would be fun. Does the controller have 9 trillion buttons? You don't like that? Well, from a gamer's point of view, that IS a big deal. So maybe there's a different one you could use. Monopolies are part of capitalism, and laws are made by those in power. Money=power. Nuff said.

From a gamers perpective (me, me!!) I could care less if a company goes bankrupt, seriously. All a gamer cares about is whether games are continuing to be made for their favorite console. I think that's why Playstation 2 was such a great hit. Gamers knew that manufacturers were NOT going to abandon the making of games for the Playstation 1. Is this simplistic? I hope so, because that's all that matters to me. From a gamers point of view, how many total games does the XBOX have? How about the Game Cube? Playstation 2? Which of these will go the way of Dreamcast, and die off completely? I know there are "home brew" games being made for Dreamcast, but somehow that isn't the same as officially released ones. I really wish that the video game industry would just stop making better and better systems, and continue to focus on building libraries for their existing consoles. But that's not the way it works in the business world I guess. I will eventually pick up an XBOX, a Dreamcast, etc. etc., for collecting sake. But I'm not through with Atari stuff yet. I'm starting at the bottom, and working upwards. A nice goal might be to have all the MAJOR systems ever made and maybe 10 games for each. I can't think of any obscure systems, maybe because they are obscure.

Look at the organization. The list is even alphabetized, impressive! Welcome to the world of collecting! Ahha, he is starting to become a label variation guy too! Now come over here for a second...meet the boxed people

I think the "fear" is that a single person could fake out the software, and just hit refresh a trillion times, and artificially boost the view count. I don't know why anyone would want to do this, but if someone were bored enough I'm sure they could generate a huge view count on any topic they wanted to. I think it is nice to see view counts, even those of multiple views from a single person. It will be rare to have someone refresh a topic just to make it look like alot of views. I could sit here all night and click back or refresh on a topic, and probably reach 1000, and get into the stat book for all time. But maybe I don't want to also No changes are needed, but I am just bored enough to want to try to get into the record books for most views to a topic Once it is out of my system, all will be swell again in the world.

Glancing at your forum name I have come to the conclusion that you are the none other than the mysterious Tim Atwood. The one question we've all had is this: are you really paralyzed like NESdestroyer claims? It was posted in a previous thread that you are. Please clear this up for us so that we can know for sure. Maybe Tim doesn't want to discuss it, did that ever occur to you? If your legs were horribly crushed by a tractor at age 6 would you want to answer anonymous questions on a message board like this? Likely his condition is too complicated to go into anyway. It seems that you are focusing on his condition more than the fact that someone has been abusing him on ebay. I feel Tim has been honest about everything, he has no reason not to be. You are implying that his refusal to discuss a possible condition of his, makes him not trustworthy. I do not agree with this line of thinking. When the time is right, and people like you don't continue to hound him about something that is probably an intensely sensitive topic, maybe he will tell us. Can you just be a tiny bit more sensitive?
-
Can you guys think of any other games that have these really super cool effects? I can only think of like Yar's Revenge. The programmer really outdid himself with that death screen. I should disassemble the bin to see if I can figure out how it was done. Artillery Duel was another one where I just love the "death sound", it changes in pitch and tone each time. Sometimes you get this really metallic grating sound. And the funny "glitch" with the "ambulance men" in that game too, where one of them is "left behind".
-
I just tried Robot Tank on my emulator, and I'm definitely gonna pick this one up sometime. What a fantastic "death screen". I had no idea the 2600 could do something so awesome. Very impressed! The game is plenty fun too
-
You make a good point about the glitchy start-up screens, which is why I think I'll have to agree they are 100% accurate. But even so, I think the problem has to do with resolution, like the size of the television screen. The rom may be flawlessly rendered, but if you squish part of the graphics horizontally or vertically, you'll get what I'm saying about Pac-Man. What do you think of the comparison of pacman for mame vs. pacman for Namco Museum Adrian? Or even Ms. Pacman.
-
Take a game like Galaga or Dig Dig, or even Mappy and compare them between mame and Namco. I can't detect many differences. If anything it probably suffers from the exact same thing as pacman, where the screen size/proportions is the critical thing, so that if you were to tip your tv on its side and change the mode. Have you guys tried this turning the tv on its side, and switching the controls? Pacman actually looks ok like this on Namco (but turning your tv to one side messes with the color, for some unknown mysterious reason??)
-
Yes, for shame, how could you miss such a thing! I know the accumulator is the same thing as the A register at least 0100 is a nibble have a grand $E7 .BYTE day!
-
Namco Pac-Man and others in Namco have things that Mame and arcades don't. They keep track of STATISTICS. I love this feature. How many times did Blinky kill you? Pinky? Inky? It allowed you to see how the game was programmed. It showed, for example, that Blinky will have more kills than any, followed by Pinky Inky and Clyde will be tied, but Inky will have more kills. Still, if you turn a small tv on its side, it should look pretty similiar to mame.

Say it ain't so, StanJr! Do you have an Atari 5200? Or perhaps the forum doesn't have enough action in it (this is true of course). So what's the story? It IS rather easy to get all the carts (the main ones anyway) for the Atari 5200. The only challenge is getting workable joysticks (wico, or whatever). My setup is currently flawless for the Atari 5200, and I wouldn't trade it for anything!
