  1. Oh wow, I totally did not put two and two together with your book Lapetino when I just read this post today...

Oh my, when I first saw it at Books-A-Million during my Christmas vacation, talk about impulse buy!

Then after I read the whole thing it made me appreciate Atari even more for what they were and what Atari Age lives on here.

Truly one of the few books in a long time I have actually sat down to read cover to cover, much less admire the amazing artwork from all Atari's super talented art staff from back in the day.

Thank you Tim, thanks for writing that book! (and all the amazing pictures and photos!) It is yet another testament to the legacy of Atari and the culture of it's day, a legend in our time.

It will always be a treasured piece in my home, a piece of history I grew up with. :)

  2. WHOA, horrible circumstances and situation without a doubt Curt! I'm praying you'll pull through this with flying colors though.

I'll keep you and your family in my prayers man, in the meantime, here's to your full and quick recovery! :)

The XM stuffs can wait and will still be here when you're able to return and completely healthy good sir!

  3. INSANE!!! Keep up the awesome work Joe and you too Iesposta!

Just when I think I've seen the apex of programming games for the 2600 here, you guys go and raise the bar AGAIN a little higher haha! Awesome!

  4. I seriously doubt they could have afforded the luxury of 32kb bank-switched ROM chips in 1982.

Hey a man can dream can't he? :P :D You're smashing my dreams good sir, SMASHING THEM TO PIECES! :_( (LOL ;) )

  5. I'd love to see some Double Dragon how too's. I've always felt I was missing something with the game but have never got very good at it... :)

PS: The new update is gorgeous.

Look for my Double Dragon walkthru on Youtube, username, "Rkanum". In a nutshell, master the elbow punch! Good luck!

Awesome updates as usual KevinMos3, thanks man! I'll have to redo my walkthru sometime with your updated hack one of these days! ;)

  6. HOLY COW!!! I just played the latest release and THIS IS AMAZING!!!

    You just blew my mind!!!

I SECOND THIS!!! It's an awesome version of not only the most arcade-like Asteroids for the 2600 I've ever played, but ALSO, Asteroids Deluxe with the right options! All in one game!!!

Thank you mucho Spiceware!

Hot damn I can't wait to see you whip out a Space Duel version for the 2600! I wonder and hope you'll be able to get a working tether mode for 2 player on this one!

  7. I dunno man... Mr. Do!'s a pretty good port for the 2600, given it's capabilities and the timeframe it was released in IMHO. Perhaps a little sprite work is all it really needs...

Now Burgertime... I know it could seriously use an overhaul. Starting from the ground up would almost be necessary to fix it's problems and drawbacks.

Regardless, unless you want to dive off into the world of Batari Basic coding, getting one of the over-worked, overloaded but very talented 2600 coders here to work on either of these would be a crapshoot at best I'm afraid.

Maaaayyybe Nukey Shay could hack these things into something better... Hard to say though since I have no clue about coding and I don't know what kind of schedule he currently has or whether he'd be interested in these two games enough to try to tackle them. Maybe you could PM him and ask or hope he chimes in here to give his thoughts on the matter?

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck in your noble efforts sir!

  8. Bentley's weapon of choice? His magic chapeau of course! ;)  Gems could be used for either points, a secondary weapon, some sort of cumulative bonus... Who knows really, that would all be up to the game designer(s) methinks. Some new additions like perhaps a magic wand or staff would work too.

Again, to get back on topic, while this is not to take away from Wonderboy and I think it would be a awesome port for the 7800... But a whole new 7800 game based off Bentley Bear/Crystal Castles would be most awesome and definitely worth the effort IMHO. In the end, I'd love to see both of these ideas take off!

  9.

That's a great effort, and matches quite well with the 7800 capabilities, but...I don't think an edited sprite rip of that sort is "proper" for this sort of potential project.

In fact, I'd go so far as to state that having a "straight port" of Wonder Boy would be the wrong way to go about things.

As the topic creator alluded, Wonder Boy was also on NES...as Adventure Island. The reason for the change is pretty well known to Wonder Boy fans (Adventure Island fans seem to not know about it much, for some reason, however): while Wonder Boy was programmed by Westone, and the developer owns the game engine, etc., Sega, the publisher, actually owns the IP itself, including the characters and all related artwork, etc. Westone was able to license the engine, and the gameplay therein, to other developers/publishers, and one of the games that came about that licensing was Hudson's Adventure Island.

I am of the opinion that when thinking of "new" games for retro systems, we have to keep in mind what was going on in the industry at the time the systems in question were "new" themselves (or originally on market during their actual product lifespans). In this case, I don't think Atari 7800 could have gotten a "straight port" of Wonder Boy unless they secured the license from both Westone and Sega (not likely, unless they had secured those rights prior to Sega entering the hardware market in the US, ala the rights Atari had over home ports of the original Mario Bros.), or had the game published by Sega (again, not likely, as Sega had a competing platform)for the game engine and gameplay, with everything else changed (artwork, characters).

So the only way the game would have been on 7800 would've been in modified form, ala the NES's Adventure Island. Therefore, the artwork would have to be "all new", with only the gameplay being the same (or highly similar).

Now...what character would replace Tom-Tom (the original Wonder Boy), and Master Higgins (the star of Adventure Island)?

    IMHO, look no further than:

Bentley Bear (of Crystal Castles, and Atari Karts, "fame"):

    9925-bentleybear_large_large.jpg

    Now...for a title....

Sega's Master System had Wonder (Boy), Nintendo's Entertainment System had Adventure (Island)...so maybe Atari's Pro System can have Bentley Bear on a Quest or going through a Calamity.

    Bentley Bear in...

    Crystal Quest

    or

    Crystal Calamity

I kinda like Crystal Calamity for this one. Crystal Quest can be used for, I dunno...an action/adventure like a reworked of Monster Land (or Dragon's Trap) starring Bentley, much like the later Wonder Boy games became more than "just" platformers (and, ironically, so did the Adventure Island games as they moved onto Super Nintendo - Super Adventure Island 2 has more in common with Metroid and Zelda than it does Mario or the "original" Adventure Island game).

    DUDE. Awesomesauce.

I've always thought Bentley would have been a great icon for Atari, like Mario for Nintendo and Sonic for Sega... A game like this would finally give him some justice due, I thought Crystal Castles deserved a good sequel or at least Bentley in some other game format perhaps, side-scrolling platformer would be the most approachable as it's what Mario and Sonic started out on.

    A GENIEYOUZ IZ YOUZ :D:thumbsup:

  10. Love hitting up 2 player on Blasteroids while controlling both ships, transforming one into a Warrior ship and other a Speeder ship, then merging the ships for awesome firepower. I then unleash the focking fury on the forces of Mukor across the galaxy and eventually him. :D It's an awesome take on Asteroids/Asteroids Deluxe and one of my favorite Atari arcade games!

  11. Bentley, I think it was worse on the 7800. That system had two buttons yet kept the 2600 control setup. I think Absolute could've done a "slightly" better job.

Yikes. :ponder: Almost makes me glad I didn't get the 7800 version with what you've said NightSprinter... Yea, after seeing some of the 7800 versions of these after playing the 2600 versions for years, they are almost as much a disappointment. The 7800 was well equipped to do a very accurate port of all of those games IMHO, so far, only Rampage and Commando seem to be the most faithful or most accurate of them.

  12. Used to play this quite a bit back in the day when I first got it! It was great for what it was and surely pushed the abilities of the 2600, but it was definitely "neutered" in comparison to other ports, namely the excellent port of it on the NES. The lack of jump kicks and jump punches was a definite disappointment to me... I only wish I knew enough about programming in batari to fix this glaring ommission personally, that's one of the very few things that's missing that would make it a nearly perfect port for the 2600 within it's abilities IMHO.

All in all, like most of the activision/absolute arcade ports of the late 80s/early 90s, it's a noble effort,(and one of the better attempts compared to say, Rampage) but perhaps just beyond the abilities of the 2600 to give a faithful port of the arcade game.

  13. Cake with your whine... as in, sounds like wine the beverage. Hey, I get it! Not only extremely original, but witty too.

Being that you're getting all defensive over a largely unnoticed steaming pile of deuce of a game from the post-denouement of the system's lifespan, I'd agree that someone here is whining (hint: it's not me).

Well... I'm glad you actually got that joke, surprising honestly. In spite of my sarcasm, here's a clue, being a dick when giving your said opinion doesn't win you points with me or anyone else in life.

Getting defensive? No my good man, I fully realize the capability of a game that is 20 something years old on a system that is nearly as old as myself, I have no desire to defend it in that regard aside from it is a game I grew up with that I still enjoy.(probably because I actually know how to play it) My issue with your so called opinion, is that's it's pretty pathetic if you can't spend more than 5 minutes to read the manual to learn how to play and yet, still call it a "steaming pile of deuce", because that's the general impression I'm getting. To me that smacks of laziness and I find it rather insulting to others if you're willing to give an opinion about it, at least TRY to learn how to play and give it a chance BEFORE you call it crap.

Again, if you want to give your opinion about something, that's great, it's why I love the freedom we enjoy in the USA of the right of free speech. That doesn't however entitle you to be a dick about it either though. If me calling you out on it is considering whining to you, well then here's a glass full for ya pal.

    Cheers.

P.S. Sorry OP, but some people just don't get it. I'm done here.

  14. IMO, the answer is simply that this game blows dead bears. The end.

Or the fact that's just merely your opinion.

Do you like making completely redundant and pointless observations, or are you simply unaware that IMO = "in my opinion?"

Still, I defy anybody to name a worse wrestling game than this one that can be had for a home console. I've certainly never played one, and wrestling games were my favorite back in the day.

Going from full energy to nothing in 3 seconds from a few punches and kicks FTW.

Only to point out you're being a dick obviously... Either that or you missed my very subtle sarcasm, so take your pick.

So well, hey you don't like the game... That's spectacular, good for you! So here, have some cake with your whine...

    atari-2600-cake.jpg

As far as horrible Atari games goes, this is far from it. As far as wrestling games goes? Sorry, but Mat Mania was always a real POS for a wrestling game to me so... I enjoyed Title Match Pro Wrestling more than I did it by far, even in spite of being for the 7800 with it's "superior graphics".

In the meantime, excuse me while I try to help others actually learn now to play this game and get somewhere on it... And uh, yea, thanks for all that you do sir. Goodday to you...

  15. IMO, the answer is simply that this game blows dead bears. The end.

Or the fact that's just merely your opinion.

Guys, reading the manual reveals that the controls require certain key presses and controller movements to perform moves and execute them. The stamina bar also plays a big factor in whether or not you can overpower the cpu opponent and perform a move on them.(or you take the chance at getting within their grabbing range and get stomped on the mat) Simply put, if your stamina is lower than theirs and they get into grabbing range, you're dead meat!

Granted, the computer controlled opponents can be rather ruthless and waaaaaayyy overpowered due to the fact they can always "out-muscle" you(by jiggling the joystick, aka "muscle mode", much faster than any of us ever could via the game's code when both players have zero stamina left), but there are ways to work around that and still defeat them. Namely, if you stand still in a spot in the ring where the CPU opponent is out of reach,(ring corners work best) you will slowly build up stamina while they keep walking and deplete their stamina. You can also use strategically placed punches and shin kicks to help speed this up. This is KEY to defeating them as you cannot keep them pinned on the mat with a certain amount of stamina regardless of how fast you can jiggle that joystick.

Honestly, start a two-player game and practice the moves and learn the controls on a "dummy player". It's not that terribly complicated and easier than you think IMHO, aside from trying to throw someone out of the ring at times... Hope this helps!

  16. Congrats on making it that far 2d Gamer!

Only once in my entire life have I actually made it to the Cobra fleets in the sector where Solaris is and actually defeated one of them I think.(I can get to Solaris pretty easy on the trainer version with infinite lives) Sadly the second one defeated me... Talk about pissed... :x The Raiders and Mechanoids get downright nasty at that point in the game but are defeatable with practice,(take the Raiders and Mechs at long range if you can) the Cobra fleets however, are a utter nightmare. My only suggestions to you are to learn to track, target and destroy them as quickly as possible, which I'm sure is easier said than done. The added hazard of a red-zone will only seriously complicate things I'm sure... Now to the Cobra ships... Those things are a tough nut to crack as they are VERY erratic with movement and firing. However, I've had an easier time once I figured out a simple tactic, flying up and down to "scroll them up" then to the left or right without colliding with them near you for a quick shot. It's rather risky and not recommended if you haven't practiced it enough, but with practice you can get a much easier shot at them up close for a second, which is all you'll need if you're a good shot.

OH yes, not sure if you know this or not, but if your targeting computer get damaged, learn to use the numbers on each side for up-down and left-right position to try to pin-point your target. Didn't know what those were exactly for the longest time, talk about a eureka moment! :D

Bottom line, this game gets mind-numbingly hard when you see Solaris for the first time in it's sector 2d Gamer. By the time you get to the sector right before returning to the "Solaris sector" to take on the three Cobra fleets there and reach planet Solaris, is by far the most trying part, namely due to the red-zone. The Cobras however are VERY frustrating, even without being a red-zone. Shot placement and timing is highly crucial to taking them down quickly and without losing ships.

Here's a map of all the sectors by the way:

    http://skintigh.tripod.com/atari/solaris.html

    Hope this helps!
