Just a vegetarian or vegan which would mean no milk, eggs, cheese, butter, ice cream etc.?

Actually it appears he became a vegetarian in his early 40's to overcome health issues like constipation and diarrhea. It seems to have been a gradual change of diet, from mostly vegetarian but with a slice of ham, some caviar, cottage cheese or eggs now and then, to perhaps only vegetarian choices.
