  1. Gradius III(arcade and SNES port on Arcade difficulty). You're shot from all over the place, which makes it super easy to lose your ship, and not only that, should you get to the Fire Stage, you're in hell(fireballs all over the place, it's so damn tight). I have not seen a game this hard, except for R-Type III on the SNES. Man, the stages are so tight, it's a chore just to get to the boss(no joke, I spent practically 2 months just to get past Stage 2 in R-Type III, and the same amount of time to try to get through Gradius III(arcade version) Stage 2 on Normal difficulty(been playing it in the Gradius III And IV pack) without ever having success).

  2. Crap... At least with $80, I can get it on the spot. I don't really like eBay because shipping times can be massive(I bought Gradius and Gradius II for the Famicom off of eBay, came to me exactly 3 weeks after they were bought, but there was a typhoon at the time(at least that's what I was told) I bought them(they came from Japan), so considering the circumstances, quite good, but, you know). Plus, they're available in abundance here. 1 local flea market sells them, as well as a thrift store about 5 minutes away from my house(except they don't sell the FC Twin in white). You gotta remember this though, I(might) pay extra for duties(remember, I'm in Canada, so I might have to pay duties if I buy an FC Twin off of eBay, because most of them are sold in the United States).

  3. Yeah, because a port with the SuperFX chip would have been a piece of cake. The original arcade version has graphics that look exactly the same like the kind the SuperFX chip can do. By the way, can I get a full report on the games you tried that are on my list(I'd love if people would be extra super precise when they test so I can get a perfect image of what I'm to expect with the system, so mention every little detail you can pick out if possible(got original systems to compare to?))? By the way, what would you rate, on a scale of 1 to 10, the difficulty level of repainting this system? If I don't get the color I want(white) and I get tired of the color I have(which I would prefer to be silver/black if it's not white), I was thinking of repainting it in SNES Mini colors, and possibly add a custom logo on it. What kind of paint should I use for that?

  4. I personally couldn't care less about compatibility problems. If my NES games have audio that's butchered so bad(like Gradius, although I'm not sure if the Japanese version(mine) will have the same kind of issues(maybe a 75% chance)), have garbled graphics or don't play at all(like Castlevania 3, although I don't play it that much), I'll just play them in my front-loader. And if there are problems with SNES games I'll jjust have to suck up to them(I can live with some discoloration or incorrect audio in the games, anyways. I'm not a PURIST, so minor problems don't bother me) I'm getting it for these reasons anyways:

Nintendo-brand top-loaders are expensive(would cost about as much as an FC Twin in Canada)

Nintendo-brand top-loaders are IMPOSSIBLE to find in my area(have not seen 1 ever)

I'm fed up of trying to repair 2 dead SNESes without ever having any success(and probably never will because it looks like the problem is one of the PPUs)

By the way, Gorilla, does your NES and SNES collections have any of the games included on my list?

  5. Guys, I think I found what "killed" the SNES in the good casing(the one that never gives an image): rust. I found rust hiding on 8 pins of PPU 1 on the board(where the 2 join), as well as 2 pins of the A/V out(where it connects to the board). I sure hope it hasn't reached the board itself(the rust's on the solder, mind you). If it didn't I'll see if I can swap PPU 1 from both boards. Unless I desolder the rusted pins and apply some new solder...

  6. When people say that, it pisses me off(pardon my language, but it's the truth). I mean, look, some people(like me) are really intent on getting a Famiclone, and original hardware purists go in and bash the clones. And by the way, I'm no longer wanting to buy a Yobo FC Game Console(was that what you were talking about James? Or was it the FC Twin?), simply because of how cheap the system is made. Look, here it costs $40 and when you pick it up, it feels like an SNES with no motherboard in it. It felt really flimsy. At least the FC Twin has some weight on it(a bit lighter than my PlayStation Mini(PSone)) and feels much more solid. But I want to know something about what seems to be the newest batch of FC Twins that has the Yobo logo behind the NES cart slot instead of FC Twin. Has anything changed in that one besides new box art and a Yobo logo on the console(are they still making it in white? Even if it isn't, I could always repaint it in SNES Mini colors if I get bored of the color I got)? Now, I'll move over my list of NES titles to where I listed the SNES game I'd like to buy. I would love it if someone who has the games listed and an FC Twin to give me their personal experience with them. Please post every single minor imperfection, please. I want to know exactly what I'm to expect with that system.

  7. 2nd change of plans: My SNES is toast, so I'll officially name my mod: Don't Trash your Dead SNES, Make a Top-loader NES out of it. It involves stuffing in an NES board and a couple of other stuff, but I'm currently debating whether or not to put in hardwired controllers(I like the idea, but it's a pain having the wires all over the place and trailing the system around, so I might have 1 controller port on the left of the casing, one on the right, or both in the back). Anyways, once I get the mod going, I'll take the pictures of what I'm doing and post a WIP thread here.

  8. Old thread, I know, but I want to bring it back because now, I'm REALLY considering an FC Twin(Ignore the other 2 Famiclones, those are out of the question). Now, I'd like to know if the FC Twin is any good with the games I'd like to get for it(SNES games, that is), as well as my NES games:

    SNES:

Arkanoid Doh it Again(as well as SNES mouse)

    Castlevania Dracula X

StarFox(I believe it discolors the sky and makes it green, but I personally don't mind that, it actually looks funny)

    Super R-Type

    Darius Twin

    F-Zero

Race Drivin'(does this use the SuperFX chip?)

Tetris 2(is it the same as the NES version?)

    Stunt Race FX

    NES:

MegaMan 2(I heard that MegaMan games had sound issues on some Famiclones)

    Castlevania

    Castlevania II

    Castlevania III(Might never work)

    Rad Racer

Rad Racer II(Was said to cause hardware freakouts)

Duck Hunt(won't work because of the lack of NES controller ports)

    Super Mario Bros. 2(US version)

    Super Mario Bros. 3

    Gradius(import)

    Gradius II(import)

110-in-1(don't ask me how this thing landed in Canada, all I know is that I found it with no casing at my friend's pawn shop a while back)

    Sky Shark

    Tiger Heli

    The Hunt for Red October

    Life Force

    Built To Win

    Excitebike(with Famicom-NES converter)

    Jackal

    Blaster Master

    Spy Hunter

    Tetris 2

    The Immortal

The Legend of Zelda(I don't play it, but I still have the cart, gold one)

    Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!

    Soccer(lame)

Super Sprint(Tengen cart, might not work)

And no Famiclone bashing, please! It's really hard for me to come across an original SNES that sells for less than the price of an FC Twin, and when I do find one, it's discolored(yuck). And, what color should I get between silver/black and white(I have a preference for white because it looks like a carbon-copy(sort of) of the SNES Mini)?

  9. DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!! I got distracted and shorted the damn voltage regulator!!! And it was the discolored one! DAAAAAAAAAMMMNNN!!!! Now what? By the way, both console's regulators gave a reading. Now the discolored one won't power on anymore!!! CRAAAAAP!!!!!!!!! And the pin is melting into a brown liqiud on pin 3! Now I'll never get it working ever again! By the way, how can I fix the constant black screen on the other system? We'll ignore the discolored one, because I killed it because of my own stupidity.

  10. Do you have access to a digital multimeter?

Hold on just a minute, I think I do! But mine is one of those with a needle on a dial, the analog type. Anyways, where are the +5v and Ground points on the SNES Model 1's 2 PPUs? Which of these is positive(+5v?) and which is negative(Ground?)? I'll see if one of the PPUs are dead, and hopefully, I can swap the PPUs of both consoles, that is if different PPUs are fried. What could be the faulty pin(or pins or whatever) causing this inside the PPUs?

EDIT: I think I found something! What's that red box with a screw in it on the board supposed to do? It seems like when I loosen it, the image distortion on the screen changes. Weird.

EDIT 2: Nope. It actually made the system output in green at one point! Man, I NEED PPU SCHEMATICS so I can see how I can test their voltage!

  11. Will do, as soon as I set up my digital camera, I'll update this post with the pictures of what both carts do on both consoles.

    UPDATE: Here they are:

NHL Stanley Cup on discolored console(hard to see, but still noticable):brokensnespics001fp7.th.jpg

Brett Hull Hockey 95 on discolored system:brokensnespics002fr2.th.jpg

And on the normally colored one, it's just a black screen. What's causing this?

  12. Yes, yes they are, except that 1 had(I say "had" because I swapped their cases) the top discolored and the other had the bottom discolored. Even if they were PAL, I would still be able to get a good image, but in B&W(that's what PAL PlayStation stuff does to me without a color fix). By the way, I got another cart(NHL Stanley Cup), but this one STILL garbles up, but even worse than Brett Hull Hockey 95. It shows garbled white lines and keeps on doing that forever, and like with Brett Hull, if I smash or flex the cart, the image changes. And in the one that outputted no video with Brett Hull(the one that had a discolored top), it does the same with this one, black screen. What is the problem????? I need to know before I shell out some cash on an FC Twin(I'd need to know how it works with the games I think are worth something first, more notably Arkanoid Doh it Again, which I can use the SNES Mouse in order to make it play like Arkanoid on the NES with the Vaus Controller.

  13. No, sorry, I don't, but I think the problem is maybe the cartridge I got, because every time I hit it somewhere, I get a differently garbled image, so the cart is probably dead. If the next cart I get works fine, time to get me a Super Nintendo Mouse, official controller(I don't like the Angler crap I got with them) and Arkanoid Doh it Again, as well as about 9 other carts(pretty much the rare stuff, I'll put up a list on my next post). But I replaced the power supply and they turn on now, so it can't be the power switch or the fuse. And, where exactly is the voltage regulator?

  14. Right, so I'll give that a go and see if it changes anything. If it doesn't, then what could be the problem?

UPDATE: I brought the consoles to my cousin to check out the problem, but the problem is not a dirty cart connector. One console seems to output the wrong frequency(and it nearly killed his TV!! It crackled befored the TV shut itself off), and the other one had 3 pins on PPU 1 that had RUST ON THEM! He tried to clean it up with a soldering iron, but it made the pins black. Anyways, I tried them again, but it still doesn't make a difference. HELP!!!! I don't want to trash them until all of my options run out.

  15. The power supply was only part of the answer, now I've got an even BIGGER problem. 1 system gives a garbled image then goes to a black screen and endlessly plays some kind of song, and the other one gives no image at all(the game I'm trying is Brett Hull Hockey 95). I tried to clean the cart's contacts, but to no avail, and I can't properly clean the cart connector in the system. Is the PPU dead in both systems? Do I need to replace something? Is the 62-pin connector finished inside the systems? What's wrong? Please help me! I've spent all day trying to figure out the problem but came up empty(as usual). If this is beyond repair, I might suck it up and leave $80CDN aside for an FC Twin, besides, it's only $20 more than a used original system, and I get an NES cart slot as an added bonus(and of course, I'd take it SNES mini colors).

  16. I have picked up 2 SNESes that don't work to see if I can fix them. The problem: they don't power on(they're 2 Model 1's, by the way, the one that gets discolored over time). There's no power light whatsoever. I tried to stick some wire on the 2 solder points of the 50C 1.5A fuse, but they still wouldn't power on(I'm not sure if you can jump the fuse on a Model 1). One of 'em has browned solder on the board, but I'm not sure if that means anything. And I didn't test the power supply with something to see if it works. Any advice? Are the fuses blown on both?

EDIT: The power supply IS dead, so that might be the problem. I'll go get another one tomorrow and see if the consoles power on. If they still don't, then what else could be wrong?

  17. Change of plans: I found a dead SNES, which I'll use to make the following mod once I fix it: raise the casing, add some wood in between to fill in the gap, stuff in an NES board, use the card-edge side of the U-Connector soldered after wires to the board to make it top-loading(I'll make a hole and a dust flap on top of the SNES casing to make the NES carts fit in). This was my FC Twin-ish idea I mentioned before. Since it uses original hardware, don't expect any compatibility issues(except with the usual Japanese VRC6 games). Is that better than my initial idea of front-loader to top-loader(this adds an SNES into the mix, after all, I've got about 11 games other than the ones I bought off the Wii Virtual Console that I think might be worth something)?
