For me, what it always comes down to is pure gameplay. I have both of these systems but the Jag gets ten times the use because I think it's games are just a lot more fun to play than the Saturn games. this is just my opinion of course, you'd have to try some of the top games on both systems to decide which game YOU think are more fun to play. One thing about the Saturn that I never like are it's texture mapping capabilities, often they just seem too blocky and plain ugly (Sega Touring Car for example-yuk! I'd rather play World Tour Racing on the Jag), I'd just as soon play games on the Jag with no texture mapping (like Battlesphere) as it's a hell of a lot easier on the eyes. Saturn textures were never as good as Playstation or even Jaguars in my humble opinion. There are a lot of cool games on both systems though.

Can you elaborate a little? What is this "N4" video processor supposed to do? What is it for exactly? Why use one?
-
I think it would be very possible, but as Clint said, it may not be able to have all the texture mapping. of course I'm not a programmer (yet), but I have read a lot about systems and what they might be capable of and I remember reading once that the N64 can throw around about as many polygons, fully textured and with all it's special effects bells and wistles as the Jaguar can with just plain polygons (maybe some garuad shading and lightsourcing thrown in). So it seems to me that a game like twisted metal could be done, but it may be only with plain shaded polygons like Virtua Racing and maybe some garuad shading, light sourcing and a few textures thrown in. it is my theory that pretty much any game could be done on any system, but it has to be downsized for that particular system. A perfect example of this theory at work can be seen right here at Atari age with the Space Harrier game being done on the 8-bit Atari. Even Halo could be done on the Jaguar, but in the end it would look a awful lot like Jaguar's Doom. IMHO.

Amiga software to disk from images
Gunstar replied to Gunstar's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Actually, that may be one way, but it is not the only way. I have a program on both my ST and PC that will write PS2 format disks and I can even choose the number of tracks and sectors then I just write the MSA file to the disk formatted in this way (depending on how large the MSA file is) on my PC and since the ST can read PC disks, it works fine (most of the time,I have found that formatting the disk on the ST then putting it in the PC and writing the MSA file to it there works best). But I do use a special program on the PC to write the image since the PC only understands the 720 or 1.44 meg formats with windows/ms-dos. Once you've figured it out the first time, it's a breeze. This way works without having a HD on the ST. -
Regardless of the reason, you DO have to cover up the hole on HD's to work on the Atari ST, it works in a pinch, but get DD disks as soon as possible. I search for them every time I'm out "thrifting" and I've come across tons over time both used and new, as well as ordering new&used from B&C (good prices).

Atari Falcon Splash Screen...
Gunstar replied to Clint Thompson's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
The Jaguar and Jagcd splash screens are still the best I've ever seen, and I've seen them all pretty much; definately the best out of what I own (see bottom). If the Intellivision had one it wasn't very memorable, I did own one at one time you know...the 5200's is my favorite on a "golden age" console/computer. -
This is one of my favorite games for the Lynx. If you've been spoiled by modern systems with texture-mapped polygons and smooth as silk frame rates you may think this game really stinks based on just that, but if you are a classic gamer and play plain polygon games on an ST or Amiga, you should have no trouble enjoying this title. It's as good to me as any of the polygon games on those 16-bit systems, such as Armour-Geddon, etc. Steel Talons is available on the ST (maybe the Amiga too) and I haven't seen that version(s) but this Lynx title looks and plays as good as the ones I have seen. The framerate is decent as far as I'm concerned and is something I don't even notice once I'm into the game. I think the polygon landscapes are great, especially on some of the desert levels where the altitude of some of the mountains (big rocks) are quite amazing and it's just fun to fly around them. The gameplay is excellent and everything is quite detailed (if you actually get close enough to see stuff, which most of the time you won't). The bottom line is it is very playable as long as you aren't totally spoiled by modern games and just can't play a solid filled poly game anymore (shame on you!!!). With just a bit of imagination this game rocks! I'd give the graphics an 8/10 (I love ALL polygon graphics, textured or not!)

This may be a pretty old post, but it's the first I'd seen it so I read his "Chips" review, but I don't see why you had hoped it or what point you may have been trying to make.

Atari Falcon Splash Screen...
Gunstar replied to Clint Thompson's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Well, it looks cool, but I have no idea what the real one looks like... -
I have the large Lynx carring case (soft-side) if that's the carry all your refering too. I have my games doubled up in and partially tripled, it works pretty good. I do like the jewel case idea though, especially since Songbird games come in jewel cases anyway. has anyone ever tried using jewel cases made for the TurboGrafx-16/PCengine cards with Lynx cards?

Very cool! Thanks Emkay and thanks again to you others for the cool links and info. -
I happen to have a BRAND NEW still shrinkwrapped package of ten DSDD 3.5" diskettes I'll trade (NOT SELL). I'm looking for working copies of ISHAR 1,2&3 and Legends of Valour disks for the ST, none of the downloadable disk images have ever worked for me...new or used, don't care about boxes or instructions, just want working disks that will run properly on my 1040STf. The ones online are always crunched by the hacking teams and just don't seem to sork on anything but emulators. I want original copies (don't even care if they are originals or copies of orignals, just so long as they are working and non-crunched; on the same amount of disks the game was sold with. I don't necessarily need ALL the games I mentioned. PM me if you can help and we cna work out a trade. I also have PLENTY of used DSDD disks if you need more than ten. But I will not sell them, as they are hard to come by, only trade for above games because I'm desperate for those games.

Where did you get TC? E-bay or private sale? Is it a flashrom with the game or is it eeprom cart or something similiar to the SW2K that B&C sells. I'd just really like to have that game too, but I've NEVER seen one up for sale ANYWHERE!

There are two Jaguar carrying cases. One is the plastic rental case I think you guys are talking about and the other is a soft-sided case they offered out of the Jag-ware catalog. Just FYI...

I started collecting early on too, but because I'm a player/collector, I collected the better games first and have saved most of the worse games for last and Space Ace always seems to get bad reviews (even though I enjoyed it in the arcades years ago), so it happens to be one of the last half-dozen or so games I haven't gotten yet. I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled for a rare long box edition that's new or get one used in good condition. That being said, anyone have a Longbox edition in good condition they want to sell or trade?

First off, I take very good care of all my electronics, that being said, I have a Lynx I manufactured in 1989 and the screen and backlight work just as good as the day I bought it. But here are some tips for not only longevity, but to avoid the "washed out" look too: Play the Lynx in low or no light situations, that way you don't have to turn the brightness up as much which saves the backlight from burning out sooner, minimizes the washed-out look and conserves the batteries (if your using batteries instead of a power-pack, but in any case may save you a few cents on the electric bill anyway). If you have a Sun-visor for it, use it, all the time; this is another way to avoid having to turn the brightness up to see better and get the washed-out look. Looking at the screen from the proper angle also helps to see it better and you can turn the backlight down further and still see it if you find a good angle, again saving power and the backlight. Never expose it to extreme temperatures if possible, this means don't take it outdoors in the cold of winter or the hot summer sun. I've kept mine in basically dry, room temperature conditions 99% of the time I've owned it. These practices OBVIOUSLY work, since my 14 year old Lynx still works perfectly!

I thought I had remembered correctly that I'd seen it in the big box. Thanks Lemmi! Now I know for sure! I guess I'll just keep searching for one in the big box then, I want it the RIGHT way for my collection, so I guess I won't be buying it from VGL or GoAtari! That would have sucked if it ONLY came in the small case, it's bad enough that I don't have large boxes for BL and Vidgrid to go next to the rest of my cd boxes!

Now that's a name i haven't heard in a LOOOOOOONG time (Mars). Isn't that the shop in downtown Glen Ellyn? Long time Atari dealer? I used to go there all the time back in the 80's when I lived in Wheaton. rode my bike down the priarie path every saturday to lioter there. Bought most of my 8-bit Atari and 7800 stuff from Mars Merchandising...ahh the memories! they used be down in elmhurst (next to BK not to far from the car wash) but they have long gone now. inky used be in conatct with them (we almost had one of the guys come to VGS,but inky couldn't get hold of him) (I used to go to their swap meets in villa park,il at the iowa comunity cneter) memories.. Dan Iacovelli The store was actually on St. Charles Road, and the mail address was 'technically' Lombard IIRC... that's the one I'm thinking of, just got the towns mixed up, it was Lombard that I rode to on the prarie path...

I own Dragon's lair and Braidead 13 which I picked up new with the outer boxes (even though I see BD13 often advertised on E-bay as "new" with no outer box), but I have yet to see SpaceAce on E-bay "new" with the outer box. Does anyone own a copy with the large outer box? I want to buy this game for my collection, but if it came with the outer box than that is what I must have. I've noticed VGL and GoAtari auctions claiming new shrink wrapped copies, but they have no outer box so I'm wondering if this game was ever released that way...I could swear that I saw this game at EB back in the day with the outer box, but I can't seem to find a copy like that now. Anyone know?

I didn't get mine until january '95, but I payed full price and NEVER regretted it! There were enough cool games that came out for it at the speed I came up with the money (I bought about a game every three months) that I never was disappointed in the least, and my friends at college where all very impressed with every game I bought (except checkered flag) that my Jaguar was the center of attention the whole semester (by me and my friends).

Amiga software to disk from images
Gunstar replied to Gunstar's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
yeah, I didn't mean it like that, just that i need a cable and software to transfer the files over to the Amiga, I realize the similarities end there... -
I think he may be talking about an original Playstation which can be picked up used for about $20. I think the GTA games he's refering too are the original and number 2...I know he said PS2, but he also said PLAYSTATION too...

So I guess it has to be done more like it is with the 8-bit Atari and an APE cable and software (10502PC, etc.). thanks.
