ToeJam and Earl is on the virtual console

A few months ago Radio Shack announced plans to get into the video game business and start carrying major releases and hardware in stores. I still haven't been to one to take a look though.

Virtual Console Numbers Revealed (IGN.com)
DragonmasterDan replied to 8th lutz's topic in Nintendo Wii / Wii U
That 33 million might be money made by Nintendo. I'm sure they split the profits on third party titles meaning an 8.00 Super Nintendo game that's a third party game only brings Nintendo 4.00 for example. -
Yeah but it's worth noting the reason Sega CD systems are going for a fair amount of money is that the Sega CD has a lineup of games exclusive to the system that is probably as deep or deeper than the Genesis itself. Games like the original versions of Lunar 1 and 2 ( which are superior to the remakes), Shining Force CD, the only English versions of Popful Mail and Snatcher for example really bolster that systems collectibility. With supplies of Sega CD hardware obviously being less abundant than the Genesis itself it's no surprise that the system and its sought after games are still popular but the original platform The other reason the Genesis collectibility is low is due to the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 and PSP that came out last year and the fact that a lot of classic Gen games are now on the Virtual Console, the need for the original hardware itself has lowered. The Sega CD isn't supported by the virtual console and may not be since it requires a more complex emulator.

Unless you have some of the less common games or some of the more collectible RPGs you're not going to get much for the system. I know the majesco model 3 Genesis goes for a bit more than the original 2 but in general Genesis stuff is cheap. The main reason is there isn't a large collectors market for it and there is no shortage of systems, common games and peripherals on the market.

I know prior to the release of the 2800 Atari had licensed other companies to distribute the VCS in Japan. I'm guessing it wasn't very successful since Atari wound up eventually releasing the product there themselves in 1982. Does anyone have anymore background information about this?

Zelda Crossbow Training is the bomb
DragonmasterDan replied to swlovinist's topic in Nintendo Wii / Wii U
Ehh, I think using the zapper is a little bit better for precise aiming personally. I've done a lot better playing Ghost Squad with the Zapper than without. It is heavier and harder to move around than the wii-mote but the authenticity of having a trigger to pull to fire adds to it as well. -
Rise of the Video game (documentary type show)
DragonmasterDan replied to Lemmi's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yep, they failed to address Atari's return to the business, also it is worth noting that the 7800 was released in 1984 in small quantities but still. There's practically no mention of the GameBoy which practically revolutionized the industry for example as well. They showed Virtual Fighter (I can't be sure if it was the Arcade, Saturn or 32X version) on their clips about how the Playstation changed the industry........... -
Ummm, no. There are plenty of DS Lites to be had. I thought that a year ago, a week before Christmas I was doing some last minute shopping and discovered they had become difficult to find, the only DS's I saw in many trips to various retailers between the last week and a half or so of Christmas were a few used ones at a gamestop. I'm sure in a more rural area it wasn't as much of a challenge but at least where I live 25+ stores I visited were out of them by the middle of December.

Rise of the Video game (documentary type show)
DragonmasterDan replied to Lemmi's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I don't think they said it "launched" with Sonic. Just that Sonic was a pack-in. The 2nd part wasn't as good as the first. I thought they went too far too quickly. They're already up to the current generation. What are they going to do for part 3 & 4? The 2nd part was very misleading. It was pissing me off with all of the wrong or left out info. First they said that Luigi was introduced in Super Mario Bros. on the NES. Second they misled you by leaving out info about the NES and said that Super Mario Bros. was the pack in game for the NES, but how they said it would make you think that it was the origional pack in game. They did the same thing for the Genesis and Sonic. They didn't mention anything about R.O.B. and how he made the NES popular in the first place, not Mario. Sonic wasn't introduced until 1991, 2 years after the Genesis was released. The show went from the Genesis and skipped all the way to the PS1 and then skipped to the PS2, It didn't even mention the SNES, Gameboy, Jaguar, Gamegear, Lynx, Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, Virtual Boy, Turbographix 16, XBOX, and many other systems. Yep exactly, they then talked about CD-rom technology stemming from Nintendo and Sony splitting up when designing the Super NES CD-ROM that would eventually become the Playstation. They failed to mention the reason Nintendo was interested in a CD system to begin with was because NEC had great success with such a product in Japan by that time and the release of a Sega add on CD rom was impending for example. Far too much of the program focused on how motion capture works and cinematics and had very little to do with how games actually evolved. -
Rise of the Video game (documentary type show)

In watching part 2 I just get frusturated, there's a lot of misinformation or relevant points that are completely ignored combined with quasi advertising from people like Peter Moore from EA (former President of Sega and former head of Microsoft's Xbox division and based on his many comments most likely still employed by MS at the time of the filming) it just got bad. Fun examples of misinformation are inferences that the Genesis/ Mega Drive launched with Sonic the Hedgehog as the pack-in. A lot of the program just seems like a giant commercial for EA. -
Question about backing up sega cd games
DragonmasterDan replied to ultramoo's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I just tested out the burned bin/cue here and it seems to work on my CDX just fine as well. hmmm, I've tried it on my Sega CD 1 burned at low speeds using CDR-win, Nero, CDRtools under Linux on Verbatim, Maxell and many other brand CDRs in the past to no avail. The game boots, but locks up in spots, the original disc plays fine, Other games that I've backed up onto CDRs work fine. Maybe the version of the system makes a difference I'm curious as to what model the other people here have used that have had luck with it. I have a JVC X-eye but I'd have to dig it out of storage to test it. -
Yeah, in a little more extended use it's not as bad as I thought initially, at least not the D-pad. I still don't like the distance between fire buttons. It's a step up from the pro-line that's for certain.
-
Yeah, the buttons are way too far apart and the D-pad is stiff (this was a brand new pad too so it's not like it was damaged). How much luck have people on here had with modding NES pads or Gen pads to use dual fire?
-
How locatable is the telegames stick?
-
So... I tried the European Atari 7800 joypad today, It's a very awkward design. I'm guessing only the pack in Pro-line and it were licensed by Atari as dual fire controllers. Maybe I should start looking into hacked controller options.

Zelda: Phantom Hour Glass (DS)

Yep, it took me some time too. The Stylus works extremely well. It's a great design of a new control scheme type by Nintendo. -
Got some PC Engine/TurboGrafx 16 questions
DragonmasterDan replied to Ace_1's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Well the tap is also a must own strictly because it also extends your controller distance from the system a little bit. Also a word of recommendation, avoid the NEC Avenue 6 button PC Engine pads (the ones designed for Street Fighter) the D-pad is looser than a standard TurboGrafx/Duo/PCE pad and it causes trouble with certain games (some games go into automatic slow motion etc, this is why the 6 button Genesis pad had a mode button) -

Regional Lockouts On GBA Games?
DragonmasterDan replied to Vic George 2K3's topic in Classic Console Discussion
There's no TV-Format issues with handhelds. Yeah, but that's mainly due to PAL and NTSC differences, with the US and Japan both countries use NTSC. So that was never the issue. The primary reason there are no lockouts on handhelds is unlike a regular system, going back to the original GameBoy the manufacturers have guessed that travelers are likely to bring along their handheld game system (GameBoy, Lynx, Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket, Game Boy Advance, PSP etc) and might be more likely to buy software for it when traveling since the handheld system is more likely to be accompanying them. As a result regional lockouts were generally left out where in a regular console they are left in. -
Question about backing up sega cd games
DragonmasterDan replied to ultramoo's topic in Classic Console Discussion
If ripped properly it will work. Yeah, but using standard disc copying software it won't it since as I said the original disc isn't an ISO complaint CD. That's the problem. I've tried to copy it using a lot of different types of software to no avail. It's my favorite game of all time (hence the screen name) and the day will eventually come when the disc will rot or otherwise lose its readability and I'd like to still be able to play it. I've been playing it a bunch for days now and no freezing up or anything yet! Are you playing it on an actual Sega CD or an emulator? -
Saturn CIB...What all makes it complete?
DragonmasterDan replied to SINGLE TOOTH's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Here are pictures of my boxed model 2 Saturn, I've removed the controller, av wires and AC adapter from the box since those are in my box of Saturn stuff (I have five Saturns due to the cartridge slots that have difficulty reading third party cards and devices) or are boxed with other Saturns. With excepton to the brown cardboard inner part of the box everything originally packaged with the system is shown. Yes, I have a messy floor. I also recieved the 3 in 1 box with Virtual Cop, Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona but it was in a separate box. -
Rise of the Video game (documentary type show)
DragonmasterDan replied to Lemmi's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Wankers. Even the official website seems very European. it refers to the Genesis to us as the Mega Drive for example. I'm guessing this was a BBC produced series Discovery bought the rights to and brought over here. -
I think the more important thing than hardware specifications that the NES brought to the table was new and innovative types of games. Nintendo's first party games like Super Mario Bros, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Zelda and others really changed the way the home console industry worked. Prior to the NES most home games were very similar to arcade style games (with a few interface light PC style games here and there). With the NES Nintendo didn't just make a home system, Nintendo created new rules for what a home video game should be. Prior to the NES almost all console games were originally designed as arcade games. A game like Zelda or Metroid wouldn't work well in an arcade (I'm aware of the PlayChoice 10 thing) since it requires saving (or passwords) and can be frustrating for an arcade owner since death isn't always imminent and a player could play for hours without dying. As a result new genres of games were created, games that were designed specifically to be played for longer durations. This is something that I doubt Coleco would have brought to the table newer hardware or not. Remember the Sega Master System was also a superior piece of hardware to the NES and it didn't fair that well (at least in the US) either.
