  1. Hm, another 32-bit 2d system would be the NEC PC-FX, which falls into the "lots and lots of FMV" category...

The Sega Saturn started out life as a system designed to do excellent 2d, and required some major last minute design alterations to make it decent at 3d as well (IIRC the second SH-2 was added at this point). One wonders what happens with Nintendo- some rumors seem to imply that Nintendo was planning on doing more 3d on the SNES, with a game industry that magically doesn't have 3d, they may decide that SNES + SuperFX2 is good enough. The PlayStation may not do as well, as a lot of it's appeal came from it's 3d graphics.

Yep, the PC-FX was designed in 1992 for all intents and purposes and then sat for two years before NEC released it realizing that the generation was shifting away from the 16-bits.

  2. IIRC, the 32X only required the video out of the Genny to plug into the input side and then the output went right to the tv. You could actually put power to the 32X and not hook it up correctly and the games would still "sort of" play (Star Wars did not have all the graphics but still moved around).

I have a CDX and was told the 32X would not work with it. Mine worked fine for years...

    C

yeah, if you played the 32X using RF output rather than the composite from the 32X you got missing graphics. I've run into that before.

  3. They don't go for very much $$, but they're very scarce and a lot of people are trying to collect them nowadays since people have become more aware of them. I had a CIB blue label California Games but sold it a few years ago.

This is in large part because in the US there isn't a particularly thriving community of Master System collectors.

  4. Which 3DO systems do you guy prefer?

I have had the original for sometome, FZ1 I think its called and now I have a Goldstar on the way because I bought it for the light gun. Which model would you keep? Is there any reason to keep both as I assume Im to sell the goldstar if I get rid of one???

Intsead of starting my own topic I figured Id just ask you fellow 3DO gamers here.

    Thanks for any help. :)

The FZ-10 is the smallest and lightest and for those reasons it's my favorite. I also have a Goldstar. The Goldstar is a lot rarer. Also there IS a 3DO forum at http://cdinteractive.co.uk/3do/forum/ I'm DragonmasterDan there as well.

  5. I worked on a Sega Master System for my local game shop and got some store credit for it. I picked up a few games including a blue label Ghostbusters for the SMS even though I already have the standard brown label version. This caught my eye and resulted in me looking around online for another, but I haven't found anything - not a single picture or ebay auction.

Any idea why a blue version of this exists? There were few companies that I knew of that had different colored lables than the standard brown ones (Parker Bros, I think had some white labels like Montezuma's Revenge)

Even if it isn't super rare, I still find it to be interesting. Kind of a nice "Sonic the Hedgehog" blue.

It is actually just a tiny bit darker than how it appears in the picture, but not much.

My Alex Kidd in Shinobi world is blue.

  6. the classic gaming scene is definitely interesting. I to have thought about opening up my own store, to buy and sell classic and new stuff, much like The Exchange, but for strictly games.

For actual software and repairs, I would doubt there would be enough demand to actually set up a company, maybe an internet store or something, but not enough to be able to support a physical location, you would have to sell the games produced for a lot of money to make profit, most homebrewers I believe produce and code the games as hobbies and release them for the public to enjoy, we should be thankful for that as they don't have to release anything if they don't want to.

The problem with a lot of classic gaming stores I've seen is that it's hard to operate a brick and mortar location that sells mostly used product because the vast majority of what you're getting in stock is product that's difficult to sell. A lot of places have way too many common games. Sought after or rare games are basically impossible to find in classic gaming stores since they got bought up so quickly. To further exacerbate the problem there does exist ebay which in its own right is the ultimate classic gaming store.

The places I've seen that have success also offer repairs and new products as well. It's just a hard market to compete in these days due to the explosion of online sales and the fact that most of your customers aren't looking for common product since you are a specialty of a specialty store.

  7. There will be great virtual game console games coming out in North America this year like Star Tropics, Phantasy Star 4, Harvest Moon, Super Smash Bros., River Ransom City, Lords of Thunder, Shining Force 2 and Books of Y's 1& 2. Sega CD games, and Game boy games will be coming to the vc this year.

Y's 1 and 2 was announced by Hudson and ratedby the ESRB it's coming.

There will be a crash bandicoot game in the Ps 3 this year.

Considering Vivendi owns the license it's highly likely it will be multiplatform whenever it comes out.

There will be more management people getting replaced in some game companies.

There will a pr problem for a game publisher or game developer this year. It will not be caused by criminal activities by teens. It was be caused by bribing a game review site or magazine. It will be cause by that or by a bad advertising campaign for a game.

Game companies management changes all the time. Also that sort of thing has been going on for a while from what I've heard, it's just not as talked about because people don't care.

There will be online game accounts being stolen for rare items or for moving virtual items.

  8. I tried the controller port trick and a Gen controller to no avail (it actually doesn't recognize the CV button presses with the gen controller in either slot). I'll try a 2600 stick next.

I´m using a Atari Euro-Joypad and an Y-cable (so that i can hook up the Coleco-Controller and the Atari in Port one at the same time). => works great!

I have the Euro joypad but no Y cable at my disposal.

  9. A 2nd controller in port 2 works for that (IIRC, not sure in all cases). If you only have 1 CV controller, you need one w/ a keypad.

As I said, there are several different configurations that work, but it's prob. best just to use the SA controller(s).

    SA controller= Standard Atari or?

Added in edit: Ehhh, I realize you mean Super Action. Nevermind.

  10. But the genesis doesn't have those problems.

It's cheap and can withstand a nucular holocaust.

It's kind of sad to see genesis hardware mashed together with nintendo's crap.

Yeah, which is why this is one of the only Genesis clones I've ever seen.

SNES's are tough as well which is why besides the FC Twin or whatever I've not seen many clones of it either.

  11. I was actually wondering about this system ever since I first saw it on eBay. What I would really like to know is if it works with the Sega 32X and Virtua Racing(the Genesis version with the Sega Virtua Processor).

Considering the Majesco Genesis 3 won't work with Virtua Racing I doubt it. Also the 32X requires those ports in the back, I don't think a clone system would include that.

Clone systems never seem to be as good as the real thing. Aside from the fact that they are "new", I don't understand the appeal. Why put up with unknown compatibiliy, substandard build quality, and nonstandard parts? Might as well just take the money and buy and old system, then give it some TLC.

To the OP: I'm not trying to trash your post, having an NES and Genesis in the same box is cool, I admit that. :-) Would be great if it were SMS and NES.

Well the appeal is newer parts, price, size advantages at the expense of compatibility.

This is why Famiclones are so popular, NES's (and even the NES 2) are both not exactly the best piece of hardware in the world. And a lot of people are willing to sacrifice compatibility for a clearer picture on a system that's pins aren't going to bend.

  13. You can actually use Atari 9-pin sticks like those for the 2600/7800/8-bits, even Genesis pads. Some situations are flaky, & every configuration wont always work. Some games go into pause mode when certain directions are pressed.

I have a PointMaster joystick that works great for Time Pilot, but a Genesis controller activates the pause mode when pressed to the right.

Long story short, the Super Action controllers are great & recommended, certain games (Front Line & some sports titles) are designed for them.

How would I start a game without being able to press the numeric pad.

Added in edit: I should probably note that presently the only game I have is Donkey Kong which requires it. I'm guessing not all games require you to press a number when you start?

  14. Congratulations on the working CV.

The picture my current CV produces is crystal clear. My last cv had garbled graphics.

My problem isn't garble it's just like it has more static interference than say my 7800. Maybe it has weaker RF shielding?

I assume you wiggled all the cables around?

That's the best I can do....I'll now defer this to more technological astute board members.

Yep, it's not bad. It's just noticably more staticy than the 7800 (I haven't pulled out my VCS to compare with though).

Anyway, what controller options are there. I know there's the "Super Action Controller" or something. How is it?

  15. It really is ugly. The packaging is hideous as well; it really looks like these things were released in the 90s.

This thing totally screams Atari Jaguar to me. Even the box art is similar with the same Black/Red style. The HyperScan is a total 1990s throwback. Is retro cool right now? I dunno.

Jaguar had way better packaging. Thing thing is a cube box with marvel characters all over it.

  16. Well, I finally received my colecovision. It works!

A few notes, even I was surprised by how big it was. I do now realize I have in fact played a Colecovision years ago when I was a wee lad but it's been so many years that my recollection is quite hazy.

First off, the controllers are worse than I expected, I thought they were intellivision like. This is much, much worse.

Next off, despite a scratch over the front part my Colecovision is in shockingly good aesthetic shape. I'm really surprised for what I paid. Which also brings to the point that the seller definitely lost out just in shipping it, he definitely underestimated the shipping cost.

Anyway, I noticed the picture is definitely clearer on my 7800 (I even tried using the same cord and tv switch box) is this typical?

  17. NEC (originators of the tg16/PCEngine) never officially manufactured/sold PAL versions of the said consoles as they never saw the UK/Europe as being a viable market

If memory serves me right they (NEC) sold the PAL manufacturing rights to a British company (can't remember the name, but it had 'media' somewhere in the name), I can't remember if they managed to sell or manufacture any PAL units

I only remember the PC engine/tg16 from the modded Japanese versions that SHEKANA used to import and sell in the UK (They were based in Tottenham court road, London)

There does exist PAL, European TurboGrafx (no 16 in the title) units from my understanding they were sold only on a test market basis in Southern England and Spain. Some time ago there was a seller who would consistently list them on ebay.co.uk however at the present time there does not appear to be any listed.
