Most expensvie/hardest to get N64 games?
DragonmasterDan replied to shadow460's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've seen it for sale used a few times myself over the years, but the reason I've seen it sitting in stock places it that for an N64 game it's also fairly high priced meaning people are less likely to buy it, I think in terms of number of carts in circulation it's on the low low end. Added in edit: This is especially relevant considering the prices of say "A Wonderful Life" for GameCube are lower than a used copy of 64. -

Ehh, I think it's quite the opposite. I think Harvest Moon is rarer than the demand. I actually had to special order it at release from a rather busy EB that received only ONE copy at release and waited three months for Natsume to print more. I think the stream of Harvest Moon games since has lowered the demand for it allowing more copies to trickle into the market place since there are better versions of the game. -
I cant believe it...The Hyperscan lives on!

I got my hyperscan today, it came in a giant box with lots of air bubble protectors around it. I'm undecided as to whether I have any intention of actually opening it. -

Harvest Moon and Ogre Battle are definitely two of the rarest carts. Also because they were niche games on a system aimed at a different audience most of the people who bought it were collectors so the chances of locating a copy loose are a lot lower than with other games since many of the buyers were hardcore gamers who are more likely to have retained the box and manual. Also Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine was sold online through LucasArts website or something in addition to being a rental cart. -

LOL, hired by Mattel. I wish. If I did work for them, the console would have had better games at launch -- that's for sure. I'm just a fan of the underdog orphaned systems -- Atari Jaguar, TurboGrafx16, HyperScan, Atari 5200.... I own them all -- and I just like the rarity of the "flop" systems more. Everyone owned a Genesis or SNES back in the day -- but my TG16 was just something special for me. I'm just another one excited by the fact that I bought a complete game system for seven bucks... The potential for hacking it is even more exciting. I love free software. Run Ubuntu on my computer. The fact that some of the more talented people might be able to bring more games to my 7 dollar console -- excites me even more. I haven't been this excited since my Dreamcast purchase. Being able to download new games on a CD-R is an awesome thing. TG16 wasn't really a flop. It did fairly well for its first two years in the market. In Winter 1991 the Genesis packed in with Sonic smashed it and the platform was catering to a niche audence in the US after that. For the first two years in the US at least it was neck to neck with the Genny due in no small part to the fact that NEC had bonk, a platform game/ mascot to promote the platform. I don't realy consider it to be orphaned in the sense that the Jaguar, Hyperscan or 5200 was. -
classic console buying other than ebay?
DragonmasterDan replied to 311fan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
If you're looking for import stuff as vintage as a famicom you're not going to find it much cheaper than ebay. I mean there is Yahoo auctions as well but it's the same deal. I can't imagine you're going to find many stores in the US that have famicoms in stock at a reasonable price. -

The CPU is not unspecified, it is very specified and the specs are available. I think the company was giving developer samples out at one time: http://www.sunplus.com/products/S+core.asp As for an OS, after a ram upgrade it can surely run a Linux. I know an older version of slackware (tweaked for such a system) will run and with say, 32mb of ram it can run something like FluxBox. But the point is to not have yet another desktop kind of computer but a game machine. So I tend to agree, you can have a GP2X-ish thing as long as you are willing to mod a good amount. And the USB feature of the HS lets it be either a host or device, so there is a memory boost there (if the OS supported it) by using a memory stick or something like that. out of thebox it is not an impressive machine, but it is so hackable it seems done by intention and not money constraints. Whatever reason, it is what it is. It's hackable. The CPU manufacturer has the specs available for download and they actually want people to develop on it. The cd's it uses are not locked, so you can make games for it. So, how is this not a steal? Nathan A few years ago I had Linux running on a P75 with 16 megs of RAM (we're talking 2.2 kernel series here) it CAN be done. But to do so while having OpenGL seems highly unlikely which means the system is not running Linux out of the box. Sure it's hackable. But for example with the Dreamcast you have far greater hacking possibilities. -
Who owns what copyrights?
DragonmasterDan replied to Student Driver's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It varies, a lot of times the IPs are auctioned off by creditors if the company is in debt. Sometimes the copyrights don't clearly go anywhere and will eventually be left to the public domain after they aren't renewed. It all depends. -
I don't know if Wireless keyboards work very well. The reason being they require a specialized driver in a lot of operating systems and also draw more power from the USB port. So my guess is that's why, it's getting power but because it's proprietary it isn't supported.

I'd think with 16 megs of RAM the BSDs would be just as unlikely. Who knows what it's actually running. -

Yeah, it's hard to say. I'm guessing you have the model 1 Genesis that does load the Sega screen at every game? -
What Game Do You Miss The Most?
DragonmasterDan replied to A Sprite's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I basically never sell or trade games unless it's something I happen to own doubles of. So nothing immediately springs to mind. In my time working in the industry I've seen a lot of demos of products never released, but very few of them were actually sent for preview or review purposes since they weren't far enough along for such a thing to occur in most cases. -

DragonmasterDan replied to sys_anomaly's topic in Classic Console Discussion
There's two different model 1 Genesis systems, if when your system starts when any cartridge is inserted and you get a Sega copyright screen then your Genesis has the chip lockout (this is present with all systems that came packaged with Sonic the Hedgehog originally) if it does not then it doesn't and the cartridge should load (the Altered Beast systems from what I recall mostly do not have the chip lockout). Added in edit: I don't know whether or not the Mega Drive backup RAM cart has a problem with US Genesis's due to a lockout chip or not. But I am aware that some Cartridges do. So check your Genesis. -

Good hardware? So far you still haven't shown me any specs... There's a reason Mattel doesn't want you to know what's under the hood. My Genesis can do better than the Hyperscan. Dude, there is a thing called google. Do I have to spoonfeed everything. The specs are well publicized on multiple sources on the internet. But, the most comprehensive source I found is: http://www.geocities.com/hyperscansoftware/developer.html ...and personally I could care less what you think. The fact that a PS1 fanboy can't handle that his ancient system is obsolete compared to a 1 year old game console is sad. Mattel is lame -- its a shame this hardware was crippled by bad games. The PSone is 13 years old, obviously it costs next to nothing to manufacture something more powerful. With that said the Hyperscan is apparently just a bit better than an N64 and signficantly weaker than a Dreamcast. -

Hooking up your old systems?
DragonmasterDan replied to cimerians's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The oldest hardware I have continously hooked up is Neo-Geo. Most everything older is boxed up and has to be set up to be played. -

I'd get one if it were WAY cheaper. At 35.00 with no games I'm better off investing in collecting Wonderswan stuff. -

What if the Crash of 84 didn't happen?
DragonmasterDan replied to 7800Lover's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Exactly, there have been slowdowns but no crashes. Most notably there was a big slowdown in 94-95 (it turned around in 96 or so). This usually happens between generations as the newer systems don't yet have thriving installed bases and the older systems software sales start to taper off. -
What if the Crash of 84 didn't happen?
DragonmasterDan replied to 7800Lover's topic in Classic Console Discussion
You have to take into consideration the reason it didn't happen. For the crash not to happen one of several factors would have had to occur. Reason #1 people continue to buy the crap that pours out from Atari and other publishers of the era. The market becomes even further saturated than it was with terrible games, ET 2: The Extra Extra Terrestrial for the 5200 becomes a best seller. My guess is as time would go on Nintendo would see a big open market in the US and either license or release the Famicom/NES themselves ( Added in edit: remember, by 1983 it was out in Japan meaning it's already an existing product by the time of the big bang in the US). With the market not having had crashed there's a strong possibility the NES is a big success as it was and it competes with the Colecovision and 5200 or 7800. The next question is what happens to the NES? It either succeeds due to the high quality of the games being brought over from Japan or fails due to the competition in the US. If it fails in the US then it also begs the question of "Will the video game market crash a few years later when the Colecovision and 5200 or 7800 becomes obsolete, does another Japanese manufacturer (Sega or NEC) take advantage of that? There's way too many variables and possibilities. We need a reason the industry doesn't crash to start speculating. -
Who Bought Neo Geo Games 'Back in the Day'?
DragonmasterDan replied to Tempest's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yep, even the system was small. When brought to the US and Europe as the TurboGrafx 16 (and in Europe just the TurboGrafx) they intentionally made the system physically larger in order to give the appearance of getting more for your money. -
Who Bought Neo Geo Games 'Back in the Day'?
DragonmasterDan replied to Tempest's topic in Classic Console Discussion
The reason it's so cheap in Japan is multifold. First off in Japan the cost of games was usually a lot higher to begin with. Popular games like Dragon Quest V for SFC for example cost around the equivalent (after exchange rates at the time) of 130.00 US. So paying twice as much for an arcade perfect copy of a game like Samurai Shodown didn't seem as bad. Additionally, Per capita in Japan they were far bigger into games there, so the hardcore gaming culture there combined with higher income levels definitely helped the systems popularity quite a bit in the land of the rising sun. The final reason Neo Geo AES's are so cheap in Japan is this, there's a handful of Neo-Geo collectors there (collecting games as a hobby is bigger there in general but not so much with the Neo). Why aren't there nearly as many as here. This is in no small way due to the fairly large size of the system and astronomical size of the cartridge. Considering the cost of rent and lack of space in much of Japan, it's a far less popular item to collect than is say Famicom carts which are much smaller and easier to store.
