There's two different colors of the PDS slipcases depending on which print run of the game you have. The original May 1998 shipment was black, I think the later shipments (making up about 80% of the copies in circulation) were white. Also these versions of Virtual On and Daytona are different than the normal retail box copies as far as I can tell. I have both and I can take a picture if you like. Also there's TWO different versions of the web browser. Virtual On and Daytona came with the second variation of the web browser which had to be purchased directly from Sega. Added in edit: Correction, I was thinking of Sega Rally Netlink Edition when I said Daytona, my mistake. Anyway, here's pics and also pics of PDS with the original black sleeves.

Those were the pack-in games right? The only one I have that isn't (besides the above) is Nights, it's in a standard CD jewelcase. I'm assuming that is because it was packed with the 3D controller. Yeah, Nights is another one. There may have been a few others that were pack-ins or promotionals that we're missing. I know the Virtual On: Netlink Edition and Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Netlink Edition also have regular jewel cases.

Ehh, it had a decent library of great first party titles. Super Mario 64, StarFox, Zelda, etc. There's a lot of great games on it, but it's not a system with as deep of a library as the NES or SNES. I wouldn't vote for it, but I can see why others would. -
I'm sure the moderators will be quick to point out that copying games is generally not really a topic for this board and it's nothing I have much experience with since I'm against bootlegging in general but I'm pretty sure if you google around you can find some answers.

Yeah in re-reading it, I should probably have better written my last post. I meant to say I try to avoid doubles of the same models. Like I have four US Model 2 Saturns, 3 NGPCs (in different colors), 2 standard NES's, 2 original Genesis's (this is in addition to other models of those systems I might have, like NES top loader, the original model Saturn, the slim NGPC, the Genesis 2 and 3).
-
I try to avoid it, but I do have multiple models of stuff. I have multiple NES's, Genesis's, Saturns, Dreamcasts, Neo Geo Pocket Colors.

Nothing recently, I don't go thrifting too often. the other problem is I have a lot of stuff. The chances of my finding say for example hardware I don't own in the wild is pretty low.

Favorite Nintendo System!
DragonmasterDan replied to fdurso224's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I'm leaning towards it but still haven't voted, for me it's a toss up between the GBA and the NES. The fact that I have a GameBoy Player for my GameCube kind of factors into its value as well (it's why the GameCube isn't put away despite my also having a backwards compatible with software Wii). -
The Saturn is obviously the best deal. Good finds overall.

This is a hard one, I think NES was the best for its time. I think the best available library of games is on GBA. -
Playstation 2 - the game to get?
DragonmasterDan replied to Paul Humbug's topic in Classic Console Discussion
My favorite game on PS2 is Dragon Quest VIII -
Exactly, the reason is flash is a seperate application and it's not part of firefox, it only happens to run in firefox. I think the other problem is that if you're using windows tracking down where that information is stored is a mess it's typically only accessible when view hidden files is available as C:/Documents and Settings/User/ApplicationData/ in there somewhere, in other OS's every application that creates data per user has its own directory in the home of the user, for example with flash it's ./flashplayer it makes it a lot easier to clean it out since you can just delete the applications saved data for the user directory and it starts over.

Wait until after Christmas, people can get a lot for stuff this time of year just due to demand. It gets kind of crazy.

29/40 from Famitsu that's... okay... I have my doubts. It's being made by the team that did Shadow the Hedgehog. I liked the original Nights, it's a fun game. But if it weren't for the fact that Nights was used as the primary Mascot for the Saturn I don't think the game would be held in such high esteem today.

I paid 33.00 for mine with 70ish games (some were doubles of 2600 games I already had) plus shipping in the Summer.

Broadcast television RF spectrum auction
DragonmasterDan replied to as_the_gavel_falls's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Not likely unless you're right near a place of broadcast. Most cable service connects through RF for example, I don't see it affecting things directly plugged in except in special circumstances where you're really near whatever is using RF. -
What's the most you've ever paid for one game?
DragonmasterDan replied to AtariMan1976's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Was that with shipping or something, I think it was 199.99 when it came out. I found it used in 2006 complete (though the box is kinda beat up) for 75.00. It's amazing how much it goes for despite being relatively common for a US Saturn game. I remember seeing multiple copies for 24.99 back in the day but since I already owned it I passed. I kind of regret it. Anyway, to answer the main question of the topic I think I paid 99.99 for Akumajo Dracula X for PC Engine around Christmas time in 1993 having bought it from "Die Hard Game Club" who advertised in the back of EGMs and GameFan (which they owned). There's a lot of arcade stuff I've bought for more than that, but I think that's the most I've paid for a console game. -
I agree that it's the games that games are obviously what matter with a game system but I don't think third party support matters as much as long as there are great games. Look at the N64, terrible third party support but a lot of great first party games that made the system worth owning as an example. The same goes with the Sega Master System or even the Neo-Geo. I don't think third parties thriving on a platform is necessary to have a be great for gamers. Obviously a complete lack of support is problematic, but the platform clearly has enough third party support to where it isn't a problem. In the eyes of publishers where there is a large enough audience (especially with lower development costs) they will continue to try to release new product to appeal to that market. I'm not saying the Wii is going to be a better bang for the buck than the 360 for most people down the line, but my guess is it's not going to struggle either. I look at this situation in a somewhat similar respect to how I looked at the Sega Saturn and Playstation. The Sega Saturn hit the market initially and quickly fell behind in terms of installed base to the Playstation. But the Saturn still sold a lot more software for a year or so after the Playstation passed it in sales. The Saturn was the hardcore gamer system, in Japan companies like ESP (which was a publishing agent for a bunch of smaller companies) intentionally focused their efforts on the Saturn at the time since they felt it would more directly target their primary audience. But as the Playstation user base continued to swell eventually the momentum overtook the Saturn (this also has to do with Sega bailing on the Saturn internally to start work on Katana but that's another story) and the Playstation market flooded with titles (both good and bad). The larger user base and ease of development compared to the Saturn was too enticing to publishers who eventually went the other way. In my opinion were there more top tier games for the Playstation then the Saturn, I'm sure I'm in the minority on this but I don't think so. But the Playstation had a lot more good games since it had so much more software and my feeling is with the larger Wii userbase and lower development costs a similar scenerio might occur.

Confessions of a "Gamer"
DragonmasterDan replied to jerseystyle's topic in Modern Console Discussion
My girlfriend isn't particularly interested in video games, when the Wii was first announced as the Wii in May 2006 (having previously been using the codename Revolution) there was a lot of bad press about the name with people all over the internet complaining. I told my girlfriend what Nintendo had decided to title their new system and I received a rather enthusiastic response. "Wii, that's like the best name ever, it just sounds fun. Wheee!" Even the systems name as intended to open it to as diverse of a group of people as possible, if (as many internet complainers) wanted at the time the name Wii was chosen it was given a different title like "The Nintendo Asskicker" or something that's "badass" and appeals to traditional gamers many of the people in the new audience for gaming would have been turned off by the name alone. -
Confessions of a "Gamer"
DragonmasterDan replied to jerseystyle's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I think the assumption that no one who qualifies as a "gamer" would say the Wii is the best of the three based on their experience is an incorrect one. It kind of goes back to stereotypes made in the thread about what constitues a hardcore gamer earlier. I think there's a lot of "gamers" who enjoy different types of genres. The Xbox 360 has a big lineup of quality games, but if you don't enjoy first (or third) person shooters it's appeal becomes limited mostly to Mass Effect and some multiplatform titles. The PS3 lineup is mostly multiplatform games and a handful of solid titles (Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted and Resistance) and it wouldn't be too hard to see why the Wii might be more appealing to a lot of people as well. Personally I think the Wii is a great platform with a lot of shovelware at the moment. But the strength of the Wii is that there are great games like Mario Galaxy, Metroid and such give the platform some quality top tier titles. I think the main reason people becoming condescending about the Wii is because its a departure in terms of marketing and in terms of appeal from any console in recent memory. With the Atari 2600 through the NES consoles were aimed mostly at kids with a few young adults buying them casually. When the 16-bit era approached Sega attempted to aim at a slightly older audience a little ways into the Genesis's lifespan (this was to better differentiate their product from Nintendo and for that matter from their master system) by having more mature themed games be a partial staple. The average age of the targeted gamer went up from about 10 to 14 at that point. When the Playstation hit Sony's big plan was to aim their system primarily at young adult males rather than kids. This proved to be a huge success as games aimed at earlier gen gamers who had grown up became hits while Sony expanded the marketplace substantially and added some general cultural credibility to adult gaming as a hobby which prior to that was seen as somewhat taboo. With the Dreamcast in North America, Sega tried to tap a similar market (using former SCEA big shot Bernie Stolar to help plan the launch of their console) and when the Xbox and Playstation 2 launched they once again competed primarily for the same market that the Playstation and Dreamcast did. The young adult male. With the Wii Nintendo has clearly had some success at marketing their product to gamers beyond the traditional scope of games (which has been kids and then males aged 16-35) and the mainstream acceptability of games has been growing especially lately with Nintendo (who has been greeted in recent generation which a bit of negativity since their product has been designed to generally cater to a younger and more diverse target audience than their competitors) gaining most of the press regarding their achivements. So a lot of gamers feel like their favorite products the Bioshock's and Call of Duty 4s are being ignored by non-gaming press in favor of more stories about old people playing Wii sports. This has lead to something of a backlash against Nintendo. Added in edit: I think that's the main reason you have people backlashing at Nintendo, they feel the community of gaming is being invaded. Perhaps the other reason is just simple fanboyism, a trend that has existed in technology going back to old computer platforms, to early consoles ( VC vs INTV, SNES vs Gen for example) and remains with us today with current consoles, current computer platforms and loads of other places where extreme brand loyalty or disdain can grow.
