Don't forget guys, I have not gone on air or on YouTube with any OFFICIAL announcement of a debut of either a 7800 or 8-Bit Edition of The Atari Report yet, at least I am holding off on that, smartly at that, although every post makes me giddy about its eventual release and also, it's only October 11th right now, we still have a good month and a half before the new year arrives, and I already acquired a 7800 for it (the 7800 will be here later this week), and can currently use it for the soon-to-be-reacquired Harmony Encore multicart for my 2600 lineup, and I currently own a 5200 and the VCS adapter for it (and have since getting my first 5200 for my 17th Birthday back in 1983) so I'm indeed eyeing up a Concerto and would never have gotten a 7800 if there were no plans for a multicart for it, only the Concerto made it happen for me.

Already made up my mind, a deadstock NIB 65XE and an a/v cord from Best Electronics and also The Brewing Academy Ultimate Atari SD Cartridge it will be!!! I don't have too much space in my apartment, so that will go next to my VCR and will be hooked up to the a/v inputs on her and run to my 40" Insignia monitor (and soon to a composite-to-HDMI interface instead later on!!!)!!!

65 XE it is, and cheap at that, the guy on eBay wanted almost $600.00 for one NOS and that includes just the unit, shipping and WA state sales tax, what bullshit!!!
Best Electronics here I come, and next, the Brewing Academy!!! I can now get a 65XE, a new 12-foot composite a/v cord and a Brewing Academy multicart by the end of this month now!!!

Thanks. That settles it. An XEGS it is, besides there are plenty of those readily available on eBay (about 10 of them from when I last counted) as opposed to the lack of North American (NTSC) 65/130 XE computers out there, plus I can use it with either RF or composite a/v with no special cords needed!!!

I noticed that going through almost all those files on my Homesoft Collection, Jesus Christ, there were about 250 titles under the letter "A" alone!!! It looks like I'm gonna have some fun go though all those files when i get either the XEGS or the 65XE computer, but, which one should I get??? I found out the XEGS is simply a repackaged 65XE with a separate keyboard and that the 65XE has it all in one self-contained unit, in which I can run my The Brewing Academy Ultimate Atari SD cart with it as I have to use the keyboard to navigate through all of them, and that alone would lead me to a 65XE as opposed to an XEGS. Which one???

I got mine already thanks to a small loan from @CPUWIZ so I can get one, I plan to get a Concerto multicart to go with it, I already have all the games ready on an SD card for her too!!!
Here is the unit I got, don't worry, I have plenty of CX24 controllers I bought deadstock some many years ago so I have parts for them so never mind the one missing the metal bezel on it. And, another good thing, the unit still has the protective plastic foil on the metal strip so it's unscratched!!!

I was watching the YouTube tutorial on how to use The Brewing Academy Ultimate Atari SD cartridge and noticed the guy on there using an Atari XE computer, and so i went on eBay to look at the possibility of instead of getting the XEGS to get a 65XE, finding out the XEGS is simply a repackaged 65XE with a detachable keyboard, and finding out on the clip that I would have to utilize the keyboard to go through the menu on the SD card on the multicart.
Which should I get, the XEGS or a 65XE??? They both have 64K of RAM in them, but the 65XE is all in one unit as opposed to the XEGS which has the detachable keyboard, I found one NOS US-spec 65XE on eBay but it seems like they're mostly in PAL in Europe except for about 3 of them which are USA/Canada NTSC in various conditions.

What about Yar's Strike? @playsoft did a fantastic job on converting @Thelen's original (I also have it) and also getting all of the bugs out of it, I think you guys would love it, if you want i can upload his new version he did for us 5200 owners (and after I lobbied for one for almost 4 years for someone to do so and especially after seeing Thelen's version just last year) right here on this thread:

The VCR acts as a (sort-of) RF demodulator as it takes the analog antenna (provided you set the VCR's built-in tuner up front to channel either 2 or 3 pending on the console's settings) and outputs it from the composite output of the VCR to your TV/monitor/home theater receiver's composite input jacks

My programs are also from The Homesoft Collection, will they work with The Brewing Academy Ultimate Atari Cartridge with an SD card I have ready for it??? And if so, is there any formatting I need to do to make my Dell/Kingston 1GB SD card work with it and my soon-to-be acquired near-mint XEGS system I will be getting soon???
-
I was just wondering if anyone thought about doing that, both the 5200 version of Tempest and also @playsoft's improved version of @Thelen's Yar's Strike that he did for us 5200 owners so you can enjoy it now that Paul took all the bugs out of @Thelen's original port of Yar's Strike. I intend to get both a near-mint XEGS and also The Brewing Academy Ultimate Atari Cartridge as I already have all of the nearly 1000 games available for it and ready to use on an SD card. I would love to add this great system to my 2600, 5200, and 7800 systems I already own and have been playing (in the case of my 5200) since 1983. I also have all of the ROMs of all 4 units on SD cards as well as multicarts for them all.
Tempest can utilize the same control scheme on the joystick as the 2600 version does, you already know about the left and right but in the 2600 version (and what would be the 8-bit version) you use the up/down to activate the Superzapper since it only has one fire button on the controller, a simple conversion from the 5200 to the 8-bit, since they both pretty much utilize the same hardware pretty much. I have the ROMs for both, perhaps it's YOUR turn to enjoy some of our games on YOUR system.
Thanks!

I was wondering, since I intend to acquire both an XEGS as well as this product, https://thebrewingacademy.com/collections/atari-800-xl-xe-xel-xld/products/atari-800-xl-xe-ultimate-sd-cart in which I found out about, in order to use all of the nearly-1000 ROMs I have for the Atari 8-bit computers, is how do I format the files onto an SD card??? I know how to load them up onto one, is there anything special I need to do or is there any firmware I need to download in order to use it or is it simply "drag-&-drop, plug-&-play"???
Thanks, and looking forward to adding this system to my 2600, 5200 and 7800 as well for debuting my 7800 and 8-Bit Editions of The Atari Report this coming January!!!

That's cool. I also have the XE/A8 version downloaded and will soon have both an XEGS and also The Brewing Academy XE/A8 multicart so I can enjoy the almost 1000 titles available for the 8-bit computers as I also intend to launch The 8-bit Edition of The Atari Report to go along with the 7800 edition in which will also debut in January.
Thanks Paul for all the great work for all of these years, and happy travels in whatever endeavor you go into next..... and since you're from the UK (I hope you're a football guy, mainly Arsenal), COYG!!!

I still have my dual controller holder as well, I look forward to playing the finished product and reviewing it on The Atari Report, it's gonna be right up there with Space Dungeon and Robotron as far as leading the way for R & D for more dual-stick games for Big Sexy!!!
In that case, maybe @edladdin should work on perhaps a Super Twin 52 as well to go along with the Super Twin 78 he already has.

6 hours ago, playsoft said:It was written specifically for ABBUC with the plan that it was made available to club members in issue 141, then made public on their website once issue 142 was published. I've just received issue 142, so when I find where it is on their website I will post a link. I think it would be nice if it was only downloadable from their website and not posted here or elsewhere, since they will get more footfall which might generate more interest in the club.
I see where you are coming from, but it wouldn't help bring much actual foot traffic there in order to generate either/both interest and/or promotional consideration for ABBUC as very few people actually know it even exists right now. As a matter of fact I only found out about it after you posted up this 5200 version and you mentioned it, and I myself checked out ABBUC and found it both interesting and a source for a great lineup of new games for the 8-bit lineup in which I will soon be able to check out once I acquire both an XEGS and also The Brewing Academy XE/A8 multicart for my massive amount of XE/A8 ROMs I already downloaded earlier this week (and also 7800 ROMS as well on an SD card for both the Concerto multicart that @batari is finishing up and my newly-acquired 7800 unit) and have on an SD card I have ready for it. In my 25 years in the entertainment business I believe that if you promote the link to it elsewhere, like right here on AtariAge, then maybe most of us here will then be turned on to perhaps checking it out and/or becoming members of ABBUC ourselves.

On 7/12/2020 at 5:02 PM, Greg2600 said:The answer is no SD cart is available, you're stuck buying carts on 7800, though most of them are not expensive. Hopefully one comes out in the near future but current efforts seem well off.
Oh yeah??? No SD cart??? HA!!! Oh contare, contrare!!! Concerto will be making its debut very soon and I already picked up a 7800 to go with my 5200 so I can use it, I even have all the games on ROM files already too!!! Also, Dragonfly is being worked on too for that matter, and I would not have picked up a 7800 if there was no SD multicart coming out for it, as I already own a 5200 and have since 1983 when I got my first one for my 17th Birthday back then and also own an Atarimax Ultimate SD 5200 multicart.
As for the controller issues. yes the stock CX52 does have them but they are very solvable by, 1) getting in touch with Best Electronics for a gold-plated modded 5200 (CX52) controller, and, 2) picking either a Masterplay clone or even an old AtariAge/Pixels Past Redemption 5200 unit in which allows you to (pending on the model you pick) use either 2600/Sega, 7800, or PC-compatible controllers on it while still maintaining the full keypad and start/pause/reset features of the CX52 itself.

When can I PM my address and e-mail, as well as.... do/will you take PayPal???
I am running out of options as far as picking up a near-mint (but still pre-owned) 7800 ProSystem I was eyeing up on eBay got sold before I had the $$$.
I am eyeing up one more right now but I have no way to get 40 miles to Silverdale, WA to get a payday loan so I can beat the crowd to it, as my 2002 New Beetle isn't running and I hope I can get a grant through UFCW 21 as I work at Safeway here in Port Townsend, to get it fixed so I would probably have to wait again until after my Hulu bill gets debited and then just eat an overdraft fee just to "beat the crowd" so I can have it for the 7800 Edition (and the 8-bit Edition too) of The Atari Report I will be launching in January after Concerto gets released.
-
Any chance of having the original A8 8-bit version as well, as I will be announcing in a few weeks I will be launching both the 7800 and 8-bit Editions of The Atari Report in January as well as a new way of presenting actual gameplay as well as my famous during-in-game commentary in order to jack up the subscription ratings and also so I'll have more games for more systems to review for all of you loyal fans!!!
I already downloaded both the entire 7800 (.a78 files) and 8-bit (.xex files) library of titles and will also be getting both a 7800 in an XEGS as well to joing both my 5200 and the 2600 adapter as I will soon be ditching the FB9 and use a Harmony Encore for the 2600 adapter instead staring in January to go with my Atarimax 5200 multicart I currently own and also pick up the XE multicart from The Brewing Academy (https://thebrewingacademy.com/collections/atari-800-xl-xe-xel-xld/products/atari-800-xl-xe-ultimate-sd-cart) and also the all-new Concerto multicart for the 7800 (read about the latest right here!!!
once it's finished!!!) I will also be buying SD cards for both of those multicarts as well and will hopefully be ready for my all-new format by the new year!!!
-
@playsoft since you did a great job on converting Biscuits In Hell are you up for converting Food Fight for us 5200 owners???
-
I took a look at the clip and found it impressive and since I am a @playsoft fan and supporter I downloaded it (Cindy Margolis taught us all how to download back in the 90s!!!
) and I look forward to playing it and reviewing it on The Atari Report!!! Watch for it soon!!!

Atari XEGS or Atari 65XE computer???
in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Posted · Edited by BIGHMW
I know there are a few XEGS fanboys on here, but my choice of getting a 65XE is simply because I have to use the keyboard to go through the menu on the Ultimate Cart, as opposed to simply a joystick like on the 2600, 5200 and the pending 7800 multicarts. And, you also, in the case of the XEGS, have to have the console there too along with it, just to start and reset when you reboot the main menu or start gameplay, along with the controller of choice, and that is too much I would have to drag out of my a/v rack just to be able to play a game on it. It's all in one unit with the 65XE as opposed to the separate console and keyboard to contend with on the XEGS. I don't have a lot of room in my small apartment I make home to BIGHMW.com World Headquarters at Bishop Park here in Port Townsend, WA, so compactness is the key.
I haven't made any commitments, so I'm still up for suggestions.
