I also remember Starmaster used it too for certain functions

No SD card slot, no dice. I'll just stick to my Flashback 9, thanks.
That is what turned me on to the FB9 (I use the AR-3050 with HDMI after finding out the Canadian-market AR-3230 with RCA composite out did not work with some homebrews I enjoy including Chaotic Grill!, Space Rocks, Donkey Kong Arcade and Scramble among others, all 32K homebrew ports) after finding out about its SD card slot as I have over 650 titles on that SD card that I USED TO USE on both my old Flashback Portable and also on my old Harmony Encore, although the FB9 kinda disappointed me not working with my CX80 trak-ball and God knows when they'll put out those special FB9-compatible paddles for it. C'mon AtGames!!!

....and Scramble too, I was going to add this onto my last post but the edit button has been removed from the options list so I can't.

I heard from AtGames and they sent me a couple of files and a video tutorial on how to get rid of the test screen, my system is running absolutely perfect right now but it sucks that the display of the games can only be in 4:3 format with black bars (or custom bars via the built-in options in the main menu, in which displays in 16:9 beautifully, but not the games themselves) as opposed to the AR3230 in which displayed in old-school SD but with my TV I was able to "stretch" the image (wide mode) so it would fit in the 16:9 ratio.
But, the AR3050 plays all the games and once again I can play Space Rocks, Donkey Kong Arcade, and Chaotic Grill! on it but because I am using an HDMI jack hooked up to my Insignia 39" TV I am unable to have the "full-effect" audio that playing it back on my home a/v receiver (a 1990s Sony a/v receiver) allowed me to do with the AR3230 hooked up to it. Is AtGames going to introduce a hack or can someone here offer one up to "stretch" the 4:3 aspect the AR3050 displays to fit the full screen (16:9) as opposed to having those black bars left and right?

I was wondering how many of you ran into this same problem as I have right now, I just got my new-in-open-box Atari Flashback 9 with HDMI on eBay, and hooked it up, and after the AtGames logo I get this bright red test screen (see pic for details), no matter if I have the SD card or want to access the built-in games, it won't get off the test screen, so what do I do???
-
I looked up the problem and it seems like this is a common issue with the AR3050 (HDMI, HD) unit, it is a red test screen and I am not the only one who has this issue, so I contacted AtGames by both Facebook messenger and Hotmail/Outlook, and I hope to get an answer soon.
Here is the exact letter I sent:
Atari Flashback 9 only shows test screen - what do I do to get it to read properly?
Dear Sirs,I just received my of the Flashback 9 from eBay (it was a new in open box purchase, $30 including shipping) , but when I boot her up after making all the connections I get a bright red (what appears to be a) test screen and no matter what I do none of the built-in games nor those on the SD card will display, what do I do?Thanks,Ray JacksonAtariAge user ID: BIGHMW -
Note that it's not how it displays that is the problem, it's that I can't get to any of the menus, let alone play any of my games, now you know why I bought the SD AR3230, because it was easy to understand, this unit, the AR3050, while looking great (especially when using the "wide" mode on my Insignia HDTV, in which I always use) I am unable to get it off of this (what appears to be a) somewhat test pattern as displayed in the last post, I just need help getting off of it so I can enjoy all of my games on it, I bought it so I can play all the games the AR3230 would not.
-
I am having problems right away with my new-in-open-box FB9 with HDMI, when I boot her up (both with SD card in place and without), all I get is this
and I don't know how to get it to read normal, let alone play any games what do I do??? it seems like this system is out of my technical realm, as I have pervasive developmental delay, even my late grandmother could not understand the VCR we gave her in Xmas in the 90s we had to send it back. I don't want to send this unit to Goodwill because I can't understand it, help me.

19 hours ago, KevinMos3 said:The Flashback HDs display with black bars on each side so that the game portion of the screen looks 4:3. With that hdmi-to-AV converter, the screen gets squished horizontally (the whole screen including black bars). Yes, I have that converter.
To view full screen on a CRT, you’d have to have the option to stretch the image horizontally, either on the Flashback, converter, or TV. Most CRTs don’t have that option, unless yours has a hidden service mode. Even then, the adjustment is probably not enough.
I use an Insignia HDTV that does have that "stretch" (wide) mode as an aspect option

3 hours ago, KevinMos3 said:Using this will squish the 16:9 aspect to 4:3, so it will be horizontally squished with black bars on the side. It would be ideal for AtGames to add an option for stretching the output to fullscreen. Then, using something like this would look good on a 4:3 display.
I always thought it made it 4:3 anyways even when using the HDMI cord (by design as to replicate old-school) Does the AR3050 display full screen or do I have to reset my TV for it tdisplay fullscreen ("stretched" 4:3 to 16:9)

My Atari FB9 with HDMI has shipped out (I picked one up on eBay, new in open box for under $30 including shipping), I already own an old-school SD (non-HD/HDMI-compatible) composite-based a/v receiver I have had since the late 90s and have found this HDMI-to-RCA converter to work with her, so for all those who want to get the AR3050 (HDMI version) of the FB9, and want to (or have to) use it on an old-school a/v receiver or non-HD (SD) TV, here is the solution:

Yes fellow 5200 owners I know I've been out of the loop for quite a while, but with my Atari Flashback 9 I am slowly working my way back to getting my game face back on track, now, I own a 5200 CX53 trak-ball but have issues with her not working, so I was wondering if guys like atari-dna (who repaired my 2-port 5200 last year) or anyone else might be able to help me get it repaired?
The issues involve non-responsive bubble contacts for the fire buttons on both sides, the optical reader on the ball not reading, and also those infamous keypads also not working, now, before go on eBay and get one for nearly twice the price for a used one, who can fix it for me so it works again? Or, does Best Electronics make a fix kit specifically for the trak-ball (like the fantastic gold-contact keypads like on the CX52 joysticks which work like a dream) or am I outta luck?
I do not want to get rid of Big Sexy, not with her better graphics and the fact that I also own the VCS adapter and plan to reacquire (once I get more money from my job over at Safeway here in Port Townsend, I still have the SD cards for both) both the Harmony Encore and Atarimax Ultimate SD multicarts.
With games like Tampest and Qix, both not available for any other systems (Tempest is available for the 2600 I can send a link for some mods done to the original "Blue Speedo" port done up last year that I picked up here on AA), and also the twin-stick games like Space Dungeon and Robotron, I am not giving up hope on her, she just needs a jumpstart and I need to get my game face back on that I USED TO HAVE in the 1980s where I could play every game great without turning it off after 5-10 minutes due to frustration like I do now.
Whom can repair my CX53 trak-ball???
-
Again, the FB9 w/ HDMI will play those DK games as well.
Convinced to get the HDMI AR3050 but I am skeptical about the where the audio signal is going to, as there are no separate L/R audio jacks just the HDMI output and while my Insignia 720p HDTV has 3 HDMI inputs I am also a bit skeptical as to the display of the games, I have read that it's only read at a 4:3 ratio (with black bars left and right) as opposed to 16:9, where as the composite AR3230 "stretches" the 4:3 to display to fully fit to the 16:9 (full screen), especially since all of my SDTV (480i) components read the full screen as opposed to having black bars left and right like any HDMI-capable unit (like my Windows 7 laptop with DVD drive) would when it comes to displaying an SDTV 480i file/program
Will the HDMI version read on the screen in 16:9 as it is 720p-capable or will it have those dreaded black bars to the left and right??? If it can do it then "game on"!!!

No Donkey Kong Arcade and probably no Donkey Kong VCS either.

How many of you own the (somewhat) Canadian-market Atari Flashback 9 model AR3230 with composite RCA a/v output so they can use it on their old-school (non-HD) setup??? I picked up one on eBay and am having compatibility issues with a few homebrews on my SD card, Space Rocks, the great Chaotic Grill!, and Scramble (all 32K files) will not work, however, Star Castle Arcade does work (also 32K), any advice or help???
Want to hear some input from fellow AR3230 owners like me.
-
AR3230 (Canadian-market FB9 with composite RCA output I picked up on eBay as I use an older setup) owner checking in,
No Space Rocks, Chaotic Grill! or Scramble.
All 3 are 32K ROMS I obtained that worked on my old Harmony Encore multicart with the 2600 adapter on my 5200.
Star Castle Arcade does work though
New thread I just put up for all of us AR3230 unit owners: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/292036-atari-fb9-ar3230-canadian-version-w-rca-av-composite-owners-thread/

Just tried the SD acard again, I found out I had the card loaded UPSIDE DOWN, so I tried the other way (contacts up, label down and NOW IT WORKS!!!
-
Tried yet another SD card (Kingston 1GB microSD card through an SD adapter), it would not read it either, this is bullshit! I am about ready to throw this thing and smash it through a wall!!!
NEED HELP!!!
-
I just got my pre-owned Flashback 9 from eBay and I am having issues with the SD card slot, I did change the file to "Game" and retitled some of the files and fired her up I went to the SD card browser and it said "loading" twice and returned me to the menu, this is bullshit!!!
I need to know what to do, this is the AR3230 (the one with the RCA jack instead of the HDMI as I use an older receiver) and I thought this unit would work fine with an SD card, like my old Harmony and also the Flashback portable did, I have almost 650 titles on her and I only modded the title names on a few because I did not want to spend 2 hours doing 650 of them, I NEED HELP!!!

We're still waiting for a 5200 port of this classic, make it happen!!!
Here is the 8-bit port we 5200 owners are waiting to have for our systems!!!
Even if you can't put it onto a physical cartridge a ROM or .bin port will do us just fine, as long as it will work on the 5200!!!
We're still waiting, somebody do a ROM for the 5200, simple physics, just simply convert the codes, it's already 8-bit-ready, my SD card on my Atarimax 5200 multicart awaits!!!
What a gamebreaker THIS would be if it came to choosing between only the 5200 or the 2600, considering the brilliant finished Keithen Hayenga-created masterpiece that Tempest became and also us having Qix also available, Qix is not available on the 2600 and having Yars' Strike on the 5200 on top of those would put this over the top!!!
I already still have the Redemption 5200 for the 7800 sticks (it also works with 2600 controllers as well), and also the CX80 and CX53 trak-balls and also Best Electronics-modded CX52 and CX24 controllers and will reacquire the Wico 5200 joystick and keypad combo as well (now that I'm FINALLY out of debt and currently working for Safeway here in Port Townsend since April), so Yars' Strike would be the icing on the cake!!! C'mon somebody put out a 5200 ROM of it!!!

-
Thanks! Then that's settled, I'll just reacquire the Harmony Encore multicart in which I know all of my controllers (including the CX80 Trak-Ball, in which is the ONLY WAY to REALLY play Centipede, Millipede and Missile Command, and a few others, as it produces higher scores and more accuracy) will work with it, and that will play almost all of my 650 games on the 2600-specific SD card will work.
-
Now, before I go on eBay and get the Canadian-market Flashback 9 (model no. AR3230, the one with composite RCA output and SD card slot), I need to find out which controllers she will not work with, after all I own a Wico redball stick, a few Atari CX24 (7800) sticks and also a couple of CX80 Trak-Ball controllers that I used to use with my Harmony Encore multicart through the 2600 adapter on my 5200, I need to know if these (or any others like the classic paddle or driving controllers or the video touchpad for Star Raiders) will or will not work with it. All I need is a list of compatible controllers as I already know almost all the games (650+ games on my SD card) will work on her, it's just that I am a purist who insists on using a trak-ball for Centipede, Millipede, and Missile Command among others, so am I good to go with the FB9 or should I re-acquire the Harmony Encore multicart, in which would require a ton of space for both the 5200 with the 2600 adapter and also the multicart?

Who would go for an Atari 5200 Flashback-style unit???
in Atari 5200

I am in a paradox, I own both an original 5200 and many accessories for her like several controllers and the VCS adapter but I also own an AtGames Flashback 9 with HDMI that plays those great (well, not really , when compared to the 5200 ports) 2600 games on my SD card slot I used with my old Harmony Encore multicart, but after looking at a different post (mainly of Parker Brothers' ads for their games on various different systems, including both the 2600 and 5200 versions among others) I now greatly miss playing the graphically-superior 5200 ports on my SD card I still have after I sold my Atarimax SD multicart.
That, leads to this, I have been enjoying my AtGames Flashback 9 but since I dearly miss my 5200 ports I am planning on getting back that Atarimax multicart, but, I don't have the space required for Big Sexy to fit in my a/v cabinet, which leads to why AtGames (or anybody else for that matter) has never put out a 5200 Flashback, in which would be almost the same size as the current Flashback 9 (or my Lonpoo LP-099 region-free worldwide DVD player) I own, all that is needed is the circuitry from both the 5200 and the multicart themselves, combined and put in a small, miniature 5200-like enclosure (Little Sexy) with just 2 5200 controller ports, an HDMI port for modern HDTVs (or composite RCA stereo a/v jacks or a 4-pole composite a/v minijack) an SD card slot, power switch, and a micro-USB power jack, plain and simple.
Who is willing to do it? I could two s***s and a f*** what the copyright police, or AtGames, think of it, but I would pay $$$ to obtain one, much like Edladdin came up with all of his great controllers, and all of you with your great homebrews both on ROM and on cartridge, somebody can step up and do this!!! How many of you are with me on this, and how much would YOU pay to get one???
