and the other vids on Ashens channel he cover these games very well.

Given the concept (which I think could be pretty neat) one thought I had was that, although the action takes place in various time periods, perhaps it could all take place in the same, well, "place" (as in the "Back to the Future" series.) As the players time travel, they can see how the various areas they explore change and evolve over time, so that there's always that element of familiarity balanced with something new. It could make for some interesting logic puzzles too, where certain actions you take in the past directly shape and effect the future time frames. You thwart a plot to assassinate the mayor in 1926, but when you jump forward to 1952 you find that he went on to become a ruthless dictator, with posters of him hung everywhere like Kim Jong Il. Or maybe you nuke a massive boulder in the Paleozoic era, allowing settlers in the 1600's to expand into an area they otherwise would have avoided. Or how about if you travel back to the middle ages and trade a modern 21st century device for something you need in the moment, like a bow and arrow, accidentally sparking the information age a few centuries too early. You return to the "present" and instead find a bizarre "future" that merges medieval culture with sci-fi technology.
I realize this sort of mechanic would get a little hectic if taken to its extremes, but it might be an interesting way to approach design, with the world dynamically changing according to the actions of both you and your enemy. It would also provide some opportunities for humor, I'd imagine, with recurring characters popping up as "ancestors" throughout every time period: "Bob Johnson" is a bastard in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution and the Space Age... Bob Johnson is, has been and always will be a bastard.
I like that! kinda like the Sliders TV series. I will be putting pen to paper tonight and jotting down more ideas.

Jaguar today? It would have to be no less than 10 different kinds of awesome to snag market from Microsoft,Sony,Nintendo.
First it would have to do something the other three don't.
It would come as a two piece unit a base unit with a docking station that hooks to the TV and a portable unit(that Lynx
to the docking station )the size of the DS Lite. The base unit is a multimedia powerhouse Blu Ray/DVD/and CD and Disc based games with plenty of built in storage for downloadable games and it would come pre loaded with the entire Atari library from Jag CD to 2600 to attract the original Atari fans. both units have Wi-Fi and the portable has enough storage to take a healthy selection of games with you on the go as well as browser capabilities and mp3/mp4 and such. -
This skips the crap and shows them sticking the Atari 2600 in:
I see the joystick is torn up. I guess that's what happens when you sit on it too often with your pants down.

*Raises hand excitedly!!* I know why it's wrong!
Because NES units and to an even greater extent Atari 2600's are a finitesupply item. They ain't making any new ones folks and those units could have either been repaired or used for parts for other working systems.
Of course I remember last time I stuck up for Atari related products getting destroyed needlessly more folks took the side of the guy destroying the Atari

It's really great that this is happening. It sounds like a very exciting project, and the action/RPG model seems appropriate. I wouldn't mind at all contributing some graphics and animation work.
Cheers,
Jarod.
Thats awesome! If you like maybe send a pm to groovybee and discuss graphics and animation with him.
The more help we get with this the cooler it will be. -
Is it started yet?
I have been contacted by both Groovybee and j.m.ratkos today and we are starting to gather the basic story line and elements so yes things are progressing. When we have a solid plot we will post it

-
I posted a comment correcting his info but I don't see it anywhere.

-
Thanks Chicky oh and btw......chat happening in about 20 min!!

-
Ok update time. I don't have the plot outline started because the winner of the scenario poll j.m.ratkos contacted me and we are currently getting things organized
So basically once we get things sorted out we will post up the plot and then hopefully get some great input from the community to roll this thing along!*Updates will be posted as needed*

Well with current gen systems and the ability for downloadable content and plug in's and such, TV Game show based games would be kept fresh and interesting!
You mentioned some good choices like:
Press Your Luck
Jeopardy
Tic Tac Dough
Wheel
But how about:
$25000 Pyramid
Hollywood Squares
Price is Right

Was it really worth the effort? Believe me, I understand this sort of obsessiveness, because I've been there.
I urge you all to step back and think for a moment:
How much of your time and gas money is this worth?
It's just a Famiclone, and far from the best one out there.
TwinChargers, that is a good point about finding stuff at Walgreens. My experience has been that when it comes to neat toys, they often have them hidden up near the ceiling, and you have to find an employee to get them down for you.
For me this was not much effort as I live in OH but work in PA and on my drive i pass no less than 5 Walgreens.
And this particular unit is actually pretty good in terms of game selection and quality construction and having the Tengen version of Tetris on it more than makes it worth the effort.

My scenario did not win the poll but I am still very interested in this project and in an effort to help move it along I will start a new thread this weekend with a basic plot outline in the spirit of the winning scenario it would be awesome to not only have the winner of the poll help but it would be great to have the rest of the community chime in and help this along.
More to come this weekend

Urban Champion and The Soccer game seem to be the only ones repeated, and I agree the D pad seems a little vague but all in all this thing is actually pretty interesting. The game selection is not bad (except for the weird Pyramid Tetris game) the controller itself feels solidly built and the buttons work well. The best part for me? The actual Tetris game used in this unit is not the so-so Nintendo version but the Tengen version!

Yes... my Vectrex! I own two and both don't work for **it. One the screen flips out of control, the other the screen is off center and flicker is bad. I'm just about to throw in the towel and destroy both with a sledge hammer to put them out of their misery. I wouldn't want to sell them and then have another poor gamer go through the agony I've been going through. *sigh*
I would love to have a Vectrex even with a flickery flippy screen but sadly my cash flow is but a trickle these days but if you ever grab that hammer in frustration let me know and maybe we could sort something out.
-
So what you're saying is that the 50 in One device doesn't even have anything as good as pirated NES games; it's just generic, no-name games that are highly derivative of known titles without actually violating their copyrights?
I kind of suspected that, based on the screen shots on the product's packaging.
Correct the games are blobby, and generic looking and not even derivative of any game I could recognize other than Battleship. Sadly none of them are interesting enough to want to play.

Chat happening in a few minutes be there or be square and not the cool kind like in Adventure either.
-
I loved it when it came out and I played it to death but I loathe my Playstation it is buried under a ton of dust and Vic 20 tapes in the back of my closet I think the biggest issue was and is the load times they are ungodly long. When I got my Dreamcast the Playstation was duly kicked to ye olde curb with the rest of the slow moving flotsam.
-
Ok I found the 101 in 1 for $10 and my friend got me the 50 in 1 so I have both now.
The 50 in 1 is complete rubbish I would put the graphics quality somewhere between Intellivision and Early NES efforts. The controls on the Shooter style games is adequate bit on the Platformers it is slow and collision detection is sketchy at best, the only game I recognized was a rip off of Battleship. All in all not worth the $12.99 he paid for it.
I'll finish checking out the 101 in 1 tonight.

I see Atari 2600 and games at least at two yard sales every Saturday morning and I live in a small town. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just saying the Atari 2600 seems to be a thrift, flea market and yard sale item.
-Disjaukifa
Oh I know they make a rare (no pun intended
) appearance at the odd flea market or thrift shop but for the most part they have dried up in the area I cover from Rogers, Ohio to Youngstown, Ohio and in PA from Erie County down to Allegheny/Washington counties and everywhere in between. I see some very overpriced commons occasionally and a good deal now and again on Craigslist but not ike the good old days.
Sounds like you have a bit more variety in your area.
-
Rare is in the eye of the beholder. If you live in saaaay Thighcheese,WV and your town is so small and remote that even internet access is sketchy and you just got into collecting Atari then pretty much any cart including Combat is rare. Or look at it this way it's been about 30 years since the 2600 happened pretty much everything is getting scarce as carts/systems have long since moved into the hands of either collectors, game shops, or the local landfill (Not just Alamagordo) so you have basically a certain amount now that moves around usually on ePay or other sites rather than the abundant amount seen at yard sales, thrift shops, etc... that we saw in the late 80's through the 90's.
Just another viewpoint.

Ok i stopped at Walgreens on the way home and all they had was Plug-n-Play 50 Games and it was $12.99 the companies name is dreamGear and the website is: http://www.dreamgear.net/ the address is simply a PO Box in Torrence,CA
From what I could tell by the minuscule pics on the back the "games" are mostly NES style games like Super Mario 2, Zelda, RC Pro Am? and such. And no i'm not wasting $12.99 on this thing....$4.99 maybe.
And I am not surprised at all to see these things at Walgreens/Wal-Mart etc... as much of the inventory they carry is made in China so why would they not carry what their biggest suppliers tell them to carry? Last year they had them Wii-mote games at Walgreens Dr. Ashens even reviewed them:
